- The Not-So-Glamourous side of life as a Professional Mermaid - What do professional mermaids do? Professional mermaids do a lot more than sitting still and looking pretty... so, let's talk about it! In this video, we'll talk about the dangers of being a professional mermaid, the pain and discomfort involved with being a professional mermaid and all of the other odd details that go on behind the scenes for mermaid work. Being a mermaid sure is fun, but it certainly isn't easy.
If you are interested in becoming a mermaid performer (or merman performer) please don't let this video discourage you from doing so. All jobs have their pros and cons- mermaiding isn't an exception! And if you are someone who is hiring a merperformer (or looking to hire one), I hope this video will give you some insight as to why our prices are sometimes pretty high. 😅

At the Pirate Fest I had my silicone tail on for so long I was getting a ridiculous amount of pain on the back of my ankle on one side. I was at the beach. I made the quick decision to wiggle that one foot out of the pocket & just not swim anymore, just sit around. Let me tell you, immediate relief.
Also something no one thinks of, transporting your silicone tails. People are shocked when I tell them I have a huge hard suitcase to move my tails.
Well, I appreciate all the hard work and sacrifice that you put into being a mermaid. You’ve touched a lot of people and you’ve added a lot of Beauty to this world through your mermaid phantom character, as well as just being a genuinely good person yourself. ☺️ but I do appreciate the hard work and for letting us be a part of your journey 🧜🏻♀️

I love your videos. :) I was thinking about wiggling my way into a professional zone with my mermaiding. It's been my relaxation/get away from work thing but honestly, I want to get away from the mind numbing mundane job I already have. My current job is stealing away my health and my youth and it doesn't feel worth it. I rather sacrifice myself for something magical and creative than just keep doing the same thing every day wishing I was some where else.

This is really informative, phantom! I’ve wondered a lot of these things, but never heard the truth. How long can you keep your tail on? Are rashes or skin conditions an issue with wearing silicone?

What a great video. Even with all the not so pretty aspects you worded everything so well without sounding ungrateful or angry at your career. It's obvious you love what you do when you take the good and take the bad and can smile at the end of the day.
I hoop dance and dumpster dive, both can be brutal on the body, I've had bruises all over making me look like I lost a fight.
As with you and water, i can certainly relate to situations while dumpster diving. You learn pretty fast what you're looking for. Especially with covid, cold and flu season you don't want to open bags loaded with used Kleenex 🤣 people see the haul vidoes and think WOW free stuff it's an entire process to properly clean and sanitize everything.

*for the calf cramps, i don't know how much wiggle room you have at the bottom of the fin, but of you are able to point your toes upward but towards you, it releases the cramp in seconds. Best way i can visually describe would be if you wake up w one and you are on your back flex you foot up towards the ceiling and hold it. 😘
Show some exercise mermaids/mermen can do to help the pains to not be as worse. Or to prepare for the life of a mermaid.

I honestly had no idea there was so much that went into being a professional mermaid. I knew that you have to have a strong core coz swimming like that takes some work, especially with a heavy tail, but I was unaware of all the pains and other stuff. I'd like to be a mermaid, but probably just for fun lol

I know it's not easy swimming in the cold cold cold winter snow it must be awful fir you you take on a lot as a mermaid and by the way the color of your hair is beautiful so enchanting

Now personally, I really hate how mermaids can just magically get legs.
A wheelchair would serve well enough.
And I have seen mermaids being able to semi crawl over land, too. ^^
ah man my first time in my mermaid tail skin I was at a natural body of water with a waterfall and I got SO SICK it was E. Coli, but i'll press on!
I love your chanel. For me the scariest part is praying I don't get bit by a jelly fish or shark. 😮. Something else thats kinda hard for me is when I go to the ocean with my tail it literally takes a couple cleanings till I get all the sand out not to mention theres so much sand on me after I've shower like 3 times a day I still can't get all the sand out hheeee 😂. And last but not least...I love people and kids and if they're cool with me I am cool with them I am very sweet and outgoing and I have no problem letting people take my photo if they ask ....but its so terrible when people in the public (not at shows) but when I'm swimming privately at the beach people that are lookie lou and try to take our photos without asking its kinda awkward. But all in all I absolutely adore being a mermaid and I wouldn't have it any other way its the best life ever.

I know that being a professionl mer is not easy, in addition to the pain in the calves, you also have to pay for supplies, etc even with all of that I still have a goal of being a professional merman which I'm a merman BTW.
It certainly has its rough sides, but that should not keep you from pursuing it if you're interested in becoming a professional mer. :) Best of luck to you!

You're not late at all. :)
I'd imagine it would be a different sort of pain. I do MMA workouts, so muscle soreness is nothing new. But at the start of each mermaid season, I experience a whole different type of soreness due to the different muscles used. So I would still expect to be sore at first, but perhaps in areas different from those that may bother you from dancing. :)

Most of the back pain comes from arching your back (via propping yourself up with straightened arms while on yoir belly) while lifting a heavy tail over your head repeatedly for photos. In my experience, at least 😅 It gets tiring after an hour or so! But hopefully you'll be okay 😊

That's true! But no, dry land events (at least in a silicone tail) are not very comfortable at all. 😬
