@@kateclark7250 Just that opening shot of 7 seconds was an additional hour of driving as I went down to the ukee lighthouse and got super lucky as a huge fog cloud rolled in which blocks all the wind for 10 minutes which made it calm enough to get my drone up to get those shots. Normally its so windy out there my drone would never be able to fly at lighthouse loop. I came back a week later with some zoom lenses and my big boy camera, as 2 of my cameras were destroyed by saltwater, to get additional shots which will be in part 2 and 3.
I highly recommend doing a Lvl1 Paddle Canada kayaking course. It goes over the basics, sea navigation, and self/buddy rescue. Also tandem kayaks scare me as solo boats 😬Every kayak capcise (that they weren't able to recover) I've seen in IRL has involved one
I was on a guided kayak tour here 10 years ago, and this brings back memories of some of the most stunning scenery I've ever seen. I'm not huge on camping and sleeping outside anymore, but I would 100% do this again.
Living on Van Isle myself and exploring all this wilderness, watching your videos always inspires me. I am looking forward to the next episodes with baited breath. I've always wanted to explore the Broken Islands but heard so many stories and with my current inexperience paddling on the ocean, I've always given this a hard pass. Maybe on a tour someday? Thanks again David.
I'd say either get a taxi to drop you off at the Sechart lodge or at willis island and paddle with in the safety of dod / willis, turtle / calk / walsh island and you'd have an amazing time and be perfectly save as it is sheltered.
Fellas. You did a great job with photography and your honest acceptance of your errors. My first warning came when you said you had no experience sea kayaking... Broken Group is not the place to learn. Courses on basic kayaking and self rescue are advisable. I am glad you eventually figured out what your spray skirt was for but wonder why your front hatch leaked so badly. Glad you both didn't drown!
A lot went wrong but the front hatch is what did it. This summer i'll flood it and find the leak and fix it. Also I'd like to take some classes, there were none because of covid so ended up with the school of hard knocks.
Glad to see Gibraltar island What happens to Derry and Ruth s cabin ? Is it gone ? The outhouse is still there. When it’s 1970 my family used to visiting Derry and Ruth we had a cabin on chalk island next to Dodd s island. My family had a friend named Joe Sala lived solo on the turtle island. We had a wonderful memories of broken group . I have no idea if our cabin is still there. Outhouse too ?? Thanks for sharing it. I do missed . I can’t remember Derry and Ruth s last name. We lived in Port Alberni we often went there during summer times
@@IdRatherBeHiking I did a 7 day unsupported kayak trip down the coast of Baja to Loreto. The trip was in December and we had to be on the water early due to the winds coming from the north. When I was in the trough between 2 waves I couldn't see the others. The spray skirts worked wonderfully in keeping the water out of the cockpit.
This video took 37 hours to produce, a thumbs up would be appreciated!
37 hours? Oh wow David! But it is pretty awesome...

@@IdRatherBeHiking sorry to hear that you lost 2 cameras. 😒
I am sure it did. A very well done set of videos!!! Beautiful, informative and honest!

What a beautiful trip, well documented, with the fatal flaw of no skirt. Beautiful photography. So nice to have the included maps.

This was a wonderful adventure with beautiful filming and music. Thanks to you and you brother for taking me along!

Love experiencing this trip with you. Thank you for another great video!
Looks beautiful, my daughter did this trip with a friend a few years back…..
Paddling trips are the best! Minus the back pain haha. Another great video :)
for me it tightens my legs up real bad
Thanks for posting this video! I’ve been wanting to do this trip and this has been amazingly helpful!
Part 2 will go over everything we did wrong, don't make the same mistakes.

Great shots and good work on the video. I was there in 2017 and this brings back some wonderful memories. New Subscriber!
Awesome! Thank you!
Such an awesome video. I really love the way you do Kayaking. May God bless you.
Looks great! I was just on the Island a few weeks ago! Wish I could join you!

Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.
How insignificant we are. Quite the experience Moose-Man.😎
Wow, beautiful!
Can you fish on the outside of the rock fish protected area
I really enjoyed your video, thanks for uploading! Did you see any SUP paddlers out there? Cheers!
None what so ever, 3 canoes all the rest kayakers
Not using a spray skirt, how come?
because I'm an idiot, I had mostly only done lake kayaking and assumed they are for rain... big mistake

@@IdRatherBeHiking all the right kit and an expensive kayak... Salesman should've pushed a skirt purchase on you also .
This was awsome , its part 2 out yet?
haha almost
Giant log? Small piece of driftwood.
Great adventure. A reminder to many that things can turn against you very quickly. Good show. I like your political commentary too.
That area is unforgiving, my friend’s brother died kayaking there. No skirt, really!
I'm a pants kind of guy no skirts in my wardrobe
Oh the hat....Bahahahaha!!!!
Beautiful scenery but the music tells me there are problems to come..
God damn
I’ll try watching this but if you ruined it with music, I’m exiting out.
You sound like a spoiled brat.
