A great review of a great little gizmo! I bought mine about 10 years ago, and my speed went from 5WPM to 20WPM in less than two months. I played with it every night trying to copy/translate off the air, and it's "touch and go" with that process... You really need a solid station to decode well enough. BUT (that's a big but) this also was part of my learning process! I set it 20WPM and left it there, only changing the SPACING. As I sent and copied, I learned the "SOUND" of each letter. As I improved over the course of that two months, I decreased the SPACING to 20WPM also! I could not have done this without this little gadget! It was indispensable. I don't use mine anymore because i don't need to, and haven't for years. But I still have it and will never sell it. I consider it a valued heirloom for what it has done for me!
Wow, this reminded me of a dream I had recently that I had forgotten where I was translating thoughts, not words, using Morse code, through a process of elimination like navigating a maze! I might need to seek medical help... 😅 Cheers, and 73.
I wish you had reviewed the unit's ability to RECEIVE Morse code. There are lots of gadgets and software to SEND code, but receiving is the real trick.
I love Morse code….. sending it and receiving it. If I didn’t like CW I’d simply go on SSB. I guess I cN see that device’s use if you’re a contester, which I’m not. Rag chewers have no need of it…. We have all the time in the world.
Hi,thanks for watching. For HF you need some sort of long wire antenna outside, the whip indoors mostly picks up electrical noise from your house and neighbours. The sane applies to VHF but you should at least be able to pick up some local FM (FM wide) radio stations around 80 - 100 MHZ. Fine receiver by the way!Good luck mate!
I have and use one of these devices, and found it very serviceable with memories to transmit. Good coppy depended somewhat on the adjustment of the front panel controls and on the sharpness of the filtered Morse code that was coming to it to decode. You must look reasonably continuously at the screen not to miss any letters that come through at high speed. This is another remarkable MSJ product that is very reasonably priced and does produce at least 90% of what it says it will do. For the time I used it I was very happy to have it and now I must look it up and try to sell it due my advancing age.

Thanks, 5 years later. I heard that the machines available were rather iffy because of human timing issues. So its good to know one exists that was well programmed. Being retired & 68 I'd like to give Morse a go & likely will pick up the machine.

You might be able to use magnified plastic sheets over the top of the display , they use them for when you are reading books or larger ones for reading a news paper, just place them over the screen held with some tape. Not sure why their seems to be an us and them attitude in some comments, I guess some just can't help them self in believing they better than others . it is a hobby, enjoy it! 73's.
I am pretty sure that the GNU/Linux program morse is what is generating the morse code on LCWO and I think using the morse program being a command line program has even more features than LCWO and is more flexible, here are some examples of how to use it and (man morse) has good instructions or just type morse without any flags for the instructions. This will tap out the alphabet in order A to Z and repeat 20 times, in groups of 5 at a character speed of 25 WPM & effective speed of 5 WPM whilst displaying each character in morse A.- B-... I certainly am working hard but I’m a week in and I am having issues with the speed of the first three letters. Slower and I’ve got it all day but I don’t want to slow it down. I’m at 20 effective but lowered to 10wpm. Hope I’m not dumb. I won’t quit however.

But the lady explains it so well. Also an annexe video on the connection as a reply she has given to a question. This process alone will make this device unpopular. Besides the price. Assembled decoder kits (new) are available for about eleven dollars on eBay. Good luck on your Morse journey. Long learning period to get proficient.
Machines are great at decoding machine generated code but not so great when decoding human generated code. Can anyone tell me if they have noticed any difference in accuracy between hardware decoders and software decoders like CW Get?

It took me a couple of years to learn code, to be able to reconise it instantly. But I stuck with it. I learnd three things 1. There is no short cuts, or tapes, Mnemonic or flash cards do not work, they will just slow you down 2. Learn by hearing not visual. 3. Learn the character's at 20 wpm 4. Is there no computer/mobile application that can read a keyboard to CW or read in CW to screen? Could say: Took me 300$ you could do it with 50$. Besides CW took me a year you should do it in weeks, no sweat
I'm really into morse. Also there's program for it if you want to just listen or if you don't have transmitter for morse. Search for FLdigi and there you have it. But i must say that you have a very good in depth video. Quality of content is amazing! ES5DOM, 73.
To the commenters who say "why not just do Morse" I respond that a lot of the contesting is done by folks who use readers/keyboards at 40 WPM or better. I prefer the K1EL K-42 as it is smaller and is a better reader...and the kit is cheaper; about US$100 or so. While my highly prejudiced opinion of MFJ is most of its stuff is shit, the MFJ-49X keyers were well built and the 464 is as well. It's just that the reader firmware is pretty ratty.

May I suggest you learn code before you jump in with a reader. They will not copy mechanical keys so your going to look pretty foolish once someone answers your CQ unless they are using a keyboard OR a paddle. 73 Rich, W9RAC
This is being a real ham...some people just do not have a musical ear and have a hard time with CW. Also, using gadgets is what HAM radio is all about. If it help learn...Why not use something? Just because you had to do it the old fashion way....doesn't mean everyone else has to. Do you use a standard transmission on your car? or do you use an Automatic? If your car is automatic...then that's not being a man...shifting gears is a man. Right?
The biggest mistake in Amateur Radio was removing the CW portion from testing for your licence. They might as well do away with any testing. Not much difference.
Learning morse code happens between your ears, not using some fancy gadget box. This is the downfall of the CW mode and a once great hobby. There's too much automation, which has erased the fun factor.
More proof that we're living in an instant gratifacation society. Wouldn't want to devote some time and energy to learning morse code the right way would you?

This is Great....But sending by hand is compromise as you feel the stroke. I learned sending morse code by the hard way(manual).

Even a year ago PS2 connector keyboards are well out of date.
These keyboards should be easy to find if people haven't thrown them all away!! :-) I have a couple around somewhere.

May I suggest you learn code before you jump in with a reader. They will not copy mechanical keys so your going to look pretty foolish once someone answers your CQ unless they are using a keyboard OR a paddle. 73 Rich, W9RAC

This is being a real ham...some people just do not have a musical ear and have a hard time with CW. Also, using gadgets is what HAM radio is all about. If it help learn...Why not use something? Just because you had to do it the old fashion way....doesn't mean everyone else has to. Do you use a standard transmission on your car? or do you use an Automatic? If your car is automatic...then that's not being a man...shifting gears is a man. Right?
The biggest mistake in Amateur Radio was removing the CW portion from testing for your licence. They might as well do away with any testing. Not much difference.
Learning morse code happens between your ears, not using some fancy gadget box. This is the downfall of the CW mode and a once great hobby. There's too much automation, which has erased the fun factor.
More proof that we're living in an instant gratifacation society. Wouldn't want to devote some time and energy to learning morse code the right way would you?
