I am pretty sure that, if can -- convincingly -- bring back Peter Cushing, they could do the same for Harold Ramis ... true, it won't be the same, just like it won't be after James Earl Jones, or Peter Cullen have gone, but still ...
There literally would be no purpose for a sane person to stack books like that in that location. So yeah, Peter's sarcasm really doesn't pay off here. Ray had a good point.
CGI ruined the creativity of film makers. You don't get the sensation of something actually being there anymore. Take the ending chase from Terminator 1 for example. Heart-pounding stuff. Trick shots like in this scene are much better. :)
I remember watching a short interview with Harold Ramis and for that specific scene, they had a heavy air blower and an electrician waving a paper plate to cue their reaction time... all I could think was “paper plate of DOOM!”
Really sad. The actress who played the library ghost died shortly after this film was made. Ruth Oliver was a famous astrologer. She was also a writer. You can see behind the scene pictures,of her having makeup put on while she is smiling and laughing. She seemed like a great lady.
This was one of the first VHS cassettes we had. My grandmother paused the film right as the ghost jumped out. I was about 7 and was terrified. (I latter did that to a friend a bit later on.)
If you haven't seen the original, you should watch it and then you'll see why people are so upset, the whole movie is classic! The lines are hilarious as well.

Pretty cool apparently @1:35 the book case wasn't supposed to fall, but these comic legends just rolled with it.. thats how ya know you've got real talent working on a film! :)
And this is why this version is superior to the remake. The original focused on ghosts, a horror element and added comedy to it. The remake is grounded in comedy and adds a ghost paint job, in fact from the trailers I don't any sense of suspense at all. Rematch the whole movie and it's shot like a horror film.
you are grossly incorrect. you just dont understand excellence, and the only reason you dont like the vastly improved ghostbusters is because you dont like strong female characters.
I have no idea! I guess maybe they think they could be better writers than Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, they are so wrong. Some of the lines in the remake are stupid funny like..."I don't know if it's a race thing, or a woman thing, but I'm mad as hell right now!" I didn't see that stupid thing though, just from the trailers.
I'm an 80's baby...and the part where the library ghost jumps at them was TERRIFYING to me! The anticipation used to have me peeking through my fingers lol :D
Fun Fact: The falling bookcase was unintentional. It's not know if it fell by itself or if it was caused by disturbance from the crew. The lines are ad-libbed and the scene was left in as an additional element of mystery for the ghost.
You can tell Bill was desperately trying to think of a decent line and looking for Dan Aykroyd to give him a prompt. In the end neither could think of something so Dan left it to Murray to ab-lib with what he had :P. It's great all three actors stayed in character and then tried together to tie the accident into the film.
From a Fun 'Fact' to a less fun truth... the falling bookshelf was in the script to begin with. But the symmetrically stacked tower of books was an idea that director Ivan Reitman had on the way to the set that morning (shot in the basement of a library in LA), and the scene where Venkman first encounters ectoplasm was also added to the scripted scenes as well. This is all detailed on page 28 of the 1985 book Making Ghostbusters by Don Shay, in the margin notes of the script page which details the crashing bookcase. A PDF version can be found at the website SpookCentral. www.theraffon.net/~spookcentral/gb1_book_makinggb.pdf

Yeah, I read that too. It does seem plausible, which only further shows their acting talents because it was so seamless and actually looked like it was planned for the movie.
+Tony Miller Lol no kidding! He would have gone on a 3 hour rant, swearing at everyone on the set from the director and DP to the delivery guy bringing sandwiches.
Shouldn't the books fall off the shelf as the shelf is falling? It looks as if they're glued in. Somebody call mythbusters. If it had been staged, surely the effect guys would've used real books that would fall off the shelf as the shelf is falling. Just my thought on why I believe it actually was a real accident.
This is why I hate this generation, you're all utter fucking morons. Those are real books and that is a real shelf. They are all glued in place because it's a film prop. It has to be easy to move and quick to set up.

OMG that ghost scared the living daylights outta me!
No reboot will ever compare to the original Ghostbusters. Bill Murray cracks me up in every scene.
One of our favorite ghostbusters scenes. Cant wait for the new movie and to see the connections it’s makes to the classic.
Did you enjoy it?
The really odd thing is a year before this Annie Potts was in an episode of Remington Steele, and in once scene she is in a basement library with a ghost.
I love the "Listen! You smell something?" Line. So good.
Ever happen to you before? Oh, first time?
