    Not sure if it was the Brits or the Germans, but this piece of high ground was given the nickname the "Crown of Thorns".
    It was part of Monty's strategy of 'writing off' (aka attriting) the German Pz Divs in the North end of the beachhead thus allowing the US to build up to Cobra. It sort of worked, the US didn't have to deal with Tiger I or Tiger II (both of which were in Normandy) until later in the war and allowed the US forces to prick the bubble in the South part of the beachhead which eventually led to the out manoeuvring of the German divs.
