The reason there's so much tension between Maverick and Iceman is because Iceman went to flight school with Cougar and was a good friend of his, and Iceman considers Maverick to be a hotshot who landed in Cougar's rightful spot since Cougar would've been in Top Gun instead of Maverick if he hadn't quit.

I used to work on the flight deck onboard USS Nimitz. When an aircraft powers up to launch, there is a piece that rises up behind it called a Jet Blast Deflector, to make sure you don't "get incinerated" (although you're far more likely to be blown clear off deck and into the water below than to be incinerated). I used to wear that flight deck gear you were crushing on. Green shirt. Aviation Boatswains Mate: Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment (a.k.a. ABE). Particularly the Arresting Gear, which is the equipment that the wire the aircraft catches is attached to that actually stops the aircraft.
"Are they playing with their friends?" hehe... no.
"Is this Cold War era?" Yes. 1986 was still Cold War era, albeit late into it. The exact enemy in the movie is never specified, tho the red star suggests Eastern Bloc.
"Men shoud wear masks more often." Would probably improve my looks, lol.
Fighter pilots are the cockiest bastards you will ever meet. They're not necessarily jerks, but there is absolutely NO question about their confidence.
Yes, you HAVE to have that attitude to do the job they do.
"..in this branch of whatever the fuck they're in." Navy.
The volleyball scene was definitely made with you in mind, lol.
"Why is he bloody?" That was him hitting the ejected canopy. The problem with flying through the other plane's jet wash is a real issue that F-14A had, causing the engines to stall out. The engines were changed in the F-14B and F-14D.
Literally every movie about combat flight training has that scene where a pilot has to deal with the death of a comrade. Usually about how they need to get past it. Quickly. It's not fair, but war isn't a fair business.
Aircraft carriers don't really have windows, other than the tower which has the Ship's Bridge, Admiral's Bridge and Primary Flight Control. Although our sleeping area (called a "berthing") had two windows (called portholes) which were at the bow (the most forward part) of the ship, just below the flight deck. I watched one of the last flight's of the A-6 Intruder catapult off deck from there. They do, however, have air conditioning so the sweat was likely for effect. Or it could've just been the South Pacific during the summer, because, damn...
As a former head gear guy on the Flight Deck, thanks for the appreciation.
    "That part." Yeah, the missile.
Catapults broken, can't launch for ten minutes. Typical.
"They're buggin' out!" means the remaining MiGs were disengaged and retreating. Or to simply it, "Fuck this, we're out."
"Isn't 'Maverick' such a bad ass name!" Yeah, that's probably why he wouldn't have it. Most callsigns are given based on something embarrassing you did. Example: a pilot who's callsign is 'Skidmarks'.
That scene at the end with everyone on deck celebrating. Yeah, wouldn't have happened. We don't know what you did up there (unless it was directly overhead) and, we don't care. We got more planes to launch, more planes to land. Move, bitches. lol.
Part of that "chemistry" might come from the fact that during the filming, Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer legit didn't like each other. Tho I believe they've since become friendly.

How well does this movie portray personalities, training and maneuvers? Well, its movie. All of the personalities are ones you'll encounter in an operational squadron, but they're turned up to 11. Training is intense and can be very dangerous, so they hit that more-or-less on the head, but the maneuvers are mostly just aerobatics choreographed to look good on camera. The second movie, Top Gun: Maverick, gives you a much better look at the kind of things Navy pilots get up to in the air.

An F-14A wouldn't be able to get going that fast that quickly after takeoff when loaded with fuel and armourment. Probably almost fall out of the sky trying to barrel roll that soon after too. On a technical note: The F-14A, which is what was used in 1985 or so, had issues with the engines in which compressor stalls were common in hard maneuvers. These could also be caused by almost any errant airflow into the engines, which is why Ice's jet wash, which can be very strong turbulence (look at crowded airports and big-bodied airliners) caused the flame outs. This was given a partial remedy with some helper systems in the A-model, but a few years later the -14B was given new, more powerful engines that virtually eliminated this problem.

I was in high school when this came out, and this was the biggest box office hit that year. And "Take My Breath Away" won the Oscar for Best Song.
You asked about what happened about Navy enlistment after this came out. Oh, hell yeah! It went up by something like 500%. Every guy wanted to be Tom Cruise and fly the F-14. Ironically, the F-14 is no longer in service.
Yeah, this movie could be seen as a thirst trap...Quentin Tarantino had a theory about Maverick and Iceman that was both funny, and oddly compelling.
The biggest heartbreak about this movie in the time that has passed is the health problems that Val Kilmer (Iceman) has been dealing with. However, he does come back for the sequel.

