- Welcome to the Filmmaker Reel Contest 2020! Reels are the most efficient and cost-effective way to secure paying work as a filmmaker. Most producers, agencies, and clients don't care about where you went to film school. They care about whether you can produce the work they want to be created. A reel is a fast (60-90 second) compilation of your best work. It shows potential employers and clients the quality you as a filmmaker brings to projects.

2) Total running time must be under 2 minutes long. Reels over 2 minutes will be disqualified.
3) You must own all the rights to the work you put in your reel. Stock footage, copy-written work, and projects you were not directly involved in CANNOT be used in your reel. This is also just good life advice.
4) Entries must be submitted by December 31, 2020, no later than 11:59 PM EST via this link: garrettsammons.com/reel-contes...
5) @garrettsammons, @joshuamartinstudios, and @chrisvanderschaaf are the judges for this contest and all decisions are final.
6) Winners will be announced on January 15, 2021, on this UA-cam Channel.

I've never made a reel before so I am excited to give it a go. I have a question about which shots I should actually include. In a lot of my projects I have taken on more of the role of directing and editing. Should I only include the shots that I personally was operating the camera or can I also include shots that someone else was operating the camera and I was directing and producing?
It really depends on the type of reel you’re trying to make. If you’re putting together a reel for a production company, you can use anything the studio had a hand in. If you are putting together a reel as a DP, you should only use shots that you’ve captured. If you’re putting together a directors reel, only things you’ve actually directed, etc. etc.
Do sound fx also need to be 100% Epidemic? I love their sound library and I'll be sure to use some of it but I've also collected a ton of sounds over the years myself, bought sound packs etc. which I would like to utilise.
If you have already built a SFX library, I definitely won't stop you from using it. The music is the only thing that has to exclusively be Epidemic Sound.

It’s always worth entering, man. Having a reel is crucial for getting paying work, even outside the scope of this contest. Having the chance to get free music licensing for life is just is icing on the cake.
do spec projects count if i add them in ?
Spec projects are fantastic reel fodder! If you created it, you can use it.
