- The first of seven children, Lee Kyung-mi was first “discovered” by an executive while she was on a walk near the Namsan Mountain. She started doing TV commercials, but soon pursued a singing career after yet another chance encounter-this time, with a famous composer.
But the entertainment industry had a dark side, one that Lee Kyung-mi-now Monk Bohyun-knows all too well. From performing pop songs in front of passionate fans to singing Buddhist prayer songs on UA-cam, Monk Bohyun’s life looks vastly different now than it did when she was in her 20s.

She didn’t leave behind a music career, she left behind a sex industry that she was pulled into, even forced, this so called private meetings with fans and parties are not innocent. Poor woman. The title is wrong. The title makes it sound like she left fame and glory but she didn’t, she left slavery and shame.
That what I thought. She was forced to give customers sexual services.
She didnt say anything about what happened at night club when she chatted with customers or what happened when she attended the VIP parties. 😥
However it’s so obvious because it is well known some idols & artists are forced to do that if they are tied with horrible companies.

No offense to her sister, I just didn’t understand why she was reminding her about her idol past and how good and beautiful she was. It was like she didn’t respect her choice to be a monk, especially when she tears up looking her. I felt like she didn’t truly understand her sister’s suffering in the industry and why she left to be one. No money is ever worth your wellbeing. I’m glad she’s at peace now.

I got a feeling she didn’t tell her family the full story why she decided to become a monk. If they knew I highly doubt her sister would just casually remind her about her past unless given permission by her as part of the documentary’s script.
She was told by the producers to remind her of the past and even brought a photo album because they were shooting a documentary. Everything was done for video purposes

It’s really not that surprising. A family member becoming a monk usually comes as a big shock and many people have a hard time accepting it.
She said she won't talk about her "uncomfortable experiences", but every single woman understood without her saying a word.The Kpop industry is bad enough now, i can only imagine how horrific it must have been in the 80s. This brave, strong woman is an inspiration for people to overcome abuse and exploitation. But sadly, some people are too materialistic to ever be able to escape the clutches of money and fame.
She was groomed from a very young girl. You can follow the tragic path of her early life through what was not said.
I am glad she found safety, peace and a sense of purpose through her spirituality.

Even though her sister weeps for her, the monk actually looks more peaceful and radiates a different kind of joy than her sister
She had to give up a lot for her new life. While she may find it enough, her sister might be upset that she gave up them as well. And some other things. I imagine it’s complicated.
Her sister’s point was also valid. If her family was economically stronger, would she have had to endure the darkness that she did in the industry? Perhaps she would have not become a monk and given up everything, including her family.
At first I was like "Wow she's so lucky they just wanted to shoot a commercial in that basement!" and then she started talking about the private parties with fans and government officials and I realized there was a lot more that happened that she doesn't want to say. I hope one day she is comfortable speaking about her experience in more details, maybe then her sister would understand a little more why she gave up that "glamorous" life. I'm glad she escaped that life and is safe and happy now.

The Japanese used to have rumors about many male idols getting molested and not long ago we found out it's true. i wonder if Chinese stars are also the same or not. i mean i don't know anyone of them but i know they are pretty famous.

Watching this reminds me of some Kpop artists who committed suicide because of pressure and being unhappy with what they do. Glad this monk found her way to what makes her genuinely happy and calm.
Seeing someone reflect on so much abuse, trauma and pain when they've found their path to enlightenment is so powerful. Bless her ❤

I can understand when her sister said to her Monk Bohyun is still her sister.
I just dont understand why it took so many years, until 3 yrs ago, for her to accept her sister is really a monk now.
She also brought those pictures that were reminders of painful memories for Monk Bohyun.
It gave me the impression she idolised her singer sister a lot when she was still an artist, so she couldnt accept the fact that sister had gone & became a monk

its more like, accepting her sister is a monk = totally cutting ties off. Sometimes kinship is bigger than everything. Rmb she said, monk is eldest so took care of siblings. Meaning the sister views the monk as her mom, nobody can easily give up their mom.
The pictures are part of the docu, and not to remind her of her painful past, but for the sister to show her love for her big sis/mom (monk) that someones still remember her. And its her only thing left of her.
if she idolized her sister as a singer for money, she wouldn't have said: "if we were doing financially well, would you still become a monk?"
She clearly lived off her sister fame, concerts, gifts,meeting other celebrities and forth. When he sister left all that she couldn't get any of those. She's very disappointing bringing up heartbreaking memories and albums like that. She's selfish