Unfortunately when they got the two actors together for the reshoot both were busy filming other projects. Their hair color and styles were completely different so they shot the scene in minimal lighting so as not to divulge their different hair styles. In the end it sorta worked out for the better.🤓

Also yes Pilots are actually this obnoxious in a high school jock kind of way. But they usually make up for it by being alot of fun to be around.
Yes they're actually this platonically gay for each other.
When iceman flew in front of Maverick the jet exhaust went in mavericks engines depriving them of oxygen and turning them off. And when Goose pulled the handle to eject his seat shot out before the canopy was fully off breaking his neck on the glass. Something old F-14s were notorious for.
Yes Navy ships have AC and they did back then, the Indian Ocean is just stupid hot all the time and sweaty men look hotter.
No Navy ships don't have windows so they can keep all the AC in and the bombs out.
And as a "headgear guy" thanks!

it was a known problem of the F14s, when you got caught in another plane's jetwash the engines of the F14 would often shut down bcoz it had weak engines, it was mostly solved with the next version of the plane when they put in more powerful engines.

In my experience, which is nearly 5 decades on the planet, small, rural towns usually have the best fast food, diners and ma & pa restaurants when compared to suburbia and big cities. People take more pride in small towns and the food is definitely a reflection of that. You also find a lot of small places that are not franchises that specialize in certain foods and those are always a great find.
But go ahead and keep thinking your way.

There is a great "making of" video on this film, and netflix has a "movies that made us" that covers it as well, I think. The external air combat shots were a mix of stock footage of weapons firing and large models rigged with pyros and dropped from a crane. One of the models used in the "Hollywood" damage frames from the end sequence was hanging on the wall of the Mythbusters M5 shop for a long time.

5:13 of all the reactions I’ve seen, no one has ever commented on the aesthetic appeal of the fighter jets… Top Gun features THE most aesthetically pleasing jet of them all - the F-14 Tomcat. I liken her to a ballerina that ate too many hotdogs - she’s beautiful, agile and graceful despite her size. She can also be mean if you aren’t nice to her. The F-14 was known to be as dangerous to its own crew as it was to any enemy it encountered… this danger is addressed later on.
10:23 “are we gonna disobey orders?” You could say he’s a bit of a… Maverick 😎
12:21 😂 this has been a fun reaction already and we’re not even at the best parts yet
13:49 “I like Goose” 😬 we all do, making events later feel like the most devastating gut-punch.
17:38 I’ve seen this probably over 1000 times, but I never realised until someone else pointed it out, Maverick puts on his glasses, Goose takes his off - go back to them singing and you’ll see Mav didn’t have glasses on, but Goose did - he’s taking his off to avoid recognition.
    27:48 😏
41:44 “why‘s he bloody?” Science - the ‘A’ model of F-14s were notorious for engine stalls, which sometimes caused flat spins. That’s a problem itself, but it creates a new one - zero pressure over the top surface of the plane as it has no forward momentum. During ejection, that zero pressure causes the canopy to hover over the cockpit instead of flying clear, so as Goose ejects, the canopy is obstructing his path. His head smashed into the canopy at an extreme velocity, causing one or more of a fractured skull, broken neck and spinal compression (officially his cause of death is a broken neck).
43:51 when Carole says “he’d have flown anyway”, she’s telling Mav that Goose was always going to do that job (RIO - Radar Intercept Officer), the risk was there no matter who he flew with, and that Mav shouldn’t beat himself up over it.
The mission scene, the tally is 6 MiGs, 4 shot down, 2 “bugging out”. Iceman’s engine taking damage, he shuts it down to avoid potential fire spread, and starts it up again once safe to do so (the F-14 would potentially flat spin if only one engine is on).
    Top Gun trivia:
The opening scene was filmed on the deck of USS Enterprise, the shot was backlit by the sunrise… you mentioned the lighting, it was indeed a choice by director Tony Scott… Enterprise was on operational duty and was following a charted course, that course caused them to gradually lose the backlighting, Tony Scott requested the ship turn to keep the sunrise in the shot. When the ship’s commander told him it would cost $25k to do that, Tony Scott pulled out his personal chequebook and wrote one out on the spot. In a later interview he claimed that he made sure the cheque bounced 😂
The flat spin scene led to an onscreen death, but it was also tragic off screen. Art Scholl, an aerial stunt cameraman, lost control of his camera plane and it plunged into the Pacific Ocean. Neither the plane nor his body were ever recovered. At the end of the credits is a message that reads “dedicated to the memory of Art Scholl”.
The scene at the end when Charlie returns to see Maverick - Tom Cruise is 5ft 7in, Kelly McGillis is 5ft 10in. To lower her height, a trench was dug into the the floor for her to stand in.
Top Gun is highly lauded for its soundtrack. Lead singles “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin, and “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins were both written for this film. Kenny Loggins originally only wrote “Playing a with The Boys” (the volleyball scene), and Toto were originally chosen for “Danger Zone”, but due to a dispute Toto pulled out and Loggins was approached to finish the song. Judas Priest were also approached to use their song “Reckless”, but it didn’t happen… as a Judas Priest fan I will say, “Reckless” is a damn good song and would have fit just right for Top Gun.
You should definitely watch Top Gun: Maverick now, it’s even better than this one… and that’s coming from someone who has listed Top Gun as my favourite film of all for over 30 years… I saw TG: Maverick in cinema and I was blown away! I ended up watching it in cinema 6 times, and have watched it a few more times since it came out on streaming.

