Its no joke. I see the little boys they used to be who are torn apart from their families for what? a stupid war. My heart breaks for them. How you can see my comment as a joke is beyond me.
The man who cried out that he finally got to see his nuna made my heart break.. Not even to mention the father who blames himself for "leaving his wife and two daughters behind".. Sir, you're the last person to blame in this tragedy. War is always horrible, but when it's with your own nation it's just a different level.
fighting north korea was going to be the same thing, you'd be fighting your own nation, people dont get that there isn't a legitimate korea, there are two of them, both north and south are not legitimate since they were both split, they're in the same boat
It only took 20 seconds for me to start crying when the younger brother screamed out for his big sister. This is so heartbreaking, I can’t even begin to imagine what they went through and is still going through.
The fact that North and South Korea even exist, was primarily because the US didn't want the USSR to get credit for liberating the Korean Peninsula. The US jumped into the war at the last moment and rushed to liberate southern Korea as USSR troops were fighting back the Japanese in the North.
@@xx133 FR Korea could've been united under a single country today even though it's Communism, it will still be better than it splitting in half with heavy sanctions from the west. The war was ALMOST over until the US jumped in and dragged it longer.
@@Jake-dh9qk you say “even though” like it was a bad thing. North Korea was very prosperous under communism, South Korea was run by brutal regime that impoverished the people despite their connections to the West. It was an embarrassment for the US. My grandmother lost her husband to the war ,when she was only 17 teen. She never remarried and waited to be reunited with her love. Unfortunately, it never happened as she passed away. Seeing this hits me right in the heart.
This is unrelated but you know these stories of people waiting for their husbands and wives for multiple decades is more sweet than bitter for me. Imagine being that committed to a person that their memories and longing for them is much stronger than the desire to feel loved. I'd imagine your grandma was also married for just a few months but till the end she was committed to her husband. It's kind of inspiring to commitment phobes out there (like me).
So very sorry for your loss, and that the futility and ridiculousness of war tears so many families and lives apart. I hope you can live your best life for them.❤
All due to Japan. It was Japan that created hostile environment, leading to building of different groups in North and South which eventually led to the partition. And saddest thing is Japan never admitted it's warcrimes
@@soheelee5255 clearly you haven't read about Japan's colonisation. Japan colonised unified Korea, then there were different groups, with different ideologies formed in the Northern and Southern part. These eventually led to the division.

the married couple who asked for each other, the woman who kept the shoes and the man who asked to reunite with her after 65 years being apart of each other 😿
My paternal grandparents were from North Korea. Especially my grandma was the only one in her family who came down to the South. When I was a kid, they told me they wouldn't apply for the reunion because they were scared to deal with it. I couldn't understand them back then, but now I get them. They still watched the TV whenever this reunion was on the air. Now I'm in my 30s and my grandparents both passed away. I don't believe in religion, but I do wish they could reunite with their family in the afterlife.
Separation from loved ones is very painful, and you feel the pain more as you get old. Reuniting in after life would be the very Happiest result for them.
I’m in my 30’s too and both of my paternal and maternal grandparents were from North Korea. Both of my paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather had family in the North but remarried in South-which is one of the reason I exist None of them got to see their family in the north during their lifetime. For people who don’t know, the families in this video who got to meet their family again through this program are extreme lucky ones as there were more separated families than the capacity that the two nations could handle. Only a small fraction of them could have such a brief reunion. So blatantly cruel. Last of my grandparents passed away in early 2010’s. It’s so utterly and undoubtedly unfair that they had to be the victims of Cold War, which was the war between the superpowers that are on the other sides of globe. I pray to every Gods of humanity that both Koreas realize ideologies don’t mean nor worth a shit when innocent people have to be sacrificed for political conflict. I get that time already had fled too much and now reunification of the two doesn’t seem realistic anymore, but I hope to see the two nations, and other involved parties(China, United States) at least agrees to sign the peace treaty during my life time. So the two nations open border to each other, trade and have cultural exchange, so that not only birds but also people can come and go freely, so that I can visit my grandparents’ hometown on behalf of them.