I think it may be a combination of both. She loves her sister a lot, her sister is so kind and sweet. And she probably didn't want to trouble her younger siblings with her negative experiences, so they only saw the good stuff about her being a singer. For them, her becoming a monk seemed sudden and drastic and unwarranted. And they glamorized it, maybe. "My older sister is a famous idol," and such. But they know very little about her life as a monk, and not much really happens other than daily life. So if they have never really established an equal relationship what does the sister do when she misses her older sister and goes to visit? Talk about what if her sister's life she knows. Reminisce, because for her they are good memories. Perhaps they should play a game or her younger sister should ask for details about what she does as a monk, but as some point she runs out of conversation starters. She may have no idea that her idol years are such an unhappy memory.
The idol factory just won't ever stop. Being an idol is hugely glorified in S. Korea, and there's no shortage of teens who go into such industry barely knowing any of inner dealings, not to mention that their families aren't any wiser.
Her sister is still trying to lure her back into the old life that she has left behind. She has found her peace in Buddhism and the sister just need to leave her alone.
Her experience must be horrible for her to go from one extreme to the next. I'm just happy she found rest and purpose as a monk now. Also, it's good that her sister finally accepted her desire to completely hide in the wings of the secular world.
I remember her as a singing sensation in Korea...She was totally exploited and taken advantage of by the industry ...Even back then I noticed
This 15-minute video taught me more than any hour-long TV shows or movies I’ve watched so far. A very powerful message. Her existence lights up the world. I have depression and this made me feel so much better like I’ve been heard. She inspired me. I pray there are more people like her and though I may not be perfect I’m going to take the first step to seriously undertaking the wisdom she shared here

Her encounter with the dark side of stardom seems eerily similar to what happened to many 80s pop idol talents in neighbouring Japan. The sexual exploitations are hushed and swept under the carpet, and many of the artists are forced to accept sexual favours from perverted old men in order to secure their jobs as singers.

When the part with the camera and director started, I thought "Oh. I've seen this show!" How inspiring it is that she found her peace and happiness, and shares it with the world. I love what she said right before her song.
Very happy for her. The entertainment industry will always be based off sex, children ( teenagers) , in the guise of talent for fame and money. There is alot of things not being talked about behind the scenes in korean music industry. How they treat their staff. I can see people seeking this lifestyle to heal trauma. The peace of mind is beautiful.

I really admire her and especially appreciate the advice she gave to other k-pop artists. They suffer so much in the industry and training camps. She demonstrates that you can survive that trauma, heal, and find new purpose in life. 🙏🏻💗

This is one ☝🏽 of the reasons I’m disgusted by the Kpop Entertainment Companies when they debut 13 year olds or some being barely older. I’m also sad seeing others trying to make you feel guilty for leaving the trauma and abuse because they only see the financial gain. I can’t help but think of all the idols WHO ended their lives. 🤦🏻♀️💔

This reminds of the former Hong Kong actor Timmy Ho. He left the entertainment business to become a monk. Great that she has found her inner happiness. It is not easy to drop it all to lead a religious life. However, life in the entertainment industry is not easy so happy that she has found peace with herself. Best of luck to her.
Hope those celebrities that are facing the probs can watch this documentary. There are way too many suicide cases in the Korean entertainment industry. Sometimes death is not the solution.
Alot has changed in 30 years since this brave woman took a religious oath. Social media and transparency has helped keep alot of companies in check, save SME(but that is because they own alot of the media stations) And hopefully her words will remind people that Idols are people too.
When she was an idol, it was when the net and social media were not in existence yet. I grew up in the 80s as a child and miss that decade a lot. There were problems but life was much more peaceful away from social media and technology overall.
I'm so glad she found her own peace.

