The 11 best crashes at the 11Foot8 bridge in Durham, NC, recorded by Jürgen Henn (c)
FAQ
What is the location of the 11foot8 bridge?
201 Gregson St in Durham, NC (intersection with Peabody St)
Why is the bridge so low?
This train trestle is about 100 years old. At the time when it was built, there were no standards for minimum clearance.
How often do trucks crash into the bridge?
On average, about once a month a truck gets visibly damaged at the bridge. However, every day I see trucks that trip the overheight warning lights, stop and turn into the side street.
Why don’t they fix it?
Depends on who “they” are and on what “fix” means. The North Carolina Railroad Company owns the train trestle, and their concern is primarily with keeping the trains running and keeping them running safely. So their concern is mainly with reducing the impact of the truck crashes on the actual structure of the train trestle. As far as they are concerned, they solved that problem by installing the crash beam.
The city of Durham has installed “low clearance” signs on each of the 3 blocks leading up to the trestle (Gregson is a one-way road). There is an “overheight when flashing” sign with flashing lights that are triggered by vehicles that are too tall. Several blocks ahead of the trestle the speed limit is 25 MPH. The folks from the city planning department said that they made an effort to prevent accidents.
The North Carolina Dept. of Transportation maintains the road, but not the signage. I suspect they have much bigger problems to deal with statewide than this bridge.
Is the clearance signage accurate?
The clearance signage displays a maximum safe clearance - and yes, in that sense it is accurate. The actual clearance of the crash beam right in front of the trestle is 11 feet 10.8 inches, which gives it a 2.8 inch safety margin. The MUTCD allows for a maximum of 3 inches difference between the signage and the actual clearance.
Metric, please!
Would this situation be better if the signage were metric? Well … take a look at his website: 2m40.com (Warning: French. Metric)
For the convenience of our metric-only audience, here are the measurements we’re talking about in meters:
11foot8 (11 feet 8 inches) = 3.556 meters
11 feet 10.8 inches = 3.627 meters
Safety margin: 7.1 cm (at the crest of the road)
Can’t the road be lowered?
That would be prohibitively expensive because a sewer main runs just a few feet below the road bed. That sewer main also dates back about a hundred years and, again, at the time there were no real standards for minimum clearance for railroad underpasses.
Can’t the bridge be raised?
Here, too, the question is who would want to pay the millions of dollars to raise the tracks a couple of feet? To accomplish this, the grade of the tracks would have to changed on both sides of the trestle, probably for several miles. That would require rebuilding all trestles in Durham. And NS would have to shut down this busy track for months. I don’t think they are interested in that idea.
Is the signeage inadequate?
The signeage is pretty good. Large signs alert driver to the low clearance several blocks before the bridge. Overheight vehicles trip a light switch that turns on flashing warning lights.right at the bridge.
Should there be more signeage?
It’s hard to see how more “low-clearance” signs will significantly improve the situation. But maybe a different kind of signeage would get the driver’s attention.
Could they install a low-clearance bar?
A low clearance bar is a bar suspended by chains ahead of the bridge. Overheight vehicles hit that bar first and the noise alerts the driver to to the problem. I understand that this approach has been successful in other places, but it’s not practical here. There are many overheight trucks that have to be able to drive right up to the bridge and turn onto Peabody St. in order to deliver supplies to several restaurants. Making Peabody St inaccessible from Gregson St would make the restaurant owners and the delivery drivers very unhappy.
Why are they using yellow flashing lights?
Warning lights have to be yellow according to the NC traffic laws.
Are the drivers stupid?
No idea. They certainly seem distracted and the rental truck drivers are also probably inexperienced.
Will insurance cover the damages?
Most truck rental insurance policies specifically exclude overhead damage from coverage. However, a good auto insurance or liability insurance might pick up the tab. Check with your agent. Or even better - don’t hit the bridge! - Розваги

@@dii392Does it still happen often enough after they raised the bridge to make it worth a visit?
@@MemoirsofaBasketcase From what I’ve heard, yes. Most semi trucks are 13’6 while the new clearance is only 12’8. It might have helped some of the rental trucks though.

