@K2Gardens - You'll love it even more after you listen to Ivan Rebroff. *He had the widest vocal range from soprano to the deepest bass.* At 0:41 and 1:27 the great Ivan Rebroff sings the LOWEST note ever recorded by a human being, and he is the same one who sings the high notes at 1:00 ❣️❣️❣️
I know very little German but this traditional Christmas song makes me reminisce and reflect on the passage of time and fills my heart with compassion, joy, and sadness. We've played it on Classical Christmas FM for the last 3 years consecutively. Lots of excellent traditional Christmas stuff played on that station and this particular tune is among the best of lthe lot. We usually start listening to the channel late September and continue through to the end of the year.
Incredible how music of this magnitude can have you in tears . Tears of joy and sadness in full glorious measure . Wonderful and so evocative , makes Christmas even more wondrous and special . Jesus .
When this comes on the radio, everything has to stop and the volume goes right up, while I wallow in the beauty of Bryn''s deep, soothing voice and the lovely 'motherly' sound of the London Voices, and I sigh along with the rising and falling of the strings, shivers going up and down my spine.
Be sure to listen to Ivan Rebroff's recording. This site is not letting me post a link. *He had the widest vocal range from soprano to the deepest bass.* At 0:41 and 1:27 the great Ivan Rebroff sings the LOWEST note ever recorded by a human being, and he is the same one who sings the high notes at 1:00 ❣️❣️❣️
Spent last two Christmas and New Year in Germany with son and family. Brought back priceless memories. Beautiful music.. connect the earbuds and enjoy peace in yr busy and noisy day. Happy New Year from Muskoka, Canada.
I heard this song sung by Sir Bryn Terfel at the Royal Albert Hall on Christmas Eve 2020 and in the midst of all this turmoil with Covid 19 etc I felt at peace . A Masterpiece sung by a Great Master. P.S. I'm not religious
+Joe Foerster Yup, Beautiful voice, beautiful music. Gorgeous lyrics... I just don't think there is a more moving hymn. well, maybe little donkey! I do love that!
Hearing Bryn live is amazing. A voice so big and powerful to almost shake the building and yet he could sing in the sweetest, softest whisper of a sound that could be heard throughout the hall. Now THAT has just got to be heard. An amazing voice. Thanks for the post.
as lovely as it gets. I have loved this song since i was in Vienna in 1970... still love to sing it at Christmas! Bryn Terfel's voice is so powerful--- and reminds me of all the good men who have looked with wonder at the baby and the mother, and dedicated their lives to take care of them...

A very effective and suggestive arrangement of this melody that I too have listened to and performed in Austria. I have lived in Vienna for 10 years, just as I have often visited Salzburg and Munich: these memories, these images that I have seen live are so fixed in my mind!
The first Christmas after my mother's death I came across this version... God sent. Gentle, comforting and reaffirmed my fervent hope that she was at peace and in Heaven.
Thank you for this post! I first heard this song and version by Bryn Terfel when he performed at the Big Sing '09 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Brings back wonderful memories... so thank you again!
STAGGERINGLY beautiful ! How can I not have heard this before ? Deep validation of Nietschze's observation that "Without music, life would be a mistake".
His German pronunciation is flawless and the arrangement is the most beautiful I’ve yet heard. He sang this much better than did Kaufmann on his recent CD......and he’s the top tenor right now AND a native German.
Isn't this simply lovely..just delicious. I first heard this Barry Wordsworth arrangement on Classic FM a year or two ago and it literally stopped me in my tracks. I could not believe something so gorgeous and tender had been performed. Don't you just love Terfel.. what a hero Wonderful. I have sent this to friends.. lots.. all over the world. And the feedback, the response has been.. really lovely. Thank you WF
gorgeous. It doesn't get better than this. Why doesn't America celebrate - a program called " a really great voice" IT would transform the country - any country.
I agree with you, unfortunately my fellow Americans believe that a great voice is either a Miley Cyrus or a Bryan Adams. There needs to be a lot of educating and work done.
Long Evenings. Thank you for sharing this beautiful rendering of a lovely carol. Can you tell me the album this version is on? It is the only one I a can find of Bryn where he sings part of it in English. I would love to have a copy.
ENGLISH . . . Truly beautiful . . . Still, still, still, Because it wants to sleep child. The angels do beautiful carol, Music In the manger. Still, still, still, Because it's child wants to sleep. Sleep, sleep, sleep, My dear child, sleep! Mary is doing down you sing And her faithful heart offer. Sleep, sleep, sleep, My dear child, sleep! Great, great, great The Lovers is great! God has left the throne of heaven And have to travel on the roads. Great, great, great The love is more than great. We, we, we, Do call all to you: Do us kingdom of heaven open, If we must die once. We, we, we, We call on all to you.
This is beautiful indeed. But do yourself a favor, be sure also to listen to Ivan Rebroff's recording. Lovely recording but judging by the photos it appears that baby Jesus wants to be a 19th century architect and visit a lot of German Christmas markets?
I’m so grateful to Classic FM for introducing me to this song. I melt whenever I hear it.
Me too.

And now they play a recording one of their hosts made of this song in place of this recording. It doesn’t compare.
Thank you so much Richard...what a beautiful rendition of a piece of music I have always loved.🎉❤MERRY CHRISTMAS
Fantastic arrangement , brilliant voice , music from Heaven ☺
Incredible how music of this magnitude can have you in tears . Tears of joy and sadness in full glorious measure . Wonderful and so evocative , makes Christmas even more wondrous and special . Jesus .

Don’t know why, but this beautiful music is so powerful. Heart breaking classic by a wonderful singer.
I’m obsessed with this arrangement and am rendered powerless when this recording is played. Gorgeous recording!
I heard this on Classic FM yesterday and couldn't leave my car until it ended. Totally captivated.
Andy Orr it is the essence of 🎄 Christmas.

This man can absolutely bring tears to my eyes with his beautiful deep Welsh voice.

Just two words....Absolutely Beautiful .

Very beautiful interpretation.
The Welsh flavours of Bryn's voice match perfectly with the German melody :)

Taking comfort from this beautiful song.

Beautifully arranged and sung - the views of Wien resplendent in its winter coat are also lovely!

He is really the quintessential singer of songs - lieder in any language.
Beautiful rendition what a voice christmas in a song
The first Christmas after my mother's death I came across this version... God sent. Gentle, comforting and reaffirmed my fervent hope that she was at peace and in Heaven.
Same situation, well said

I believe the arranger is Mack Wilberg. I too am stopped in my tracks when I hear it.
The arranger, [ his regular arranger ] is Barry Wordsworth.
Xmas day 2018.

Does anyone know where I can find sheet music for this arrangement? Or indeed any arrangement for low voice?
ENGLISH . . . Truly beautiful . . .