I sobbed through this entire thing. It's so unfair. So many families torn apart and they only get 12 hours a day for 3 days to see each other acter not being together for 65 years (now it has been 73 years as of 2023). Many of them dying before they get reunited. It's just simply unfair.
tears wont stop rolling I'm a bit annoyed at the camera's being shoved into their faces, especially at the moment "grandmother returns to being a shy 19-year-old bride" because I feel like with all the noise and flashing lights you can barely hear each other in such an important moment. I hope they got some quality time and space together even though it was limited
You can see how deep his heartbreak goes before seeing his daughters again. Especially when he learned that his first wife passed away soon after he had to stay in the South. Such a horrible thing the war created for so many people but also such a blessing he and many others are allowed to reunite with their loved ones after so many years.
war, war never changes, since the dawn of the universe, conflicts between people have always evolved from the petty squabbles of drama to the emotions of anger, to simple things like food and land. War.... war never changes
This is from 2015. Since 2018 there have been no reunions. According to the Korean Unification Ministry, about 133,650 people in South Korea have applied for reunions but nearly 70% of them have died (source NPR)
How cruel the US is to see this and not care. The US military has been the command at the border since they created it and requires documents from South and North Korea be cleared with them first. There are many reunification groups that have been trying to get the US to let the Korean governments handle this themselves.

@@jxy7096 North Korea has been on strict lockdowns sense 2020 due to Covid. So even if the US let the Korean governments handle it I don't think it would have made much of a difference. I wonder why the US is in charge of that though?
@@jxy7096This is completely and blatantly false propaganda. The U.S. does not “control” the border, the two Koreas do. Those reunion programs are strictly dictated by the North and South Korean governments. Even worse, the North uses these reunions as pawns for their own agenda to appeal for more aid. The last time these reunions happened was because the North was temporarily “acting friendly” to receive more aid and easing of sanctions (President Moon and President Trump). After they got what they wanted, the North Korean government immediately fired missiles into the seas and closed all diplomatic talks once more. It’ll happen again in a few years, when they need to beg for aid again. It’s like clockwork. 2002, 2008, 2012, 2018.
I feel selfish for even crying while watching this now. I can’t fathom the immense pain they have felt for 65 years of being separated from their loved ones. I hope that they will meet them some day. And to those that have passed I hope they will be reunited with them in the afterlife.
Your tears were REAL. Those tears could never be selfish. Those tears are a true sign of caring and sharing these peoples pain ain’t and horror. We all cried uncontrollably at some point while watching this reunion documentary..
I lived in S Korea- its very sad. A driver told me he was a little boy of 5 and his brother was 9 when they locked the gate. He and his parents were on the South side, his brother trapped on the North. In his 50s he still had no idea if his brother was alive. His parents agonized for decades
To watch this is heartbreaking enough. I can’t even imagine how just futile it feels for the survivors. It’s such a simple thing. Reunite them before it’s too late.

It's terrible what a war can do. My heart is just shattered. You hear their stories and learn they were teenagers when it happened. Now here they are, missing each other, thinking about the well-being of their relatives on the other side of the border. That shouldn't happen. I feel so much anger right now, and I'm not even one of the victims of the Korean War. I'm not even a Korean. It's just a real tragedy. I hope we can have a reunited Korea in the near future, and I hope that it would be a peaceful reunification. *sighs*
It's not the war's fault anymore, it's the governments of North Korea and South Korea, but mainly North Korea, who will snag any excuse to stop the reunions and disallow the families from communicating through mail after they learn each other's addresses.
It is terrible what Communism does. The Communists could have easily chosen to allow those who wanted to leave North Korea... to leave. The Communists chose to keep people prisoner instead.
A lot of people seem to be pointing out just how tragic and sad the situation is, which is understandable, but for once I’d like to focus on something a bit more happy. That one lady who joked about the husband having to pay a fine for being away for so long was just incredible because despite being away from each other for so long they act like a couple who’ve been together for a lifetime.
I am in tears right now. I cannot begin to imagine the pain, longing, and grief these families have endured for seven decades because of the war. And knowing so many more passed before ever having a reunion with their families like this, is so, so, so sad. Hoping to see reunification in my lifetime.
Oh my goodness, this has me bawling my eyes out. So heartbreaking. So close yet so far away, it's such a simple thing in this day and age. It shouldn't be complicated, it shouldn't be impossible. They'll never get closure, it's devastating.