I don't quite understand why lot of families would feel such a big shock, sadness, or even resentment towards a family member who has decided to be a monk. Even most Asian TV dramas would depict it in such way. Personally, I've always seen being a Buddhist monk as a positive and peaceful life (or career) choice. Yeah being a monk meaning he/she won't get married or have child or become a CEO, but isn't it honorable to help promote peace and healthy life-style? I think as we approach the next century when drug addicts, homelessness, murders, divorces, cancers, suicides, wars, conflicts, and global-warming (I won't judge if u don't believe this one lol) are all on the rise, we need to rethink who we should really admire.
Asian, the group-oriented society. Teach us to holding a materialism philosophy. you're at the most respect when you are reaching the high reputation status.
Being monk in some eyes mean you are being selfish. The parent probably thinking something like "I feed you up and this is how you gonna pay me? I can't believe my own daughter would abandon the family to become a homeless peasant called monk, what a embarrasment".
Trust me, I am part of that culture. Some parent even force their children to eat meat so they won't converted into buddhism.
@@jimchad9900 Yeah true, certain aspect of being a monk is indeed viewed by some as being selfish because a monk would have to leave everything behind especially in the old days when roads and transportation weren't adequate. Those temples or monasteries might be far far away from society. Also in many Buddhist countries, only the poor families would send their kids to become monk, and that the monks would regularly go out to ask for food and monetary donations, which further associates them with begging, poverty homelessness, and low social status.
Perhaps monks should do more (public seminars and other services) to actively contribute more to the society so that people won't see them as an useless non-functioning group. After all, a healthy society must consist of both materialistic and non-materialistic members in order to keep things balanced and in-check. We will find ourselves living in a completely morally corrupted world if we disregard the importance of moral values such as kindness, respect, appreciation, etc...
@jimchad9900 and @ericsonyw Thank you for the explanations. It puzzled me too. In Western culture, if a family member became a monk/nun, it was seen as increasing the whole family's spiritual goodness and thus social standing.
It was common to give one of your kids (tween age) to a monestary to become a monk/nun of that reason.
And the person being a monk/nun was admired for giving up the world and focus on spirituality. People would be grateful for it.
It is really fascinating how it is the exact opposite there.
in asia, it is a dilemma. on one hand, monks and ascetics are respected. on the other hand, family life is very much valued. if one has 4 children, one wants all of them to be married and become good householders. so the dilemma. in buddha's life story, there is a lot of pathos about the fact that he left his household to become enlightened. his family is said to have endured the sorrow. later, in societies like tibet and sri lanka, where a good fraction of the population were in the monastic life, it was more easily accepted. it appears, the tibetans are very cool about their family members being monks... it is very common
Becoming a monk in Buddhism means you have to cut contact from your family. Maybe that’s why they resent her decision. Plus she probably didn’t tell her family the full story of what led her to abandon the entertainment industry (which is her ok as it’s her choice whether to share or not).
Her sister being upset that maybe that if their impoverished past was different that she wouldn't become a monk, it's not all bad becoming a monk. She isn't doing harm or anything illegal.

Actually as a Buddhist, I believe that being a monk not only not doing harm, she is doing a lot of good for the humanity, her family, and herself. Whether her family recognizes it, it’s a different story.
Maybe the sister sense that she becomes one due to trauma working in nightclub or as kpop idol which she had to do in order to help and feed her family, also she has to endure the harrasment from upper rank military general (due to the regime) that's why the sister said "if only our family is financially and environmentally stable"

