you need to learn how to anneal your gold. You hammer so far and stop before it cracks. then heat the gold with the torch and dip in water or let it cool slowly in ashes. one makes it hard and one makes it soft.. you dip cherry red steel in oil to make it hard. and cool the steel in still air and ashes makes steel soft.. but copper is opposite. you dip in water to make soft. but the more you mechanically work a metal, the more annealing you need to do. a little heads up to a brother. love your shows. thank you. Just try letting the gold cool down slowly. No Quench. See if that helps soften the gold.
My 16 yo son and I melted down some scrap gold he’s collected. He purchased a rolling milling machine. We turned his 10g gold into a fat gold ring. It was amazingly simple. We also did the same with some silver. I don’t take you for the jewelry type of guy but i bet Mrs. Wizard would love some new bling! Happy new year buddy!

Gold, fire acid, hammering and beer.... Now that is my kind of day! Can't wait until the 6 inch heads make production, I have a dream mat sluice just begging for one
Great vid Jason , very entertaining my friend , hope you got one of those white silicate melt dishes coming , guaranteed will melt that gold in a few minutes with Map gas . Maybe could heat your coin to flatten it and before stamping it might help , wear welding gloves though , don't wanna get burned . Happy New Year for 2024 Bro , and to all the FGW Team . Keep up the great work . 👍👍✔✔Cheers Nev ✌
The cracking will tend to be from heat treatment or work hardening. Heating it up to below red heat will make the pounding flat part easier. Also WH-40 on molds and tools will work as a mold release. When hot, it decomposes to a carbon film.
Hey Jason, this is a lot better than the last time I saw you smelting. The improvement is impressive. I'm happy you are going the acid refining route as well. I watch a lot of sreetips refining and he has made every mistake for you over the last 12 years. I can't wait to see your setup and your first aqua regia refining.
Happy New Year! I don't know anything about melting gold but when you quench metal in cold water it hardens it and makes it brittle. You might want to try letting it cool down slowly or putting it an oven for awhile then let it cool down slow.
I think graphite steals a lot of heat from the gold. We weren’t able to get our gold to melt at all using a mapp gas torch and graphite. We switched to a ceramic crucible and it melts like butter. Im talking 10 grams melting in about 15 seconds with 1 torch. The downfall is Pouring it into the graphite mold from the ceramic. Not easy

I think you should do a video using Coors extra gold beer for your water in your gold mining sluice boxes. Gold beer will attract more flower gold. It would make a good slap stick video for extra entertainment value.
If you anneal the "coin" after hammering flat by heating to red hot and quenching again it will soften the metal again to make stamping easier. Also if you anneal/quench the metal while hammering it flat it will help prevent the cracks. Hope that helps out. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Years
A Happy and a Prosperous New Year to you all! As transam301turbo peg it, Jason try annealing the button before stamping it will stop the cracking. Cheers.
The benefit of oxy/fuel setups is plenty of heat with no wind to blow fines away. You may have less to clean up if you use a clay melting dish instead of a graphite mold. Anyway, thanks again
Someone may have already mentioned, but if had the sluggo on a an immovable surface like the concrete floor the stamping would go much much better….great video thanks

pretty cool its tough to stamp coins of any sort. a little tip do it on floor less bouncing that takes away half your stamping power. That's as technical as i'm getting lol was fun to watch

I think you need to anneal your gold to shape it. Heat it to red hot and allow to cool naturally. It work hardens and that's probably why it's cracking. Cooling it by dunking it in water probably isn't helping this either. When people hand-draw gold wire, they'll re-anneal it several times before they get it pulled to the final size or the wire just snaps. You probably want to anneal it a couple of times as you're hammering it out, then once more just before you strike your stamp. I have a friend who is a goldsmith and he uses the work hardening effect to make his high carat rings more durable by hammer planishing them after he finishes shaping them.

Happy New Years Jason and Family! Man it's so great seeing that much gold. I think you need a furnace like Jason at Mount Baker Mining and Metals uses. As far as stamping I think I'd put the sledge on the concrete floor so it doesn't bounce quite so much? Not sure if that would help or not.
I think you’re exactly right about the bouncing… ive done it down there and it really does work better…. Im working on a furnace but need to save up a little, the kind i want has a nice big front door which will make things easier but its $700 😭

The crack isn't really from impurities so much as stress from moving the material around. If you heat it up it will relax and is less likely to crack.
