4 years later, I still very much consider this a classic and probably the best mixtape so far this decade. His lyrics are off the fucking chain, you guys seemed to look over that. I love DEHH, but I don't like this review.
It just perfectly captures 90s hip hop, depends on joeys legacy when his career is done tho. If Joey falls off then it likely won’t hold up as a classic, but I see him growing in popularity
As a young dude i liked him alot because he brought me back to when i was younger and just hearing hip hop for the first time and for more younger ppl like me it gives us a chance to live what we couldnt fully understand when we were young not to mention he was spitting hard.
I heard the whole interview he basically said that b/c of his age and musical content this mixtape would never be considered a classic which is bs. Jay-Z rapped about bitches, mafioso rap and hustling and "Reasonable Doubt" was labeled a classic album.
There's no excuse. I'm 16. I was born in 1996. I own plenty of 90's music. It's not fucking hard to just go back and listen to what you missed. Everyone acts like if you didn't grow with it, you can't listen to it.
I don't understand when people say he's not talented and his lyrics are bad. Then they'll throw out Lil Durk and Lightshow and tell me that's talent. Smh
In the internet age, it's much easier than before for younger music fans to go back and listen to older stuff. I remember when I was 17 (early 00s) I was obsessed with Progressive Rock from the 60s and 70s and I would search the internet for bands like King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Rush and stuff like that.
I just wanted to say that this is the most consistently great channel on youtube. You dudes know your shit, and we need cats like you to be honest in your reviews.
"I know how to write these songs, I know how to light these bongs, I know hot to rip these thongs, and I'm pretty good at beer pong" LOL, when they are comparing Taco and Jasper to Chuck Strangers. So true. My favorite track is daily routine, and Suspect.
This is the Kind of Mixtape that gets me excited to see where an Artist is going, and I haven't been so keen to follow an Artist for a while, obviously its because of his Age (I'm 17 Years old, myself), but also because of Joey's Undeniably Raw Talent.
I agree with what y'all saying buy the only thing that kills me is how everyone says they want 90s hip hop back but when someone brings it back, it's a problem. You can't have it both ways.
Even if you haven't fully connected with the mixtape. He talking through his experiences and when it comes to lyrical content and metaphors. You have a lot of classic albums that had no direction but b/c of the lyrics and great production.
i dont think its a gimmick with joey badass hes dad propably raised him right on good hip hop i fully support this kid and think hip hop needs this right now
I think the reason people are considering it be a classic, or at least so good is an age thing. The great 90's sound (being 18) is something I go BACK and listen to. I've never been around when this type of thing had been NEW.
I found 1999 very similar to 1993 by Wiki, just because they both go back to this grittier dirtier time in hip hop. It also goes to show that no matter your age, generation, etc., you can easily make music similar to the old stuff.
I'm 15 and I'm influencing my upcoming mixtape "Methods of the Mad Doctor" on Joey Bada$$, among tons and tons of other underground rappers. I grew up with old-school hip-hop. I'm glad I did. I'm doing various styles of hip-hop on my mixtape from straight-up boom bap to abstract hip-hop.
Even Kendrick Lamar said himself " Dont call my album a classic, give it some time" to probably the most cinematic album of all time and possibly the best hip hop album of 2012, GOOD KID MAAD CITY, just give it a couple years, by couple I mean like 10 lol, but it's definitely a game changing type of album :)
When people say they want 90s they mean lyrics that have value and not just random simple content. And people say they don't want 90s they mean beat wise
People have suggested that before but it really takes away from the discussion aspect of the reviews. Music sometimes really comes down to where you like or dislike an album. Along with everything else in-between. A rating would be tough for us.
He can ryhme but since he super young he can't rap about anything but what knows. 17 but rapping about the music us 27 year olds grew up with is wierd but refreshing.