Tori, it's great to see you doing movie & show reactions again! Your style is a joy.
To answer a couple of your questions:
    - no idea if anyone got roasted by engine afterburners, but there is a pretty good clip of a guy getting sucked into an engine on a flight deck. Am sure UA-cam has it.
    - yes, this is a pretty accurate depiction of what Top Gun and other military tactics schools teach.... how to work together, to use the advantages of your plane and compensate for areas where the enemy has the advantage, and how to "know before you know" in a situation where seconds mean the fight is over.
    - in the accident, Iceman's plane crossed in front of Maverick's and the "wash" of air coming off of it disrupted the air flowing into Maverick's engines, causing them to stall, and then the flat spin took away any chance to restart them and get control of the plane. The canopy blew off and went straight up, and unfortunately, so do the ejection seats. These were both real-world issues that early F-14 Tomcats had.
    - "I'll fly with you." is pretty much the highest compliment an aviator can get, and means even more coming from an alpha dog like Viper.
    - most of the Navy's ships in those days were built to fight in the North Atlantic, so they didn't have air conditioning. They are also in the Indian Ocean for the "deployed" scenes aboard the carrier, so yes... they sweat.
    - the "shootdowns" were miniatures. The rest are real-life planes in flight, except for some of the cockpit scenes.
YES. You MUST watch Top Gun: Maverick. We MUST see your reaction to it. That is all.

Luckily, he was able to get behind the blast barrier and said it felt like he had just stepped in the front door to hell.

The only thing that saved him was the cranial helmet that he was wearing, he survived with injuries the engine took significant turbine blade damage from the helmet being ingested which caused the engine to have significant foreign object damage and shut down. To answer your questions - a lot in this film aviation wise is pretty accurate (it's cool they actually got to film F-14s flying). A lot of the lingo is correct for military flying, there are a couple things that seem a little off tho. For me - it's how low they fly! The US don't like to risk training/operating so close to the ground (makes sense considering how damn expensive the jets are lol). The dogfighting and stuff isn't actually as inaccurate as you might expect it to be - it's a little overdramatisized but honestly it isn't too crazy, they did a lot of good in this movie :)

Mav pushing the envelope in the thin air, flying against a ghost as Goos had said, I never realized it, it's beyond survivor guilt.. he IS searching for a connection with his father when he puts himself in perilous situations. When Maverick repeats the line Talk to me Goos before he takes off on his Darkstar flight in MAVERICK, it confirms this. However, they are for the Captain's cabin and the people that need to see out (people watching the flight deck...think a control tower at an airport). I know what's so sexy about the intro scene, it's all those sexy F14A's getting yeeted off of a steam powered catapult. And btw, the only fake planes were the ones getting destroyed, all of the other planes were real. And since the US was still in the Cold War in 1986, they couldn't get their hands on actual MiGs, so they dressed up old American F5's and called them MiG 28s, which aren't real

  • @JonEl616

All of the flight shots and footage on the aircraft carrier (which is usually air conditioned, the sweat was an artistic choice for tension) were genuine with cooperation with the US Navy, the only time they were models were when the jets were damaged or destroyed. Even the missile shots were real. When this movie came out, enlistment and application skyrocketed to the point recruiters were there at the theater.
The flat spin was the result of a single engine stall and loss of control, these kinds of things happened with these F-14s and refits were done later to improve their performance. It’s relatable to a race car driver suddenly losing control of their car, these accidents happen.
Top Gun is one of my favorite films and I’m always glad to see people’s first reaction to it. One of the most entertaining and funniest reactions I’ve seen to date. Got yourself a new subscriber! Can’t wait for you to see Top Gun: Maverick!

“Jet Wash” which caused the flat spin that killed Goose is caused when a turbine powered jet engine passes through the exhaust of another jet. Since the exhaust has little to no air in it, it causes the jet engine to stall or “flame out”. The flat spin was common in the A-Model F-14’s due to compressor issues in the early engines, and because the engines in F-14’s aren’t perfectly parallel under the airframe. They are actually slightly canted outward, so when an engine suddenly stalls, it can quickly cause unstoppable and uncorrectable yaw which can cause a flat spin.