@@judasromero Well, I also want to see her for everything she is, including all her names. The stage name has been a massive part of who she is and why she's here now in her journey. If I offended her, I'd personally apologise, but I don't understand the tone of "did you not learn anything". I'm sure she appreciates more compassion and understanding among us.
@@judasromero In Buddhism, a name is not something to be attached to as it is just a name to call a collection of things that make up "oneself". As a Buddhist myself, I know that Monk Bohyun would not be upset by someone referring to her by a previous name out of consideration for the young artist she once was. Please do not get too upset with them over it.
I can really understand the sister and how she even controlled her emotions is so beyond me. In my family, my grandmom had left for Sannyasa in 2015, she was 60 and i was like 12 at that time. Honestly, my brain still finds it so hard to process, always questions range in my mind like, what actually went wrong? Did we displease her? Didnt the face of grandpa or her children, even grandchildren pester her for once? Why she never looked back? She took nothing from us and went away.
Atleast, her sister knows her home, we dont even know whether our gran is alive or not, she just left for the Himalayas, as we last saw her. My heart really aches and yearns to see one glimpse of her, somehow in my lifetime. I keep fasts and almost religiously feed poor children and moms, animals everyday, so that my karma is good enough to let me see her. I know what is the outcome eventually, but this gives me a hope to keep my heart somewhat preoccupied.

I turn 60 in six months and would happily take sannyasa. If the family is grown and are providing for themselves, sannyasa is an honorable retirement. I have studied under many sannyasis. It is not an easy life, but fulfilling. But I have never been burdened by strong familial (or material) attachments.
In my humble opinion, women everywhere are forced and groomed since childhood to always put others needs and wants above theirs. I think it's understandable that, after decades of dutiful service, a human being would want to live their remaining days for themselves, leading a life fit for them, far away from social and familial pressure and guilt-tripping.
Personally I'm very lucky, the world is changing slowly and my family respect my personal life and choices. Something my aunts and mostly grandmothers never had the chance to experience.

There so many Buddhist nuns and monks around the globe, quietly working on inner solace. They don't enforce or endorse loudly about their religion on others. Hence you don't see them often. Buddhism is a inward practice, the fundamental nature of Buddhism is to Intune with relative and ultimate truth, thru the practice of No-self ( dependent arising ).

I honestly sometimes contemplate the idea of becoming a buddhist nun. I like small community living and spiritual practice. Being married and having a child, I feel like I am on a parallel world. I feel I am denying myself from my true existence path. But I had a child. Being married is easier to end but a child needs his parents to grow. I grew without my parents and it brought me so much behavioural and emotional problems and sadness. My child did not chose to be born and he is aspecial need child.. So the only way at the moment is to continue my practice, continue the pursuit of living simply until my child is able to thrive on his own.
Looks like you married the wrong guy and u regret it. Yes not everyone is for marriage and motherhood. But I think you were pressured to follow the expectations of society or you were just badly seduced by empty promises of a bad man

U dnt need to become a monk, U can try meditating while living ur normal life. Try searching Samatha Meditation or Calm Abiding Meditation and Metta (Loving-Kindness) Meditation
@@kushansumanaweera7086 it’s hard to practice that in this society especially when you are tied to a marriage and have a kid . I also contemplate what will I do if I have a child with special needs . I respect people who stick around and really be there to support their kid. I have seen a lot of people leaving their special needs child at a facility or adoption or group home because it’s so hard really, especially if u want to have healthy grand kids and a dream that they will be successful one day. Blessed really are those who care for their special needs child especially the bed ridden special needs

In fact I live like a monk already but the difference I guess is that I don t have as much time to dedicate myself to studies, meditation and community living. I also have to accept all the noise of the city. Unfortunately because of my child being in an early intervention I am a bit stuck in a big city right now. But fingers crossed in 1.5 years time, I ll be back to my hometown by the sea :) I think one of the positive aspect of not being a monk is that just like you suggested, I can mix different philosophies, lifestyle styles, meditations etc... I can create something made to measure for myself. I wish you all the very best 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

For me, what she did is less surprising than the people who enjoy and can handle fame, millions of people watching them etc. I'm sure even if they enjoy it, they still sometimes feel like they're toys, or feeling like they're outside their bodies, like she said. There are some people who can handle it but I'm sure there are cases that think they do, think they should enjoy it and he grateful, but in reality don't understand how it affects them.
I could go on and on about this issue but I'll stop. I just hope anyone in a similar position in the entertainment industry has the ability to reflect on themselves and the world, and live a life they want. It's only after we get what we thought we wanted that we realize what we really want. And I hope they can have her strength to walk away if they need to rather than exit life.
Last note, all kpop idols should have a therapist, like they have stylists, managers etc