That last truck was smart enough to make a left turn, but then it came back😂
Based on the signs it looks like that left turn was the wrong way on a one-way road. So that guy had only one legal option from where he started - to go straight. He solved this problem by first going left the wrong way on a one-way road, then backing up and turning right so he hit the bridge.

The funniest thing about the bridge is they raised it eight inches, put a detection system to turn the light red when there's an overhead truck coming through, the red light is a minute long and there's a flashing sign that warns them about the bridge, yet they still crash
The funniest part is the red light just makes people speed up lol
They need to lower the road cheaper
@@josephmclennan1229 They would've done it if they could. There is a pipe system running under it.
@@josephmclennan1229 there are sewer lines under the road. Can't go any deeper.
Except for the last one, which was appeared to be a refrigerated unit and therefore had someone TRAINED driving it, these all appeared to be rentals, except maybe the moving vans. Thats called a trump supporter
We have a similar problem bridge in Lansing Michigan. The Pennsylvania Ave. bridge near Potter Park. It's a bit higher than the bridge in this video at 12 feet 0 inches. Everyone in town knows about it, but it still gets hit now and then.
The bridge is owned by the railroad, which claims that this isn't their problem. The city can't lower the street, because it already ends up underwater when the nearby Grand River floods.
The bridge got raised to 12'4 and it still gets hit every so often. They only raised it to match the rest of the track, but otherwise they probably can't raise it any higher and they can't lower it because of the sewer system underneath
Props to the cameraman for staying outside all these years just to get us this awesome footage Man’s a true hero

@@Scavenger82 it would just be

Yeah there is one there now.
The amount of damage that bridge bar takes is unbelievable. That’s the real hero here.
And at that scale, bending is normal. Even when the bridge is hit, you can see the concrete bending. But the bar just stays where it is. While a know hardness and tensile strength are different, it almost feels like that bar could hold the entire bridge no problem.
@@justsomeguy5628The only thing I don't understand is why they didn't lower the bridge instead of raising it. Making it more obvious is the best protection!
@@GlobalFlyer there are sewer pipes underneath thats why it hasnt been lowrred
@@GlobalFlyerthat’s because they didn’t raise it to prevent crashes. they raised it so that it would match the height of another trestle nearby so that trains wouldn’t have to slow down when moving through
And in the event it gives in some day, it's much cheaper to replace the bar instead of the bridge...
I remember driving a 13'6"" up to an overpass somewhere up in New England. The overpass was marked 13'3". It was like 2am, no traffic. I had a heavy load, my trailer had dropped within an inch of the tires, 3, maybe 4 inches. I knew it was like Vegas close. So I crept forward standing with my door open. Once I edged the front of the trailer past the other side I knew I was in like Flynn. I DID NOT drive that route on the way out.
Even building a 13'3" is quite the risk on the construction. Imagine people slap their roof against that frequently too
Amazing lol 😂👍🏼
It's 'in like FLINT". ;-)
@@bufordt.justice2201 "In like Flynn" is a slang phrase meaning "having quickly or easily achieved a goal or gained access as desired."
@@HerecomestheCalavera I'm very well of the meaning of "In like FLINT", which apparently in various people's minds has become twisted/misunderstood/misrepresented as "In like Flynn".
Check out the movie "In like Flint", which is the origin of the actual phrase and you will see that your version is inaccurate...
This is almost as good as truck drivers who can’t quite grasp what a railroad crossing gate is for!
interesting how many of these trucks run the red light too
I guess you are too distracted by running the light to notice the other problem?
Or... oblivious drivers don’t notice either the light or the bridge height?
@@joedellinger9437 yeah I would imagine the best way to grab attention is not a little sign next to a traffic light because the drivers' attention is on the traffic light. Maybe have the traffic light have Green-Yellow-Red flash rapidly or something.
I wonder if the light is designed to turn red immediately as soon as a truck that is too tall is noticed, that in they hope the driver will stop and see the sign flashing. But most are too dumb anyways lol.
@@7.3powerstroke6 possibly, and we don't see the times that it works...because well, that would be very boring. I'm just thankful the youtube algorithms thought I would enjoy watching trucks hit bridges.

