The 11 best crashes at the 11Foot8 bridge in Durham, NC, recorded by Jürgen Henn (c)
FAQ
What is the location of the 11foot8 bridge?
201 Gregson St in Durham, NC (intersection with Peabody St)
Why is the bridge so low?
This train trestle is about 100 years old. At the time when it was built, there were no standards for minimum clearance.
How often do trucks crash into the bridge?
On average, about once a month a truck gets visibly damaged at the bridge. However, every day I see trucks that trip the overheight warning lights, stop and turn into the side street.
Why don’t they fix it?
Depends on who “they” are and on what “fix” means. The North Carolina Railroad Company owns the train trestle, and their concern is primarily with keeping the trains running and keeping them running safely. So their concern is mainly with reducing the impact of the truck crashes on the actual structure of the train trestle. As far as they are concerned, they solved that problem by installing the crash beam.
The city of Durham has installed “low clearance” signs on each of the 3 blocks leading up to the trestle (Gregson is a one-way road). There is an “overheight when flashing” sign with flashing lights that are triggered by vehicles that are too tall. Several blocks ahead of the trestle the speed limit is 25 MPH. The folks from the city planning department said that they made an effort to prevent accidents.
The North Carolina Dept. of Transportation maintains the road, but not the signage. I suspect they have much bigger problems to deal with statewide than this bridge.
Is the clearance signage accurate?
The clearance signage displays a maximum safe clearance - and yes, in that sense it is accurate. The actual clearance of the crash beam right in front of the trestle is 11 feet 10.8 inches, which gives it a 2.8 inch safety margin. The MUTCD allows for a maximum of 3 inches difference between the signage and the actual clearance.
Metric, please!
Would this situation be better if the signage were metric? Well … take a look at his website: 2m40.com (Warning: French. Metric)
For the convenience of our metric-only audience, here are the measurements we’re talking about in meters:
11foot8 (11 feet 8 inches) = 3.556 meters
11 feet 10.8 inches = 3.627 meters
Safety margin: 7.1 cm (at the crest of the road)
Can’t the road be lowered?
That would be prohibitively expensive because a sewer main runs just a few feet below the road bed. That sewer main also dates back about a hundred years and, again, at the time there were no real standards for minimum clearance for railroad underpasses.
Can’t the bridge be raised?
Here, too, the question is who would want to pay the millions of dollars to raise the tracks a couple of feet? To accomplish this, the grade of the tracks would have to changed on both sides of the trestle, probably for several miles. That would require rebuilding all trestles in Durham. And NS would have to shut down this busy track for months. I don’t think they are interested in that idea.
Is the signeage inadequate?
The signeage is pretty good. Large signs alert driver to the low clearance several blocks before the bridge. Overheight vehicles trip a light switch that turns on flashing warning lights.right at the bridge.
Should there be more signeage?
It’s hard to see how more “low-clearance” signs will significantly improve the situation. But maybe a different kind of signeage would get the driver’s attention.
Could they install a low-clearance bar?
A low clearance bar is a bar suspended by chains ahead of the bridge. Overheight vehicles hit that bar first and the noise alerts the driver to to the problem. I understand that this approach has been successful in other places, but it’s not practical here. There are many overheight trucks that have to be able to drive right up to the bridge and turn onto Peabody St. in order to deliver supplies to several restaurants. Making Peabody St inaccessible from Gregson St would make the restaurant owners and the delivery drivers very unhappy.
Why are they using yellow flashing lights?
Warning lights have to be yellow according to the NC traffic laws.
Are the drivers stupid?
No idea. They certainly seem distracted and the rental truck drivers are also probably inexperienced.
Will insurance cover the damages?
Most truck rental insurance policies specifically exclude overhead damage from coverage. However, a good auto insurance or liability insurance might pick up the tab. Check with your agent. Or even better - don’t hit the bridge!
Listen, the 11’8” bridge is out there. It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until you take a detour.
Lol you made my day bro hahahaha
It does, however, feel those trucks hit it every time.