I guess but you didn't really grow up on it... You probably got into hip hop mid-late 90s. He got more of that early 90s, Tribe kind of feel mixed with that 93 Wu-Tang and Black Moon style beats.
From what I understand, he doesn't plan to keep this sound. I read somewhere that he had the 90s sound in mind only for this mixtape. I think he will probably move forward and he has a ton of potential.
So your telling me that 21 yrs old is not young? Actually Nas was 19 when he finished illmatic. It was slated to drop in 92' but b/c of label differences it dropped in 94'.
To everyone young guy pissed off at the generalizing statement about you not listening to 90's hip hop. Chill out! Yes you may listen to that but we encounter a lot of people that have not heard 90's hip hop BEYOND the popular 90's hip hop like Jay-Z, Nas, Biggie, etc. We don't need 50 million comments about how you listen to and own 90's hip hop. Or listen to it on Spotify. Signed - Management.
he did live at the bbq when he was 17, which got him known and was the intro TO illmatic, but the album wasn't done and released until 3 years later. But I get your points.
not because of his age, but since hes so young you can tell at certain parts and certain messages hes portraying, that he does need to grow. that's why the age is a factor.
If young people start bringing back the real hip hop vibe im all for it i havent heard the mixtape yet but it sounds like its much needed im going to check this out asap
11:00 Kinge, c'mon. We're all pretty familiar with the 90s. This whole channel is mostly attracting heads. Maybe a few casual fans, but mostly heads. This wasn't a classic. But it's incredibly refreshing to hear these lyrics and sound from a 17 year old who should be rapping about swag and cash. Just the whole context of the album is something amazing. It's a lovable album to say the least. Most of the cats watching DEHH probably didn't grow up in 90s, but we've heard albums from that era.
The dude with the dreds said he was more into Joeys flow more then anything else, and his flow outweighed his content. WHAT? If you didn't listen to what the kid is saying then we have to end the conversation right here. This kid JBA is one of the illest lyricist i have heard in the past decade in HIP HOP. What Joey is saying is what makes this kids special. These dudes just heard the album, they didn't LISTEN TO IT!
Yeah, I partly agree with you but Darcwonn made a really good point, he already has the formula down but content wise he needs to shape it up a little better and get it polished with concenpts. You have to remember that the ones you mentioning by example were from my era, the 90's who were already surrounded by dope hip hop so thats why people like Nas could make classic albums like Illmatic so easily. Keep in mind that this generation is slowly starting to reawaken with that kind of creativity.
Oh and on a side note, I think I said this before but I would love to see you on a spin off channel reviewing other types of music. Like new releases of the indie rock, folk, post punk etc... genres.
Great review, no doubt this guy has mad potential. I think whats exciting about him is we don't know where he's going next, will he keep the 90's boom bap style? Or switch it up completely? I dont know bout everyone else but this guy is exciting!
Content wise, it's hella dope, and he definitely has the potential to make a classic, and I can definitely see him, and the entire Pro Era crew becoming game-changers and making some classic albums. But, like they said in the video, Joey just needs to grow more and expand as a person and as an MC, which is already evident in his Summer Knights mixtape and that new Norwegian Breakfast song, that he's developing more and more, so will he end up making a classic, no doubt, but 1999 is still dope.
Idk what it takes for a project to be considered a "classic" but it definitely is in my mind. The only project (other than TPAB) to be released in my lifetime that I consider a classic.
wtf my comment just cut off .. but ,yeh true , when u put it like that , it makes sense . thanks anyway . keep doin watchu's doin , cos yeh it goes off , even if i dont know what or who th review is on , its just funny and interesting to watch u guys .
That dude darcwon looks like Ron Harper,Posdnuos and Rakim at the same damn time.lol. But anyway one of the tracks that stood out to me as something both lyrical and catchy was "Daily Routine". Does anyone know the name of the beat playing at the end of the video?
