Dr. Klaper shares his thoughts on eating sea vegetables and the importance of iodine in the diet. For most vegans, seaweeds such as wakame, dulse, nori, and arame are the main sources of this essential nutrient. Seaweeds coming from the Atlantic Ocean reduce the concerns of any form of radioactive contaminants.
Question: Are dried sea veggies like dulse a reliable source of iodine, or does it evaporate as the dulse is dried?

I hope Dr. Klaper recording of his speech can be clearer. It's not that easy to listen to the low quality of the audio recording.

What about the Nori kind of seaweed, is that any good? That's readily available around here. Stinks but when a vegan sushi with rice, avocado and carrot is mixed in, it's lush 😊

The body needs iodine to make thyroid hormones. These hormones control the body's metabolism and many other important functions. The body also needs thyroid hormones for proper bone and brain development during pregnancy and infancy.👍

I just take an iodine supplement. Very controlled, no contaminants (presumably).

Hello, Doctor Klaper, thank you for all the valuable information you share. Your educational effort is very much appreciated! I remember watching a lecture of yours, where you pointed out that eating some types of seaweed is not beneficial at all and might even be harmful. I can not find this lecture anymore and do not remember the plants you mentioned. Could you, please, elaborate a bit on which types of seaweed are « goo d » and which are « not so much ».

You have to be careful as seaweed such as kelp has huge amounts of iodine and just a little bit will overdose you and cause problems. As he mentioned in the video, I suggest Maine Coast Sea Vegetables. I've been using their Sea Seasonings Triple Blend flakes for 8 years. They sell a 1 oz. shaker for $4 or you can buy a bulk 1 pound bag for $24. I buy the 1 pound bag. One teaspoon per day gives you exactly 100% of the RDA of Iodine, along with dozens of other vitamins and minerals. I highly recommend them. In regard to iodine...what are your thoughts on Brownstein's and Guy Abraham's work? Is there an "iodine crisis" caused by excess bromide in the environment (such as bromide fire retardants)? Can some or many people benefit from larger doses of iodine (like Lugol's or Iodoral), and is it possible to experience "bromide detox?" Sorry if the term is off; bromide, bromine, not sure how to accurately refer to it. I wonder about this because it seems like more and more people are having thyroid issues. But I'm skeptical of the larger doses since Brownstein and Abraham are controversial. Thanks for these videos by the way.

Also what are your thoughts on seaweed absorbing bromide as well, which can possibly act as an inhibitor (don't know about this since, like you said, iodine in seaweed is bound).

Would the B12 analogues in dulse interfere with the absorption of B12 in a B12 supplement enough to cause B12 deficiency?

Dr. Klaper, is it safe to eat dried dulse without rinising and reconstituting it in water?

I was under the illusion that when it is in it's dried form it is very high in iodine; you don't want to much iodine.

Rub a tiny bit of lemon juice on them at nite and leave it on there! But never go outside if you have it on your skin,! Also a tiny bit of ( oil of Oregano ) on your molds , apply again each nite until they disappear ! Will take a while , but keep apply every nite until they are gone! Reminder: WASH YOUR HANDS,,, AFTER YOU'VE APPLIED !
! Be very careful as not to get it to close to your eyes. Wash your hands also, don't want to rub this oil into your eyes.....Reminder apply a little bit! Don't waste it! Cost to much to waste! Merry Christmas!

Does cooking the dulse in a rolling boiling stew for ten minutes cause it to evaporate?

Cooking foods have been showed to remove at least 25% of iodine depending of the cooking method so it is also heat sensitive

Thank you. I've been using Irish sea moss and some sources say it's a great source of iodine and some say it doesn't have any -- is it like dulse as far as a couple times a week should be good? Is 3T - .5cup in a green smoothie every day too much?

    • @adamaj74

You have to be careful as some forms of seaweed have insane amounts of iodine, enough to easily overdose. The RDA is 150 mcg per day. The company he mentions, Maine Coast Sea Vegetables (which I have been using for 8 years) make a product called Triple Blend Flakes. You can buy them in one pound bulk bags that will last you two years and just one teaspoon gives you exactly 100% of the RDA of iodine, along with dozens of other vitamins and minerals. Easy peasy. Here is a link to the product: seaveg.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=18&products_id=100

In that case no amount of iodine will help for creating thyroid hormone. You will have to supplement for the rest of your life.
