  • Putting dementia on stage: How two productions from the IDEAL research programme started conversations
Dr Claire Pentecost, Programme Manager, and Dr Catherine Charlwood, IDEAL Research Translation and Impact Manager, joined us from the IDEAL research programme to discuss ‘The World Turned Upside Down (a play and film) and ‘Y Bont/The Bridge’ (a one-act opera). Both productions staged the experience of living with dementia both for the individual and those around them. In different ways, both of these arts-based projects foreground is the difficulties in communication during dementia: what happens when your voice isn’t heard? What happens when someone’s reaction turns a normal conversation into a dramatic confrontation?
Drawing on insights from the IDEAL research programme about the factors which influence quality of life for people with mild-to-moderate dementia and carers living in the community, Claire and Catherine share the process of co-producing these artworks, how audiences reacted and ways that you too could use these free resources.
