Great album! Great recording. I was at Vassars 70th birthday show armt the wow hall in Eugene. What a class act. He gathered local musicians and ripped thru standards. What master
wb3...garcia played about ten twelve genres of music from well to out of his bleeping mind.....of course the great bluegrass artists are superb beyond belief...but give old garcia his due....if you don't believe me ask Vassar...i had seen him interviewed and he has the utmost repect for garcia...i even asked him myself before he passed....
OK Vassar and...? One might be a little more magnanimous. David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Peter Rowan, John Kahn AND Vassar!!! We may give credit where credit is due, for a truly Great performance that lives in our hearts, minds and memories. Great Stuff.
Someone said this was too slow. Coming from this dyed-in-the-wool Stanley fan, who the hell cares?! I just listened to Ralph and Carter do the song live, and it reminded me of this album. It's not about the speed of the song, it's about the feeling that they players put into it!
This is not the original "Pig in a Pen" from the "Round Record" album! I have tabbed and learned Jerry's first and second break from the original release and can play it note for note. This is a great recording, but possibly from another night at the Boarding House. Where did you get the recording? Is it possible that there were other releases of the "Round Record" with different tracks? Can someone respond and clarify. Thanks.
Love it! I've not heard this in YEARS and stumbled across it today. I had a copy of this album long ago. Panama Red and so many others... I have never met a person on earth who's even HEARD of it, and here it is. Thanks for posting!
This brings back sweet memories of middle school...or at least it would if I hadn't partially destroyed my brain with so any drugs over the years......Dane Cook is not funny.
Too slow, this song was written for the purpose of showing off. Lightning speed licks is what "Pig In A Pen" is all about, this is like hearing a drummer play "Sing, Sing, Sing" at 1/4 the speed.
One of the greatest albums ever. Mayb they all live forever in our hearts!!!
Honestly, these guys were GREAT. And unique. There was nothing like this band. The best of Bluegrass and Jerry. Thanks for the memories!
My grandpa played blugrass for over 60 years, he was from West Virgina, and this takes me back to some good ole down home picken.

This band is new to me. I need to listen to the rest of this album!!
There is something very magical about acoustic instruments.! Particularly when Jerry and Dave are collaborating!
Music that cannot be beat..wonderful music.
Good God, what can I say? Good musicians, playing well together.
Absolutely love this song and the whole album!!! I still have the original LP!
Want to sell it?

Thanks for posting this, but in the beginning with the silence, and then Jerry's intro -- That has to be included.

Its GREAT but I like a little speed....only a bump or two.
@@jeremyblack3394 try it on 1.25
Puts me back in Austin Texas in the seventies. Jerry and an allstar bluegrass band.

This is one of my fave live albums!
Thanks :)
Gotta love Vassar...
Wish I could find this album again.
I swear I remember another cut, something like "Trail of the Buffalo". dang
I like Garcia banjo style, it was kinda like a hit and miss engine, and full of improv, wish I could do that!
VERY GOOD TEMPO, LIKE IT WAS MEANT FROM THE START.
The picture shows the album, but this is not the recording from the album.
My favorite cd ever!
The real Garcia and the real Bluegrass early circa 1970’s
Do I hear a JUG in there?

This brings back sweet memories of middle school...or at least it would if I hadn't partially destroyed my brain with so any drugs over the years......Dane Cook is not funny.
He's as unfunny as they come.
hang in there buddy ..I love you!!!
Classic...
Great tune. But this is not the version used in the album. The album version is faster and fierier.
Sometimes he forgot the words in that one and vassar went on oodlin' in his own little world.
@speakerchef actually allison krauss and union station now hold that title
Good ol' Jarr!
@troutmaster67 kep em chewin! good stuff!
Is it just me or is the recording dragging a little bit? I remember it faster.
Billy strings🌈😁
Can't we all just get along?
(ducks)
Wheeeew Heeew! Dancing in a chair! (~);=
