My central AC has a leak. I called the local HVAC guy. He came over and told me I have a leak but instead of attempting finding the leak he offered to replace the WHOLE system from condenser to the ducts without even looking at my ducts. Hard to find an honest HVAC person !!
SAME HERE. HE DIDN'T WANT TO CHECK THE SOURCE OF THE LEAK AND WANTED TO REPLACE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE COILS. THAT WOULDN'T HAVE RESOLVED THE PROBLEM IF IT WAS LEAKING AT THE VALVE. UNREAL!!
Excellent, Thank you so much, live in the North Carolina area and had my AC refilled last year and leaked out, the man said I need to buy a new system for 6000 dollars. I am unsure if I need one but I will be checking my shrader valve today, Thank you, Robert
Hey Steve %100 correct. If I go on a job I’m checking everything starting with the smallest of the possible issues. I would expect same workmanship if someone was working at my house.
I just checked my valve after watching this video...it was leaking...I have someone coming out tomorrow to check it out...thank you so much for posting this video.
May 19 2020, I just paid $ 570 for leaking test and refrigerant refill, the technician will come back in 2 weeks, to check again if everything is working properly and refrigerant level stays at normal level. It looks so simple job to do, but I need to buy tools and refrigerant to perform the job, plus I do not know to much about A/C units, so I have to pay the price, thanks it is a very instructional video, great job.
Hey Sam, I have the same AC unit 2002 vintage King and schader valves leaked. These are the high temp and pressure side, makes sense. Thank for saving me alot of money.
Thank you. Finally we have an honest tech like you. I live in New Jersey and had low 410A problem for two AC systems. I asked two different AC companies to check, and the first recommendation is to change the system for $7000 each.
Not only will the brass cap protect the valve better, but if the valve does leak, which is usually a slow leak, the brass cap will prevent the leak while it is on. Honestly, 90% of the time, the brass cap alone would be enough, but doing things the Right Way™ to do things.
A quick fix if you don't have the removal tool is to buy some brass caps with o'rings inside them...not too expensive. Put them on tight and it will seal it off pretty much the same as the valve core does.
I liked what you did after you replaced the schrader. You left the replacement tool on, opened the valve and removed the end of the tool in essence checking for a major leak before you pull the tool off. I hav e had a lot of people discount the schrader as the cause of a low system. Another thing to do is listen when you remove the schrader cap. If you get that psst, definitely check the schrader.
Better yet just tighten the Schrader cap like you're supposed to or the large nut on top of the suction service valve and then you won't have any leaks at all you are supposed to tighten those two covers. If you don't like the covers that you have then use the ones that train makes you tighten it with a 9/16 wrench it's solid brass it's very tight and it does not leak.
@@6barry66 why cover up a leaking schrader by tightening the cap over tight? The plastic caps won't always hold and the brass ones if you over tighten them you can deform the seats and when you do finally decide to change the schrader you can't get them out. I spent 17 years doing hydraulics and found over tightening the JIC fitting would make them leak. That is why Parker Hanifin came up with the FFFT method of tightening their fittings. FFFT stands for flats from finger tight. When we started using that system our leaks dropped dramatically.
@@marvinostman522 I think what you're trying to do is find a way to charge your customer another $300 the fact is the cap was made to be tightened not so tight that you destroy the threads but you should have no problem putting the flare nut that train makes on an air conditioner that has a really minor leak and tightening it or you could just use the change the pin valve on the Fly tool and you can just put a new pin in there. And this does not cost $500. I work with people everyday who find creative ways to gain the approval of their employer and padding bills and adding tasks that serve no purpose just so they can get commissions. And I know you know what I'm talking about because virtually every news outlet CBS NBC Dateline they've all run scams and they've all shown people what we do and right now we are in Industry under the microscope just do your job it does not cost $500 to clean someone's condenser it does not cost $500 to get rid of algae on an evaporator tray these are just cons to get extra money out of people and it makes all of us look bad. thank you so much. that is exactly what people have been doing. I have been told so so many things , but no one has ever done this leak test. i have my line running through a concrete wall that holds up my deck. that is how the house was when I purchased. im praying leak is NOT inside line behind brick wall. refrigerant is totally depleted, just had refrigerant put in a few months ago and it is depleted. did not run unit over summer at all. im hoping this piece is the problem.
trying to get warranty to pay for new line or to find and repair leak. if leak in line that runs through concrete wall is main challenge. believe replacing line will be best.