I remember you talking about hip hop and lack of respect to the older rappers. I think it's part of why you're so surprised that he's taking from the 90's sound. I mean, rock bands are still taking influences from the 70's, singer-songwriters are still taking influences from the 60's, jazz from the 40's and so on. Joey is at least born in the 90's.
it has been done before BUT wat makes it soo GUD is the fact that theyre young cats rappin bout shit that 99.9 percent young cats dnt rap about or even give a shit about. and the fact that it brings true hip hop heads bak to better times. the 90s wit the beats and the sound.
considering this was only a month in after the mixtape dropped its no big deal but its definitely classic. he definitely comes ith maturity with a playful wreckless mind of a child. these dudes got their spiritual sensesmoving too theyre bringin hip hop back.
I'm with Myke I like this mixtape when 1st listen and I didn't had no problems with his features because everybody in Pro Era did a good job espically on that song "Suspects" lol idk why Beezy only had a issue with Chuck Strangers but that's his opinion.
Hiii ! you probably wont do this , but can i just make a suggestion . theres really nothing wrong with your reviews , and i love how u get multiple perspectives on reviews and there plenty of funny moments . but , not to copy NeedleDrop , but do u rekon u guys could give albums and mixtapes ratings , out if 10 . it would be cool cos then u could see wheather it bumps in (feefo's) whip . or its really unique , different and deep lyrically (myke) . or th album fits well together and has a great
Nas was 21 when illMatic came out.. joey was 17 when 1999 came out.. And IllMatic was an album. let's remember that 1999 is a MIXTAPE. Joey Badass will be a legend and you can quote me on that.
why ken cryin in the thumbnail lmao
RIP CAPITAL STEEZ
why did he kill himself does anyone know ?
Canadian Goon thats part of the mystery bro ._.
Canadian Goon shizoprenics
zReTuRnZ II no
Free thinking + drugs will drive you crazy man. He’ll live forever though
"Chuck stranger just stay on the boards man" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
4 years later, I still very much consider this a classic and probably the best mixtape so far this decade. His lyrics are off the fucking chain, you guys seemed to look over that. I love DEHH, but I don't like this review.
100% agree
Yea really surprised they didn't talk more about the lyrics.
Pickle Tickler Agree on being one of the best mixtapes of the decade. This and XXX by Danny Brown for me.
This isn't a classic, did not impact hip hop in any way, shape, or form. Especially since he left this sound on his newest album
think a lot ofyall forget pimpire strikes back was a mix tape lolol roc would body joey any day
'Timeless, so age don't count in the booth, when your flow stay submerged in the fountain of youth' - Rakim Allah
tha line that stucc in my head "i sold my nikes for a new mic. i guess its safe to say i sold my soul for a new life"
Sold soul/sole (Nike sole). That’s still a dope line to me
one of the best lines on the tape.
mike(as in jordans)/mic
sole(as in sneaker soles)/soul
So this is where the Beezy and Chuck Strangers beef started, Lmao!
Stayed on 47 lol for while
Love DEHH but 7 years later and can safely say this is a classic
Death by kittens why?
It just perfectly captures 90s hip hop, depends on joeys legacy when his career is done tho. If Joey falls off then it likely won’t hold up as a classic, but I see him growing in popularity
You guys should do STEEZ's mixtape "Amerikkan Kurruption" :/
Long.Live.Steelo!
This is a classic fo sho
As a young dude i liked him alot because he brought me back to when i was younger and just hearing hip hop for the first time and for more younger ppl like me it gives us a chance to live what we couldnt fully understand when we were young not to mention he was spitting hard.
Why haven't you guys reviewed amerikkkan kurruption
They did but it's on their website
Y'all prolly listened to the tape once or twice then decided to make a review.. He had a lot of content...
6 years later, this is forsure a classic
this is my favorite DEHH review because of "Chuck strangers.....just stay on the boards"
Sucks to look at this Old Review when Steez died, damn...