The coincidences are amazing. All of these accidents happened on the driver’s last day on the job.
On the contrary, most of the "victims" are rental truck drivers who have little to no experience with large vehicles.
@@Ih8kone then they shouldn’t be behind the wheel lol plain and simple
Lolol funny coincidence!!!!
@@Ih8kone You don't need experience. You need basic common sense and patience. Do not drive under a bridge unless you're 100 percent sure that your vehicle will fit. Do some fact-checking (height of your vehicle, weight of your vehicle) before driving out of the parking lot.

Maybe I'm demented, but this is some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen.
I love how half of these include both a rental truck, and the driver blowing through a red light
It never ceases to amaze me how many trucks blow the red light.
Red for 5 seconds and still plow through the intersection
It’s a lot harder for trucks to stop you know
@@giantsfan714Not if you're driving them properly. You just stop sooner.
Nearly all of these crashes were rentals, so probably people who didn't really know how to drive a truck and thought it was similar to a car. They learnt pretty quickly
@@giantsfan714well, there was something else that brought them to a stop
What I really want to see is footage of these people returning their rental trucks. "I swear it was like that when you rented it to me."
😅🤣😅😂😂
I'd like to see some in cab footage, where the driver's coffee and all his stuff gets launched into the ceiling and the looks on his face..lol
@@SlapthePissouttayew I'd like to see the one's who chose not to wear their seat belts and plastered themselves on the steering wheel and dash!
@@bobjohnson1587 That too...lol
Hohohehe! Or, I was just driving down the highway doing the speed limit and the roof blew off by itself in the wind! You people need better quality trucks. Hmmph.
The people who live there:
Hears a loud crash noise...
"oh! There goes another one!"
This came up in my feed today and I am feeling nostalgic and a little weepy.
I love how a bus makes it through and the truck behind is like yeah seems legit, then gets completely demolished
Biggest twist of the century. I thought for sure the bus was gonna be the one who hit the limit.
@@ledfloyd9035 same dude lmao
@@ledfloyd9035 my heart skipped a beat watching it live another day
I like how the "Overheight Must Turn" sign turns off right before the trucks get there, almost as if it's saying, "Why do I even bother?"
Or, "Shirley they saw the sign flashing and are turning their truck right now!"
@@billolsen4360 Nope... and don't call me shirley....
Paul Feist he wasn't talking to you and also it was in quotations
@@gray5315 *SWISH* went the joke, right over your head.... (it's from a movie...)
@@paulfeist even if no one knows where it came from, it is still the most quotable quote in human history. Need to be living under a rock to not get it. I'm just as surprised as you are there are some that don't get it.
Bridge Warning: "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN!"
Driver: "I thought they were just kidding."
Missed it by that much !!!!
The guy that turned the wrong way and then hit the bridge was probably having the worst day.
Lumber Jane 1:46 for those looking for it(?)
@@maybeja nah it's at 3:55
Lumber Jane ,was waiting for him to take a second run at it.
At least, HE didn't scalp his truck!! Unlike so many others...
@sour airhead However you can see that he tapped bridges before that too. So I guess he needs to learn to trust his first instincts more instead of trying it anyway
0:43 My very favorite of all. He even adds an aluminum curtain to close the show!
That guy saying "Hooollllyyyy Crap!" afterwards lol
I cried on that one🤣
Idk i think i like the cape they had at 1:30 better
@@anthonycope8637 Big Facts
😂 😂
Personally, 6 ought to be higher. What a clean cut!
My favorite part is what you DONT see.
The mass amount of signage before said bridge warning everyone with extreme amounts of caution.
After they hit they have to do “THE DRIVE OF SHAME” 😂
Also one of my favourite parts
It's a game God plays. I'm sorry God for saying that
@@ChicanoOne760 Don't worry, I'm sure he will continue to ignore you as he usually does when bad things happen in your life.
Not funny
@@Zackstrife29 oof but yeah
“What do you need sir?”
“Just a little off the top”
“Say no more”
Cop to trucker: "Are you stuck?"
Trucker to Cop:"No Officer, I'm hauling a bridge."
4:00 legend says that the prius is still sitting at the stop sign to this day
Ryder is doing great with impacts but Penske is going back at the bridge again! 😂