Fantastic work. I have an old unit and it's suddenly stopped cooling. I asked a tech to checkout unit and he said it was too old and added freon and told me to cross my fingers that the system would work. He charged me 100 bucks to add 2 pounds of freon and my compressor worked fine and the house started to cool. A week later the ac stopped cooling. I texted the guy and he only replied " that's really bad" . I remember that he didn't check for leaks. I asked how did my unit loose the freon. He simply said that it evaporated. In my mind that meant a leak, but he didn't bother checking any of that. He only said my unit is old and I need a new unit. I am sure the freon is all gone, but, can I still see bobbles on a leaking area?
Take kids bubbles…I just poured a little bit over the valves and the lines and watched….3 areas bubbles right up …so I took a picture of it to show the tech the next day
Not too tight or you will deform the port and the shrader core wont come out. Just make sure the brass cap has a good seal i side and just snug it up a bit but don’t use a wrench!
Yes very informative!! I have a straighter vale in front and rear Weather King 2 1/2 ton think it developed a slight leak in the rear to close to house can't get a good luck but unit ran all day got up to 78F now cooler outside went down to 77F dripping water outside condenser line? is cooler now. Can I burn out compressor if it's low on freon ??? Please let me know ASAP
Sure some leaks come from Schrader valves Carrier/bpd had leak in ecoils.. But what I always looked at were clogged filters causing the appearance of low charge. Running unit and clogging ecoils.
You picked a condenser to replace the shrader value that is real easy, but most units you can't use that tool. So you will have to do a pump down to replace it.
Hi Sam, Where did you get the fluorescent detergent solution that you used to diagnose the leak location. I know I can try dilute dish soap solution but as you mention that fluorescent solution would be easier to see if there are small leaks or not.

Thanks for taking the time to provide this information.
Well done instruction and camera work!
This is a great video with excellent photography. (How could anyone down vote this?) Thanks!
Use a brass cap and make sure its tight
Not too tight or you will deform the port and the shrader core wont come out. Just make sure the brass cap has a good seal i side and just snug it up a bit but don’t use a wrench!
Keanu Reeves does hella good HVAC videos
Thank you so much. Great video and found the problem easy. Thanks again.
Thank you soooo much!! This saved me 7k replacing my whole system! I replaced these valves instead, now it works perfectly!
Lol what
You are very good at explaining , thank you so much.
Very good information. So far the best. Thanks!
That tool is sweet! Gotta get me one!
Sam this tutorial was very informative. I am going to buy that tool and replace the valve. thank you very much.
This was real interesting. Going to try this out. Thanks bro!

Good explanation. The best that I have seen
Hey You are correct inexperienced techs. Then the person taking the call just says system it’s functioning.
Sure some leaks come from Schrader valves Carrier/bpd had leak in ecoils.. But what I always looked at were clogged filters causing the appearance of low charge. Running unit and clogging ecoils.
The best one I’ve seen so far! Keep it up man! Do you have a complete steps for AC tune up?
There is no such thing as an ac tune-up. However, there is such a thing as an ac system inspection.
When they say tuneup. They just change the filter.
They may also check system pressures and clean the indoor and outdoor (condenser) coils.
Always check king valve caps for tightness first then ports.
Thanks for the very elaborate explanation and solution.
Great video. I am going to check my valves now.
You're a good teacher; some A/C guys drive me crazy with talk and hand jesters.
Bravo my brother, very well executed.....👍
You need to add an Amazon link to that removal kit. Become an Amazon affiliate and make some revenue. Great vid. Hopefully this works for my unit
You picked a condenser to replace the shrader value that is real easy, but most units you can't use that tool. So you will have to do a pump down to replace it.
I do have a video on my channel showing how to do the latter. Thank you for the added insight! 🙂
first time seeing that tool though ,great video
Great Video, thank you
Well done! Thanks and God bless!
If that valve is leaking, would putting a good brass cap on it also stop the leak? Great video!
Sam, great video! Where can you buy the new end caps with rubber seal at?
Add a little bit of nylog blue to that new cap too.
Just use dishing washing liquid soap and sponge.
Thank you. Very helpful video.
Hi Sam, Where did you get the fluorescent detergent solution that you used to diagnose the leak location. I know I can try dilute dish soap solution but as you mention that fluorescent solution would be easier to see if there are small leaks or not.
Thanks for the vid. Super informative. One question how to tell what size or style shrader valve to get
They are universal. You can go to any local supply house and buy a pack of them for a few dollars
