It is official, THQ is the worst publisher for Nintendo consoles. THQ was a coward not adding 30 frames per second for the SNES release of Hard Drivin'. It would have been nice if Nintendo published this game, but I can understand they were scared and didn't publish games by Atari. It must have been because Atari Corporation almost ruined the video game industry, so I can see why Nintendo of America acted paranoid. Their crazy censorship happened from Nintendo of America only because of Atari's insufferable behavior with the video game industry during the early 80's which caused Nintendo of America's paranoia in the first place. I'm glad Nintendo won against Atari because you just can't name an American company after a Japanese word and expect it to do very well which is why Atari Corporation failed to begin with.
@@GardevoirBoy This version was going to be published by Atari Games, the game division that was co-owned by Warner and Namco, through it's subsidiary Tengen. Atari Corporation, which made consoles and computers, was sold to Jack Tramiel, was focused on it's struggling consoles.
For a console designed in 1985, this is damn impressive. Unlike the arcade and 16-bit ports, this game uses pre recorded sprites - and these sprites look way better than the Commondore version.
Hard to think the little NES could do something like that but the proofs in the pudding. Yeah it's heads and shoulders above it's more graphically advanced siblings.
The system would've most likely overheated over a long period would've been a resource hog on the nes looks like it was made with some sort of prototype superfx precursor
@@chrisbaughman9860 Probably. It's doing some real whiz bang things. Considering what they can do now with retro machines "like that SNES thing with pseudo 3-D that came out a while back" who knows what can be done with the hardware. That little NES is something impressive I tell you hwat. Much like it's even more surprising spiritual sucessusor in power, the GBC.
@@larrylaffer3246 yeah it is impressive for an 8 bit machine u can see certain 3d elements the frame rate frankly I'm surprised it wasn't far worse I mean for an 8 bit machine to draw a 3 demensional bridge u had to squeeze every resource out of that machine u could
Wow!!!! That was very impressive and the game had a solid draw distance. I would have kept this in my collection as one of the more playable versions! The NES kicked ass on this game. Only thing that baffled me is how you would be off road yet be in the middle of the road or how you'd miss some cars and others! The bridge jump and loop looked impressive as hell! Thanks for sharing!
Np! Right? It's amazing. The game was canceled before it was finished, so I'm sure those things would've been fixed. It's too bad. I was really into Rad Racer, and I would've loved to have had this one too.
Many people question tengens quality, but some of their ports are actually very good on the NES. Unlike TH*Q abomination sequel on the super NES "Oh lets port a arcade game that has a slide show worth of frames that is an unplayable mess" you know... I rented race drivin' as a kid and liked it because of the crash cams and cool stunts. however it's one of those games that you play again in later years and that fondess goes straight out the window. Shame this was never released. As a fan of the orginal,I would have bought it on the NES.
I have this for the Sega Genesis, funny thing is on Christmas of 1992 this was my second game I got for my other gift The Sega Genesis with Sonic 2. Got the Genesis from my Gramma Jennie and the Hard Drivin from My Uncle Jim and Aunt Sue. That was a great Christmas that year. Plus TMNT action figures from my parents total Awesomeness!!!!
I hope someone applied this technique and took it further, you could do full 3d this way. Just basically drawing 2d images to look like the perspective.
I'm guessing the reason that Race Drivin' and Road Riot 4WD got the green light was because that decision was made by THQ, the publisher who licensed those properties for the SNES, and not Tengen or Atari. Plus, I doubt the decision by Tengen to scrap this NES game was not so much about protecting the brand, but moreso about the risk of being stuck with expensive unsold cartridges of a less than stellar game, when it was already tough for them as an unlicensed publisher.
But NES is absolutely NOT capable of any type of 3D graphics at all without a really powerful enhancement chip much like the Genesis and sometimes the far greater SNES. This must be 100% power for the 1983 hardware.
This both impresses me and hurts my brain at the same time. It's like if I could go back and time and buy the programmer a cake for their hard work but then just smash their face into it.
That’s probably the most optimistic appraisal I’ve ever seen fit the SNES version. I mean the Genesis version had at least double the framerate, and even this NES version is shockingly smooth.
I love how this runs better than the SNES version
What a marvel for the NES hardware this is, and it does a hilarious job of completely upstaging the awful SNES conversion of the sequel!

This prototype is the equivalent of playing *_"Gran Turismo"_* on a C64. Probably the most impressive NES proto I've ever seen.

Someone did a SA-1 hack with the SNES version, bumps it up to 30fps.
@@locobandito7389 Really? Well then that easily makes playing the original game without the SA-1 rather pointless.
They actually used sprites for most of the graphics like the C64 port.
Unlike the C64 port though, this is fairly nice for the hardware!
zero sprites in the c64 port

When you think about the fact that the NES launched in 1983 in Japan and was likely designed in 1982, it becomes even crazier to comprehend.
Omg, you just brought up my childhood into my memory again!!
Same, I'm only 24 but i feel old when i watch these kinda videos

The description for this video is excellent as well

Bruh, the graphics playing that game back then is like playing Grand Turismo for the PS5 using the PSVR2
Woah, this runs MUCH better than the god awful SNES Version

Well this is embarrassing for the SNES version. Maybe they should have put these guys on that port.
this is nuts, you can't find this anywhere
Three guesses as to why this was cancelled!
Seriously though, this is better than I would have expected from the NES. For whatever that's worth.
Reminds me of night driver for atari
with such success in the 3D graphics of the NES, it would be possible to port Test Drive 3 The Passion

They do some kind of programming voodoo with sprites to create the effect.
