- BMW E92 335i N54 Cracked Valve Cover Replacement
A while a go i noticed my valve cover had a hairline crack in it, that was weeping oil. I have actually had this new replacement valve cover for a few months and finally put it on, while waiting for a few other parts to arrive.
Let us know if you have any questions about the aftermarket part or tackling this job yourself. This is the one i used down here in Aus, ebay.to/3dTBj3k However it looks like all the aftermarket ones are the same, this is cheapest i could find on amazon. amzn.to/3aOhcSw

Hey mate. Just wondering how the ebay valve cover's holding up?
N54 valve covers are definitely prone to crack in that section. Nice informative video. Love the content 👍🏻
Thanks dude, i watched your 350z vs 335i vid the other day, is that your car? She definitely halls ass.
Zero To 60 yup, I’ve been FBO stock turbo for 1 year now. I’ve replaced all of the things you’re mentioning and more on this channel haha. Definitely great content for people who are looking into purchasing an n54.👌🏻
@@TrapN54Tv Hopefully we can encourage some people to take the plunge with N54 ownership. They are not as scary on the wallet as some people think, especially if you can do the work yourself.
Zero To 60 you couldn’t have said it any better. It’s a perfect car for a diy’r and once you replace all common failures, you’ll be problem free 👍🏻
Currently replacing my valve cover because it's cracked in the exact same place as yours
You should try crc gdi intake valve cleaner. I did this job in 4 hours and the valves were spot less. Just use small wire brushes and some micro fiber rags with brake cleaner for the intake runners
Well that's encouraging. I'm definitely trying this type of cover when mine cranks lol
Well I'm about to put on a cheap Chineseium one on mine too tomorrow. From what I understand yours lasted quite well?? But I can't recall now. The one that's been on there has been on for far too long so I'm confident anything will be an improvement.
I rate them. I have fitted a few china ones to a few cars now. I know shops that use them. No issues if you fit it correctly. Take your time seating it down. Very easy to miss place the gasket.
Wonderful video and very helpful since my N54 just developed a crack in almost the same place. It's so hard to tell with time lapse but could you estimate the time it took to do the job?
Ive done 3 of these now. I allow 4 hours if i am filming, i'd expect to do it in 2-3 if not filming. The first one i did was 5 hours, but i spent an hour looking for a deep 10mm socket.....
How did it hold up? Any cracks or leaks? Pcv system working properly?
This rocker cover is now on my new motor. Still going strong.
My valve cover cracked in exactly the same place! Maybe it's factory fault? Let us know if aftermarket valve cover was worth to buy :D
I prefer the term design that could be improved :P hahah. How old was your cover when cracked?. My car is coming up 13 years old, so it has had a good run.
@@ZeroTo60Tube car is from 10/2006 but I have no idea if it was ever replaced before, I noticed it after changing valve cover gasket :|
Mine cracked on the side of the valve cover still needs to be replaced it cracked recently and it is the stock valve cover of my 2008 335i
Hello there. I have change my Gasket 2 In a 2008 BMW 335i and still leak a little bid. Any suggestions on was going on? and the leak is right on the metal channel and the side,,
Common people have an issue where oil is trapped in the heat shield that is just below the valve cover. If you have only just changed the cover, it's quite normal to see and smell oil for a bit. You can speed up the process by removing the heat shield and fully cleaning it. Or it may burn away the residue after a few more heat cycles.
Do you think its worth it to go with an aluminum rocker cover ?
For looks… yes. Not reliability. A new plastic one will last 10 years on average.
@@ZeroTo60Tube yeah mines 12 years old, leaking into my plugs, figured I'd change the whole thing rather than just the gasket but hard to find an actual comparative analysis between OEM and an aluminum one other than people just trashing the OEM for being plastic. Thanks mate.
Ive been using water methanol by AEM on my n54 for awhile now i pulled the intake off and found it helps to clean the vavles.
That is a huge advantage to running water meth or port injection. Im hoping i see the same advantage once i get my port injection on and running. Have you had your car for long? Many other mods?
@@ZeroTo60Tube About 4 years its done 196000 still OG water pump and HPFP upgraded LPFP Ive done intercooler. FTP charge pipe, AEM water methanol injection, Turbo smart diverter vavles, new index 12 injectors, pod filters, catch can, e30 mix fuel, xhp gear box tune stage 3, custom tune by Motiv motorsport check them out. Dynoed on a dyno dynamics dyno 407whp still stock turbos new ones soon i was wating for these to go but im still waiting.
@Grant i would get a set of index 12 injectors if your having injector problems.. port injection is where you need more fuel when running big boost with bigger turbos and more e85.
@@tighematthew diamn bro 200k miles on original turbos and water pump what year is your car?
@@1991june it was 2007 but it caught fire in the driveway total loss sad day... it was from the blower motor wiring factory fault they have recalls on the e9x.. if you have one get it checked...
Just replaced my N54 VC and VCG, cracked in exactly the same spot.
Plastic engine parts FTW.
The yearly checkup - would you still recommend it boys ?
Still going strong on my 750hp motor
Mine has the same crack and im like wow how’s that possible that everyone with a N54 are with the same problem
i have a crack in my valve cover in the same exact place the same way and lemth
length*
Did your car smoke ?
hi bro dont put chep cover on it it's not worth it I done with my car already really its make alote problem with pcv and vacuum pro after I throw it order orignal again
I’ve read that about a few of them, but I couldn’t find out what was actually wrong with the ones people had problems with. Do you know what it was by any chance? Pcv valve itself? Incorrect passages with the cover?
I replaced my original with a cheap ebay replica. Pcv passages were poorly constructed/molded and cracked. I had an aluminum pcv valve in from the beginning but the pressure build up between the head ports and the pcv valve is where the cover cracked. Went back to original oem and cover (pcv area) holds 24plus psi no cracks, no problems. But hey, they aren't all bad. You may have good luck. It would be really cool to do a video that shows and explains the internal functions and pathways of the internal pcv system in these covers. Almost everyone thinks they understand the dual function that the N54 valve covers are responsible but I bet they'd be surprised!
Interesting to see how it goes
Definitely, i wouldn't put this on a customers car, but i am keen to see how it lasts, especially under some high boost.
@@ZeroTo60Tube how did the cover do after all this time?
100% do not recommend a cheap valve cover on the n54. There's a reason why metal ones exist. They heat up and warp over time Chinese one is going to do this even quicker than OEM.
But the metal ones are just too expensive :/
@@E-Tuning Yes they are. I would recommend saving up for oem. Even the oem cover warps. Most shops recommend replacing them when doing the gasket for this reason.
Tyler Padgett yep bought a oem for my n54 didnt wanna risk it with cheap chrap ✌🏻
I don't know, had 2 chines ones. Both of them had a too small washer for the back left. So the washer didn't fit over the thing from the head and leaked again.
Ended up buying a original one from bmw
So the one you linked on Ebay for 200AUD, how is it holding up?
Yeah been on since this vid and no issues as yet. Car has been running 27 psi for a few weeks as well.
@@ZeroTo60Tube Oh yeah that alright, my N52s valve cover has a hairline crack and I'm just thinking what the best option is, either a genuine one from FCP Euro or one from eBay
Loving the build guys! Cant wait to see the results! Great content!
Mine cracked AFTER I changed the VCG...FML this job sucks ass
Awww man that would suck. I can confirm this new cover has been on for about a leak and the oil smell has stopped. Its a nice change. haha.
@@ZeroTo60Tube Chinesium still holding up?
Yay first view
