Three years later, my hope is that you attended the CWA and kept at it! You are far better than those "old" hams back in the 80s who used to bitch about how hard it was to learn the code. If they had spent 10% of the time practicing and using Mores code they'd be doing 20-25 WPM now. You are practicing an exciting and noble part of amateur radio history! 73 ES GL DE k6whp dit dit
Hey William, Thanks for your comment and reply! I did in fact attend the CWA and passed. I had Rob as my mentor, which was very cool! Thank you for your support, hopefully one day we can have a qso, I'm still slow, but thats ok right? 73' KE7FEI "dit dit"
I have the same key and bought it for the same reason. I just completed the CWA level one training. I don't remember having any issues, but now I want to check. I'll take a look at the paddle when I get home and leave a note as to if I had to solder as well.
Ron C its a great keyer! I’m excited to use it for the academy. Just sucks that the cables that I got from MJF the ends didn’t fit over the screws. Thanks for commenting Ron, have a great day 73’ KE7FEI
C7FEI?? No, I get it. KE7FEI. Plaudits for your zeal in pursuing CW and for enrolling in the CW Ops CW Academy. Your enthusiasm for this is palpable and infectious. I am a 20 WPM Extra whose code speed has atrophied to about 15 WPM and I am supposedly enrolled in the level 2 April 2018 class. So would love to have a QSO with you one day! By the way, not to nitpick, but it's a paddle NOT a keyer. The keyer is either in your rig or a separate electronic device. 71/72 de k6whp dit dit
Morning War Planner and thank you, I wish I could learn code quicker but I have a great teacher right now helping me and am soo ready for the academy in Jan! I have always wanted to learn code just never did it. My next step after learning code proficiently will be trying for my extra as well:) Oh and by all means please let me know / inform me about stuff like that. It’s not nitpicking at all, it’s helping me learn, so thank you for that. I would enjoy having s qso with you some day as well. Thanks for the information and comment! 73’ KE7FEI
BigCountry235, just a follow-up to let you know that I am pulling for you! You are taking the initiative to acquire a skill that goes right to the heart and history of ham radio! This skill was once required to get a ticket and was the source of more pissing and moaning by aspirants than any other aspect of getting licensed. If folks had only put a tenth of that bitching effort into learning (like you are doing), they'd all be 20 wpm extras! If you develop an interest in QRP or building, send me a PM (my call at arrl.net) and I would be happy to help out! de k6whp
Hey War, thanks for keeping updated on everything. I'm in the cw academy right now all the way till March 1st. Learning everything I can, I also have another ham KG5P he is in Texas and he helps me over Skype on Mon, We'd, and Fri with cw as well. I love cw and it's fun because it's like a secret language that most people don't know:) I'll look ya up and send ya an email, thanks again! 73' KE7FEI
Mr Big, you're doing great! Follow the adventures of W5CYF who basically started ftom scratch like you are and you will see how good you will be in about a year. Like John, you are the type of amateur we need more of. I may be repeating myself, but back when code was required, if most folks put as much energy into practicing as they did bitching, they'd end up as 20 wpm Extras! You've come far, pilgrim. Next, we'll get you over this aversion to soldering! In a few months, you will be working folks with CW on a radio THAT YOU BUILT YOURSELF!
Chuck Howard that’s a good idea! I may change it around and see if that works too. I’m enjoying the paddle for sure. Thanks for your comment! 73’ KE7FEI
Old timer suggested doing reverse so you could later go to left handed keying and taking notes with your right hand at the same time. I did it and it feels fine. :)