@@jxy7096But given the economic situation in the north, is that easy ? How do you think reunification would look like if there was one? Who would be the winner politically speaking? I'm not sure which part is more sad... their actual reunions - or receiving the news of which family members are even still alive... My heart breaks for these people, and the very many who never have or never will be selected for reunion.
I think, knowing some alive or dead, is still a closure. The worst is that 1 grandpa who knows nothing going on. I cried so much as I watched him talking..😭😭😭
It feel absolutely terrible to know that there are thousands if families and people who havent heard from their loved ones for years. My mother was from Busan when she met my American father who was an army SFC. She loved America and never wanted to talk about Korea, especially during wartime. Her parents disowned her for marrying a foreigner. After 20+ years she was able to visit her hometown and make peace with her mother. She wanted to take me and my brother (we were the youngest of 4) but was too worried about the possibility of us being shunned. While seeing her mother again filled a void in her, her ultimate wish was to see the reunification of her homeland. Sadly, she passed away before that could happen. My grand father escaped NK in his 20's leaving behind his entire family, wife and kids. He got remarried to my grand mother who is from the same village as my grand father. My grand father sometimes looked towards the North and he would became silent and often became depressed. After a few decades when N and S Korea planned for reunification events he applied so that he can maybe see his family in North but never got selected to be in the event. He eventually gave up. He passed away in 2007. As an older me, I think about what my grand father went through. I can't imagine the hardships and sorrows he went through. I am grateful for everything I have, my family, friends and most importantly, the freedom. Thank you to generations that fought to give us the freedom that we do not deserve. I am forever thankful.
As a german living close to where the border to the GDR once was, this made me think a lot about history of my own country and Korea. Part of the border was going right trough a village, also separating families. I feel so sorry for all these families, it's so heartbreaking to be forced apart.

None of them got to see their family in the north during their lifetime.

Is it possible for them each to make a video and write a letter ...all to be held ( hopefully) by the Red Cross organisers in the hope that one day ... some family members may be able to at least see their respective relatives. God bless them all 🙏.
Thank you to the makers of this documentary, I'm from the UK and appreciate the opportunity to listen to these stories of lost lives.
There wouldn't need to be a need for the Red Cross if the US left the Korean border and let South Korea govern itself.
Oh my gosh, I cried through the whole video. What am I talking about…I’m still crying. This was absolutely gut-wrenching. I never thought about the separation of North and South Korea too much until I watched this. I feel sooooo sorry for all the families that were torn apart. I’m glad the 98 year old man had the opportunity to see his daughters but I wish everyone could see their families. I don’t think I’ll be sleeping much tonight…at least not without nightmares. God bless each and everyone of these families.
You can wish less by following God's example of righting wrongs on Earth and demand the US end this inhumane separation and no longer occupy South Korea!
i cannot stop crying, this is so sad. i hope that if not in this life that they reunite with their beloved, i hope in the afterlife they do. something needs to change, these poor people deserve to have their families in their lives.
this broke me so hard. Never experience war, the mostever happen is a nation wide riot and that already tears people apart. Can't imagine what the war victims have to go through. I hope and pray any war victim across the world that got separated with their family and loved ones can be reunited sooner.
We can hope and pray and demand the US end this monstrous division!
So much respect and loved for these precious souls !
I purposely watched this twice. The first time without close captions because I wanted to see if I could understand their emotions, and I did. From their anger, happiness, hurt, sadness, and frustration, I recognized them without even knowing that's what they were feeling. And when I watched with the sub-titles on, I was spot on for the most part. How could a whole country be so heartless & cruel??!!! And then to say shyt like they "QUALIFY" for a reunion! WTF you mean QUALIFY?? That's not even a word someone should be using when it involves reuniting family members. This is insane and one of the reasons I'm happy to live in America!
@sksmstlsdlek 🙋🏽♀️Hi. I'm glad you replied to my comment & also, I have no issue with the length of your comment 🤭. As a matter of fact, most of my comments are kinda lengthy as well because not all responses, opinions, and/or replies are gonna be short, sweet, and to the point🤷🏽♀️. But yeah, watching this video DID make me upset because when it comes to family, I will FOREVER AND ALWAYS have an issue with someone DICTATING my life & whether or not families "QUALIFY" to see their own family. Yet, I also understand your sentiments and me grouping the entire country as a whole wasn't the correct thing to say. I also DO wish your people nothing but the best and the strength to keep going.
