If you are looking to escape to the wilderness in luxury you need to see this listing on West Lake in the Unorganized Territories of Maine. Cheap taxes, few neighbors, and surrounded by more than 50,000 acres of conservation and public reserved lands.
Only occasionally does a lakefront property become available on West Lake in Hancock County. You owe it to yourself to check out this property in the unorganized territories of Maine.
First let's talk about location. Township 40 MD is an unorganized township. This means that property taxes are going to be the lowest you're likely to find in the state of Maine. Do the math on taxes when comparing properties and you will conclude the savings adds real value. T40 MD is nearly all in conservation easement. The adjacent Duck Lake Unit of the Public Reserved Lands and the Nicatous Islands and Conservation Easement combine to conserve from development over 50,000 acres of the forest surrounding West Lake and Nicatous Lake. This effectively will limit the available properties to what is now available.
The cabin on the property is a very well-appointed 3-bedroom 1-bath chalet style. An open floor plan allows for much of the home to have lake views. The pine walls and cathedral ceilings instill a feeling of “up to camp” treasured by residents and visitors to vacationland. The cabin has a wrap-around deck with a railing featuring stainless steel cable spacers to meet safety requirements without spoiling the spectacular view of West Lake.
This cabin sits on a full concrete foundation. Heating is done by an attractive LP gas stove and wall heater. An on-demand water heater conserves power at this off grid location. West Lake is a 1,344 acres cold water lake. Depths of 70 +/- feet with water quality rated as excellent by the fisheries department of Maine. In a state with water as clean as ours, this lake stands out as one of its best. The target game fish in the lake is the landlocked salmon and occasional trophy sized brook trout. The deep center of this lake is good for boating, sailing and waterskiing. The lake's improved state-maintained boat ramp will allow you to launch any reasonable sized boat.
T40 MD is located in northern Hancock County. If you do forget the milk the town of Burlington is about 16 miles from the cabin and has the bare necessities. If you need more services or goods, Lincoln is about 45-minute drive and Bangor 1 hour 15 minutes.

Beautiful place. I know a family that has about 3 to 4 times that amount of solar and they have 3 split heat and air units, full-size washer, dryer, and a large side x side refrigerator, and their solar runs it all with no problems. I'm not sure what type of batteries they have, but they were pretty costly, but after not paying an electric bill for a while they'll end up paying for themselves.

yes, reminds me of lake cabins my extended family has in the same lake country, central Maine... no where as grand, but still awesome... two+ cautions, you often have bitter cold from the end of September until sometime in May... beware of the lumber companies roads as they are only "safe" to use on Sundays!!! because the other 6 days a week overloaded logging trucks hog the road, very unsafe !!! You must paint your fly screens to keep out the biting black flies which are a constant problem,,, as well as skeeters whenever the wind stops...
if outside after dark, you must surround yourself with hurricane lanturns burning citronella oil to avoid being eaten alive.... otherwise, its a paradise !!!

Nearest big box is Lincoln 30 +/- miles and Bangor about 60. Lincoln has fuel for a float plane.

These are landlocked salmon, not the sea run version and are not endangered. They are very tasty and fun to catch.

Probably a central heating system in the basement and a little more solar and you would be good to go.
It's already a 4 season home if you don't mind paying to heat it. One big problem with year round use in areas like this is that a lot of places that start out as summer cottages are built with little or no thought to heat loss.

I owned 175 acres next to National Forest with the idea that the National Forest would be great for hiking and there'd be no building. An asset. What I hadn't realized was what I did get was an endless supply of people, giant loud 4x4, even louder motor bikes, snowmobiles and hikers. All of who considered my property as their own recreational area. So now I see public land as a negative now. There has been such a huge increase in people wanting to tear up the forest on motorized vehicles, shooting guns, flying drones. I'm better off trying to get closer to a city.