I agree but sadly Korea is still slow on the psychological health issues. Hope they learn how to improve on that and take it more seriously. I heard some companies have therapists but not many do.
@@TrinhNguyen-sh4fj Yes that's true. I think it's still considered embarrassing/shameful to go to a mental health professional. And even some therapists still have this attitude, as in the tragic case of Shinee's Jonghyun 💔 Meanwhile the country has one of the highest rates of suicide in the world, with issues of bullying/cyber bullying as well as the massive rise of kpop and its effects on idols. I'm not even mentioning the massive competitiveness or the elderly etc. They really do need to shift their mentality 🙏🤞

The best you can hear/ see from artist / entertainer / singer or any from entertainment industry . Many of them lived a dysfunctional life from drug addiction , alcohol dependence , psychosis , fearsome family member , crimes , imprisonement ... and suicides.
This is purpose of life

After watching this I found the video of her old performance that was playing on the laptop at the beginning. I could see the pain her face when the music was starting up and we she starts to bop around to the music it’s obvious that she didn’t want to there, but she went on with the show. She is so different now when she sings.
wow....i feel such sadness listening to her and her sister talk with each other.....you can hear and feel the distance and sadness bc of everything she went through
Some families enable the abuse because of the close proximity to fame, prestige, and financial gain.
I am sorry that it started in hate, I do hope things have changed since then and she has found her grace.

After all the crazy allegations about the kpop industry...and all the su1c1des... I've stopped listening and supporting this exploitation of human life. I know this happens in other music and film industries... but it's shocking to me that even with all the evidence that has come out of the kpop industry, it's even more popular than ever. No matter how good or popular these kpop groups and singers are, I personally cannot listen to the music and not feel sadness or believe the facade of it all.
Music is magic. You can literally cast spells on people through music. That’s why these people are so hypnotized by it.
Same, i only listen to some bands now, because kpop idols feels like too fake and they endured too much pain.

As a fan of Korean music/Kpop, yes the fandom is weird as HELL. I just wish that folks just enjoy the music
The more you delve into K-pop and J-pop the more you realise that behind the fawning fandoms and gloss, it's basically a giant, lecherous cyclical machine that exploits every young person that goes near it. All the idols, even those who make it to the top, seem to end up on obsessive diets, are overanxious to please baying fans, and with faces altered by some form of cosmetic surgery.
I'm glad she found her peace in life.

Wow! That is very interesting story. I think many people don’t realize all the shady things in kpop industry and blindly feed it with their money. I hope no young boy or girl are being abused or even worse, in today’s new generation. More stans need to watch it to realize, not everything is so pink and innocent in this industry. That most singers are toys for money. And that you pay with your body to get to the high places.
@@_Q_T_ it is easy to ask than to answer…. I think that it is better to watch over the companies themselves, check their background, staffs background, or if there was any big scandal. The better is to be careful what groups you support, especially minors. Because in my opinion, it is both stressful for 13 y.o and not healthy at all. Plus, they can be sexualized which is disgusting. I think companies who do that and allow all the bad things and scandals happen to them is already a red flag. Maybe even to report them to authorities or organizations who take care of such treatment in the case something really bad is happening. As I said, I don’t know exact answer, just suggested what I think can be a way to stop it.

How much she had suffered to leave money, fame to renounce material things, it's happening to all actresses all over the world but the love for money and fame overshadows their real joy of life only when they grow old and when there's no true relationship they realise it.
So happy that she didn't give up in life like many do , but rather used her so pain and sufferings to grow spiritually and heal.
Can you still make/sing pop songs at the monastery? It would be peaceful and beautiful pop music, about existence, about nature, about life.
You definitely can but I don’t think she would want to be reminded of her past idol life.
