  • Endurance, knowledge, creativity, timing, dexterity are just a few skills we get from studying a bit of metal.
I am not the world's biggest metal head but I do like most of it. It's especially fun and challenging to learn a few aspects of the genre. I can read transcriptions of about any metal song but as far as executing it perfectly and memorizing it I usually fall short.
Let's at least start out by knowing a few notes, power chords, a blues scale and a couple of simple riffs. Thinking about timing from the get go is sure to save a lot of trouble in the future.
I'm a guitar teacher in Cedar Rapids, IA and have been teaching since the 70's. I make videos to show examples I'd like my students to work on or share things that have been helpful to students. Please subscribe, like, comment and share. Always glad to know what you think.

To your point, Brook, playing music has brought people into my life who will always be life-long friends. And I'm really excited about your Stones trobute band and looking forward to hearing about it. Maybe a Stones guitar lesson?

COOL! I've been doing a few scuzzy demos on the channel. I am drilling the rhythm parts endlessly so I have the structure of the tunes perfect then I can lead the band without falling apart!

I think "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" is one of the greatest rock and roll songs ever written (on one the greatest albums ever). Keith's riffage for the first part of the song, then Mick Taylor's solo at the end, all just brilliant. I've been working on both of those for years now. Will your tribute band do that tune?

We are just doing songs the singer is choosing and trying not to force anything on him until he suggests it. He is aware of that tune but has not brought it up yet. I sure like it too!

Brook, do you have a recommendation for a drum machine for a beginner?

I seem to have good luck with Zoom brand RT123 units. Pretty bare bones but I don't want to fiddle or fuss about. Maybe I should do a demo on the beats just for thrills. A listening party. I used to program beats on drum machines but that is pretty silly these days I suppose.