Penske rentals: “would you like to add the $10 damage waiver insurance?”
Customer: “No, it’ll be fine”
Underrated comment!
Penske rentals: “You’re gonna wish you did..”
Actually it wouldn't matter. Truck rental companies in the area flat out tell these people the insurance will not cover this. Every single one of these jackoffs who drive a rented truck under this thing just cost themselves $15-20K out of pocket.
@@JL-sm6cg that's hilarious. I wish someone who trashed a rental truck gave their first hand account on it somewhere for us to see.
Perhaps Penske and other rental outlets might give them a heads up?/~~like : "
do NOT under any circumstances go near this train bridge..." might help.....
The civil engineer that designed the beam to protect the bridge itself from getting impacted should be given recognition.
Unlike the one who designed the bridge itself
@@ab-mr6qv Fair. We just can't blame the drivers only since it's painfully evident that it's a deeper problem that won't go away on it's own. They even built a beam to prevent structural damage which just goes to prove it hasn't gone unnoticed. And yet, no change. Still funny, though
@@soyitielThey have deepened and widened it a few times since these videos were taken
@@soyitiel honestly, I do think the drivers are to blame for this. Like, there are a crap-ton of signs, including a flashing one, to tell them they should not pass that bridge. One of them litterally measures their truck height and turns the traffic lights red if they're too tall! If your driving such a large vehicle it's even more imperative that you look closely at the signals in order not to cause accidents or harm people. You shouldn't drive a truck if you can't read signals.
@@cit5184 I think your assesment is also fair. It seems like the drivers involved in this incidents might be a bit too distracted for their own sake. And yet, no matter how much signaling they add near the bridge, these incidents keep happening, which means that, objectively speaking, the signaling approach is not doing enough. More substantial meassures are long overdue. That's why I think both parties, the city and the drivers, are at fault.
I love how you can almost always hear someone cheering from the sidewalk after every crash.
Thats people in their unit who record it!
There are people who make a day trip of it. They bring blankets and picnic baskets and everything. It's the most popular tourist attraction in Durham.
@@dii392Does it still happen often enough after they raised the bridge to make it worth a visit?
@@MemoirsofaBasketcase From what I’ve heard, yes. Most semi trucks are 13’6 while the new clearance is only 12’8. It might have helped some of the rental trucks though.

The amount of damage that bridge bar takes is unbelievable. That’s the real hero here.
And at that scale, bending is normal. Even when the bridge is hit, you can see the concrete bending. But the bar just stays where it is. While a know hardness and tensile strength are different, it almost feels like that bar could hold the entire bridge no problem.
@@justsomeguy5628The only thing I don't understand is why they didn't lower the bridge instead of raising it. Making it more obvious is the best protection!
@@GlobalFlyer there are sewer pipes underneath thats why it hasnt been lowrred
@@GlobalFlyerthat’s because they didn’t raise it to prevent crashes. they raised it so that it would match the height of another trestle nearby so that trains wouldn’t have to slow down when moving through
And in the event it gives in some day, it's much cheaper to replace the bar instead of the bridge...
The funniest thing about the bridge is they raised it eight inches, put a detection system to turn the light red when there's an overhead truck coming through, the red light is a minute long and there's a flashing sign that warns them about the bridge, yet they still crash
The funniest part is the red light just makes people speed up lol

The fact that the lights are RED and they still breeze threw the intersection is mind boggling
How else are they expected to clear 14 feet under 11'8? Gotta have that momentum.
The road has a HEIGHT sensor it turns RED before they even reach the light to let them know to TURN around, so the issue is actually that they’re ignoring it 🤷🏻♀️
@@georgiasarahjones24 I think it’s hilarious they end up intensifying the crash because of it

