  • In this video I show you the proper use of a long-line to prevent a dog from breaking a "stay" command. I use a tug toy to increase the drive in the dog and increases the chance that he may break the stay.
Preventing the dog from failing at an exercise is the best way to teach him success. Furthermore, the correction in this exercise is not delivered by the person, but rather something the dog feels he brought onto himself.

adding a set up helps the dog to understand the potential for consequence in a controlled situation. the more realistic the training, the more likely it will work when needed.

    So much to learn.
I failed to teach the release signal - bad owner.
Have to go right back to the beginning and learn sit AND release signal.
Hope the dog is able to understand it's my fault not his!

I doubt dogs have any concept of blame or fault the way humans do. Dogs don't feel guilty. 😁

Hey Robert!! I see when Goofy did break and you said no you said there was no punishment because he corrected himself. So, the punishment was not when he was snatched back by the line? If not what would the punishment had been if he had not corrected himself?

There is no punishment, only correction.

This is phenomenal. I am trying to keep all your videos in mind. We are getting a shih poo and while a lot smaller of a dog, he will definitely require training.

I bought a long training line for my 5 month Belgian beige Tervuren but he spends most of the time carrying it or chewing it! So I spend most of the time telling him to ‘leave it’ ! I then out of frustration take the lead off, thinking it would be better to train him without the distraction of the long lead but then he just runs away! Any suggestions! Pulling my hair out!

Hey Robert ! Awesome training, my 5 month old golden is doing great with all your tips. Just wondering can I use a ball instead of a tug toy when releasing/rewarding. Seeing his ball is a higher prey drive for him. Or is that setting him up for failure for his retrieving and coming back to me?
    Thanks