And age has nothing to do with rappers making classic album. Nas made Illmatic when he was 21. Biggie made Ready to Die when he was 22.
That line Mike was talking about at the very end was by Capital Steez not Joey
Which one?
Braelin Grill the "stopped spitting fire cause my motherfucking lung is scorched"
proof they don’t know what they saying
I heard the whole interview he basically said that b/c of his age and musical content this mixtape would never be considered a classic which is bs. Jay-Z rapped about bitches, mafioso rap and hustling and "Reasonable Doubt" was labeled a classic album.
Watching this review makes me think that you guys didn't even listen to the mixtape... The content on that is crazy, and his lyrics are mind blowing
There's no excuse. I'm 16. I was born in 1996. I own plenty of 90's music. It's not fucking hard to just go back and listen to what you missed. Everyone acts like if you didn't grow with it, you can't listen to it.
im 16 and i think young hip hop fans need to listen t9 this and all of the great 90s hip hop from the beats coast bc thats real hip hop
Are you being ironic?
Waves is the Best song on there
Killuminati And Hardknock and Righteous Mnds i better imo
its not the best but the most iconic
Emmanuel Mondesir I just like it because he had the cleanest flow in that one But Righteous Minds Killuminati etc, are the most Lyrical.
Snakes is a vibe too
9 years and one day later and still one of the best hip hop albums I’ve listened to
I don't understand when people say he's not talented and his lyrics are bad. Then they'll throw out Lil Durk and Lightshow and tell me that's talent. Smh
RIP Steelo
This is a classic
The best mixtape ive heard in a LONG time
In the internet age, it's much easier than before for younger music fans to go back and listen to older stuff. One of the best mixtapes this year. Hands down.
Even if you haven't fully connected with the mixtape. He talking through his experiences and when it comes to lyrical content and metaphors. You have a lot of classic albums that had no direction but b/c of the lyrics and great production.
i dont think its a gimmick with joey badass hes dad propably raised him right on good hip hop i fully support this kid and think hip hop needs this right now
Joey's flow kinda reminds me of Nas
for real tho. everybody sayin Joey's a younger Nasir
I think the reason people are considering it be a classic, or at least so good is an age thing. The great 90's sound (being 18) is something I go BACK and listen to. I've never been around when this type of thing had been NEW.
hahaha the only line myke c remembered was a capital steez line
stevepartime jobs forreal, and capital steez didn't even get the credit
Can't believe no one mentioned T'nah Apex. Her verse was fucking amazing on the posse cut
if u ask me
1999 is the best debut album since illmatic
Needledrop already did Pro Era's newest mixtape, once these guys do it, I'll be super happy.
I found 1999 very similar to 1993 by Wiki, just because they both go back to this grittier dirtier time in hip hop. It also goes to show that no matter your age, generation, etc., you can easily make music similar to the old stuff.

Nate Cahnman yo we gotta work
Yes sir! Thanks for checking out the site.

This darkworm guy looks like a mix of Beezy and Rakim
Us dope emcees have always been here. We exist bro, we just don't get the recognition
just because he was seventeen when he dropped this, doesn't mean that it can't be a classic.
Yea
I'd consider it a classic now however one month after the release I was certainly not considering it a classic
NAS sounds young a shit on Illamatic, Eminem songs young on slim shady LP. It doesn’t make a difference to them, it doesn’t make a difference to this.
The thumbnail for this video is hilarious.
From what I understand, he doesn't plan to keep this sound. I read somewhere that he had the 90s sound in mind only for this mixtape. I think he will probably move forward and he has a ton of potential.
God man I totally fucked wit Chucks verse on fromdatomb
So your telling me that 21 yrs old is not young? Actually Nas was 19 when he finished illmatic. It was slated to drop in 92' but b/c of label differences it dropped in 94'.
i checked the website and it said you guys were recording the royalty review, thanks guys.

Nas made illmatic at 18-19 dropped the album when he was 20.