Bridge Warning: "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN!"
Driver: "I thought they were just kidding."
I admire the structural integrity of that battering beam !
sam iam it's a railroad bridge, it's designed to be strong. It needs to be able to support 100+ Ton freight cars rolling across it
Tanker 10001 Yes but these trucks hits a safety beam well ahead of the bridge so that it does not get damaged at all.
Saves them from re-inspecting the bridge every week.
The bridge it's self is designed to take massive weight vertically not take lateral hit. They put that beam out in front of the actual bridge to stop the bridge getting hit. Amazing how strong that beam is though. Literally hundreds of hits and hasn't budged.
Yes they set up a new system that trips red light and turns on "over height must turn" sign on the traffic light. Yet they blow through the red light and the warning and destroy trucks anyway. Just goes to show you can't fix stupid.
It's too often rentals because they are rented by people who don't have CDL and don't know to pay attention to bridge heights.
sam iam I was thinking the same thing..... especially at the rate and speed it gets hit!
There should be a camera on the other side aimed at the windshields so we can see the drivers reaction!

@sour airhead However you can see that he tapped bridges before that too. So I guess he needs to learn to trust his first instincts more instead of trying it anyway
they need a swinging sign that is the same hight as the bridge that reads: IF YOU HIT THIS SIGN YOU WILL HIT THAT BRIDGE.
They have that a block before the bridge. These drivers should not be operating these vehicles. Any trucker should know their truck's clearance. I think that's why a lot of these are moving/rental trucks
@@DasSlenderMan every truck rental place within 100 miles of that bridge explicitly warns the driver not to use that road
Those don't work. There is a low bridge near me that has the swing sign they hit it and keep going until they get stuck. Idiots will still be idiotic even if you give them warning.
they have that way before this bridge. Then they have a sensor as well that turns the light red before the bridge. It stays red for a minute, along with a flashing sign that reads too high, turn around. Along with signs and flashing lights and colored beam.
And still we have lots of videos like these.
I think the drivers are just retarded man honestly.
4:15 This dude reverses and holds up traffic just to get stuck and humiliate himself. You can't make this shit up.
He had to reverse because he turned the wrong way onto a one-way street.
Literal npc
He's the only one who also didn't mess up his vehicle. I drove a semi for 5 years. Most people think it's no different than a car. But I learned quick to stop using my cell phone GPS. Use the truck GPS and it will avoid low bridges on the route. Most truck drivers are visiting areas they are unfamiliar with. It's not like you driving in the same city you grew up in for 20 years. Probably a shit marked one way street. Also you might have fit under that bridge if you were weighted down but with the truck empty it scrapes the top. I feel like if you can make a compilation of crashes at one specific location the issue isn't the drivers it's the location.
The bus led that truck to the barber 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Customer service agent at truck rental place: "Oh, you're going downtown? Would you like insurance?"
Driver: "No, I don;t think that will be necessary"
Customer service: "Okay, sign here please" smiling slyly...
😄
This falls under negligence and won't be covered by insurance anyway.
Also falls under damage from a legal violation (disregarding signage), which is also not covered under insurance.
Also that light is set up where it only gives turn arrow if there's an over height stopped at it. MUST run red to hit bridge.
The damage will probably not be covered, but not for the reason you give. Damage from ordinary negligence is covered, but not for willful negligence. For example, I accidentally ran a red light thinking it had turned green (I forgot to check it), and my car was totaled. Buy my insurance still covered it. The reason that this truck damage will probably not be covered is because moving truck insurance policies and CDW's/LDW's generally do not cover overhead and tire damage.
This bridge is in my town; every time someone hit the bridge, it would be on the news. There were even lights that would start to flash if you were too high. About a year ago, they changed the flashing light to a stop light and message board that tells you to turn and they STILL run right into it.
Literally all they need to do is lower the road hight by a foot, and these trucks would get through. See no reason why they wouldn’t, it’s about 20 ft of digging and re laying.
Why doesnt your lazy city raise the damn bridge knowing it causes all this trouble
@@YasilTorvanna The railroad company won't allow it.
@@megaascension2748 Not surprising , that's how railroad companies are.
@@TheBenchPressMan. Cant lower the road because there are sewer lines running under the road. Can't raise the bridge because the rail company isn't interested in doing that. How about know your truck and don't do stupid shit. I had to drive a box truck once and came to a bridge that had a weight limit. I didnt know how much I weighed so I want another way. After that, I found out the weight.