Ironically the Americans are at fault for causing this situation in the first place.
the US caused this lol
This truly makes a great content... There's always profit to be made from a tragedy. What a beautiful message.
This was Korean content made for Koreans to educate other Koreans about Korean War, tragedy, etc, that happened to be uploaded later on in life to an American website, what are you talking about? This isn’t original content made by this account, these are all episodes from Korean shows.
And here I am crying like a baby for them. It’s so sad they had to miss so much of each other’s lives but so beautiful some of them were finally able to reunite
100 out of 100,000? That’s just disgusting. It should be at least 50,000.
I am inspired by their determination, love and patience . I wish that they will all have the chance to be reunited 🥹😭 and nothing like this will ever happen again
You can do more than wish by joining the call for US military to leave South Korea
As a Korean, I'm happy that this happens....not sure if it happens every year but, when the Korea unites, I hope I can find my lost family or other brothers or sisters back to full family in peace, force by peace....
The one in power would need to go away. I hope some day you see them, too. I feel so bad for everyone going through it all.
Absolutely! We'll never stop demanding the US end this inhumanity!
This is very heart touching.
I hope and pray.. someday all of them will meet
❤❤❤❤❤ my heart is so heavy for all these beautiful families. 70 years apart… I can’t even go a week without seeing my family. Soooooo very sorry everyone had to go through this heart breaking experience. Our family immigrated from south east Asia in the early 80’s. I’ll be taking my parents back to their country to see their families soon too. I can’t wait to see their reunion. ❤❤❤ wishing everyone a happy life, and many made years together in this lifetime. May you live your lives the way you’ve always dreamed of. Sorry it’s been so long to do such a simple thing…. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
This is so heartfelt you can’t help but cry just a wonderful feeling to see families reunited again.
0:16 the joy in this man😊
My heart goes out to these families. It must be so hard to deal with the stress and worry of not knowing where your family is or if they're even alive. May god bless these families, and I pray that they shall get to meet in the after life so they can be reunited forever.
Or follow God's teachings to right wrongs on Earth and call for the US military occupation to end in Korea!
I'm not even halfway through and I had to pause. I'm a puddle. I'm grappling for the right words to express the deep sadness and frustration with how we humans create these bizarre situations that separate families like this. So close, and yet so far. I've been separated from a loved one through death for nine years and I find it hard to bear. I think it is probably even harder not knowing if they are alive or dead. Wow, just overwhelmed.
We humans can also put pressure on the US military to end their occupation and control of South Korea to unite all!
This is so heartbreaking. Their longing for their loved ones is so palpable. I am sitting here with tears running down my face. To live with that kind of pain.
Coming from a country that was once divided too, I pray that Korea can be united in peace soon.
The US needs to end their control over South Korea for reunification.
@@jxy7096we Americans 🇺🇸 have no control over South Korea… South Korea is its own country the only people who control South Korea is the South Korean people themselves.
@@jxy7096we Americans 🇺🇸 will continue to keep the sanctions against North Korea 🇰🇵 until North Korea learns to behave themselves until then we Americans will not be removing those sanctions.
@@jxy7096the biggest threat to the safety and security of Asia is North Korea and China not us Americans or our Allie’s those sanctions are put against North Korea for a reason.
The North Koreans 🇰🇵 conduct nuclear weapons testing, North Korea threatens South Korea 🇰🇷 with military invasion, North Korea continues to violate human rights, North Korea threatens to nuke the United States on a daily basis, North Korea threatens to destabilize Asia, North Korea conducts cyber attacks, and North Korea keeps firing missiles over the sea of Japan 🇯🇵.
It's break my heart when every family give own thoughts, I really crying 😭
I think the least they can do is inform living relatives of which family members are still alive and when others passed away. At least give them the right to mourn and have answers so they can at least live knowing what happened.!
The pain that these beautiful people are facing makes my heart ache. God bless them all. ❤️😢😩
OMG ... I have no words. Only tears 😢
OMG. God bless these people forever. Such separation would be so hard. May it never happen again. God bless the love in these families.
OMG, I couldn't stop crying, 😢😢😢but I'm glad they met their family,
It has been stopped since 2018 because of deterioration of inter korean relations