Agreed, Rakim was in his early 20s when he made Paid in Full, all time classic album
Idk what it takes for a project to be considered a "classic" but it definitely is in my mind. The only project (other than TPAB) to be released in my lifetime that I consider a classic.
GKMC is more of a classic than TPAB
eh
+Brian Tomer tpab is more classic than gkmc by alot imo
@@Briantomer tpab a classic
Great review really enjoyed it!

JOEY BADA$$ - 1999 w/ DEHH REVIEW: ua-cam.com/play/PLBREYXCBgn8302EjeJlBK8DTRLODoMlp9.html
5 years later, joey is top 5
#classic
😂😂😂😂
That dude darcwon looks like Ron Harper,Posdnuos and Rakim at the same damn time.lol. But anyway one of the tracks that stood out to me as something both lyrical and catchy was "Daily Routine". Does anyone know the name of the beat playing at the end of the video?

Loved this
Shouldn't use age as a reason why it isn't a classic...I don't think the mixtape is a classic but it's not because of his age...
it has been done before BUT wat makes it soo GUD is the fact that theyre young cats rappin bout shit that 99.9 percent young cats dnt rap about or even give a shit about. and the fact that it brings true hip hop heads bak to better times. the 90s wit the beats and the sound.
The song about growing up is called "Hardknock".
Do you guys plan on reviewing oddisee - people hear what they see or should I stop asking for it? Also, what beat is that at the end of this video?
Is there an Amerikkkan Korruption reveiw?
Nope.
Oh yeah Id love to hear what you guys think of Oddisee's latest too, been playing that a lot
considering this was only a month in after the mixtape dropped its no big deal but its definitely classic. he definitely comes ith maturity with a playful wreckless mind of a child. these dudes got their spiritual sensesmoving too theyre bringin hip hop back.
Chuck Stanger's verse on FromdaTombs, no matter how much you guys will bash on, is dope. I repeat it all the time. sick verse.
Can ya'll review J. Cole Friday night lights and the Come up mixtapes. I'd appreciate it
I'm with Myke I like this mixtape when 1st listen and I didn't had no problems with his features because everybody in Pro Era did a good job espically on that song "Suspects" lol idk why Beezy only had a issue with Chuck Strangers but that's his opinion.
This isn't a classic. This is one of the most refreshing hip hop projects in years.
Def a classic now lmao
For his age, in this generation, this is a classic. Str8 Up.
Fax homie put some respekk on the name
I liked it, agree with myke the flow wins over the content, I tell you wati heru is another mc from this crew that I REALLY rate
Hiii !
you probably wont do this , but can i just make a suggestion . theres really nothing wrong with your reviews , and i love how u get multiple perspectives on reviews and there plenty of funny moments . but , not to copy NeedleDrop , but do u rekon u guys could give albums and mixtapes ratings , out if 10 . it would be cool cos then u could see wheather it bumps in (feefo's) whip . or its really unique , different and deep lyrically (myke) . or th album fits well together and has a great
This dude called it! I love 1999, but I feel that B4.DA.$$ is classic.
U backwards bruh
Cliff B4.DA.$$ is Joey's best album
Sonic the Hedgehunk b4.da.$$ is his only album...
Sonic the Hedgehunk should've wrote project at the start...
Cliff I personally think that 1999 is his best project
I finally found the Darcwonn video!
"Oh? I blawg!"
nas being one of those who dropped a classic at a very young age
Good looking out, fam.
I wouldn't go as far to say that it's a classic yet, but give it a few years and it could be, no doubt.
Nas was 21 when illMatic came out.. joey was 17 when 1999 came out.. And IllMatic was an album. let's remember that 1999 is a MIXTAPE. Joey Badass will be a legend and you can quote me on that.
They've already said they're reviewing it this weekend.
speaking of illmatic, would u guys be reviewing Nas' new album that comes out on july 17th?
