Chris Evert d. Steffi Graf - 1986 Lipton International finals

  • Considered at the time to be a blisteringly hard hititing match, Chrissie and Steffi exchange some dynamite winners in the finals of the Lipton International finals of 1986, a 2-week event only 1 tier down from the majors, and an event in which Chris never failed to at least reach the finals.
    She hands Steffi a convincing defeat, but it's still a changing of the guard in that Steffi is beginning to reach her period of destiny and Chris at 31 is entering what she would later call "a new phase of her career...it's called end of career." Still, she had one last grand slam victory left in her, as she took the French title a few months later, and one other Slam final appearance at the '88 Australian Open.
    *commentators are Arthur Ashe & Pam Shriver.
    (Edit commentary) : Regarding the discussion of years at #1 of these all time Greats... This is a fair observation that there are variant views on the topic. In 1978, though the computer put Navratilova at #1, the formulas used for calculating tournament & h2h value was still quite primitive, and by modern computer equations, Evert surely would have been #1. Indeed, in consideration of the times, in the pre-1980 years, Tennis Historians & Media still elected who was #1 - as expert observational insight was still valued - & Chris did earn that distinction. She did so by matching Navratilova's slam count (both played 2, winning 1 each - though only Evert made the finals of both) and beating Navratilova at the Colgate Series final (The WTA's sponsor, as Virginia Slims Championships had been before & after) - which was considered a 5th major at the time... and thereby holding a 3-2 edge over Martina in the h2h, as well as an enviable 56-3 record. Both Martina's wins over Chris were 7-5 & 9-7 in the 3rd set. This is a factor that matters to rankings today but was not considered then. So it's amorphous territory, and not as cut & dry as it would be deemed today. Many serious tennis historians consider Evert to have been ranked #1 a full Seven Years, and those who don't are generally open to the discussion. There are arguments for fewer than 7. But just as remarkable, Evert was never outside the Top 2 for 13 straight years. This will not likely be matched. Nor should it be ignored that the person she was #2 to was a fellow all-time great in her prime years, (ie, before Navratilova was 30 years old) which says a lot for how many years of comparable #1 were in her.

    That is a reference to her years at #1 when she was 'Queen of the Courts'... These videos are part of Chrissie's official social media platform, along with facebook & twitter... and I am one of her her staff members. The videos aren't made to feature other players... our job is featuring the play of Chris, and sharing with HER fans. Not sure why that is causing a ruckus. Other players are free to be good to their fans by posting videos too. :) Obviously, it's generally well received.

    Chrissie's prime years are 1974-1982. By 1984, she was 29, the age that Graf retired from tennis. While she physically improved in the latter portion of her career, mental focus peaks at ages 19-27 when the only thing you have on your mind is winning. And Evert's game especially was built around mental -not physical- strengths. To have the Highest Winning Percentage in History, covering 20 full YEARS (start of '70 thru '89) of results, puts her in the Top Echelon of any tennis conversation.

      I have to disagree with you partly since Chris herself says 1985 was probably her best ever year of tennis. She actually had to get better than she was previously to start beating Martina again in late 84-86, as her previous game was not good enough once Martina went into super-turbo mode.

      It is hard to say. I think 85-86 and maybe even into 87 a bit was her physical and technical peak. Her mental peak was in the 70s. Maybe her best combination of the two was late 80-82 so maybe that was her truest peak of all.

    this is a hard-hitting match REGARDLESS of when it took place. these were two of the hardest hitters (and most accurate) to ever play the game. chris always could hit hard off the ground and the graphite raquets definitely helped emphasize that. the williams sisters wouldn't be able to do crap with wooden raquets.

      @Max E Oops, Its my fault. I was reading and responding to two different notifications on two different Evert videos. The other one involved the 1987 wimbledon semifinal v Martina speculating about how she might have done had she won, and met Graf. I got them confused and posted something that makes no sense here. Your point here is obviously correct. Evert's volley was not a key component in these Graf -Evert matches. She was too busy scampering and defending against that huge forehand and serve to get up there. I will delete the above post. I apologize for the confusion.

    I Grew up in a tough neighborhood in Brooklyn, we were poor, but we had the Boys Club who had a guy come and teach us tennis. This is around 1976 and we were all 13 and 14 years old. We were terrible at first, then after maybe 3 months we got better, and the next thing we knew, we were going around playing the PAL and some amateur things in places we never went before, and winning.
    I was a baseball player, so I ended up going to Cal in California, my buddies all stuck with it, and went on to play college tennis and were able to go to school on tennis scholarships. But, in baseball I kept the tennis foot work
    Coach Brown always told us to look at Chris Everet because her baseline game and two hand back hand were the best he had ever seen.
    We all become huge Everett fans.
    And we all keep the back hand. We all graduated college and become tennis geeks all because of this lady. We were some poor black kids who looked at the elegance on and off the court. It took it on to college, to business.
    You never know who can change your life.
    So many of our friends got killed, ended up in jail, but we were at the Boys Club playing tennis, trying to get that backhand. We never won Wimbledon, but, all 7 of us college graduates with great lives, wives children grandchildren. You will never know what your presence did for 7 black kids from Bedford Stuyvesant in the 1970's THANK YOU FOR JUST BEING CHRIS EVERET

    Chris managed to raise the level of her game in those last 3 years 86-89, even though the wins became harder to come by. It's just everyone else got so much better. I think she's a more complete player here than when she was #1 for sure. She did lose some of her patience in long clay rallies, but overall her game was a better.

    • @Belgarath777
      @Belgarath777 Рік тому +3

      Her game might have been better due to coming forward more and hitting harder, but she wasn't as consistently strong mentally and made way more errors against lesser opponents and it wasn't helped by her knee injury which kept her out for more than 5 months, but when she was on, she was a better player.

    Why are you all so argumentative? I am beginning to think you dont come to the pages to see tennis but to formulate ways to find a reason to argue. My comment about Evert's winning percentage was an OPEN ERA comment, with statistics verified by the WTA, Evert played as early as 1970, but you'll find her statistics & titles won, etc, are officially noted by the WTA...which yes, did not exist in 1970. But it exists today.

    I know these things. Graf had the most powerful forehand in the women's game. Martina was the fastest in the women's game and had the best serve. Chris had the best return of serve, the best lob, the best drop shot, and the best backhand. BJK had the best volley. And the most consistently great player was Chris Evert. Take your pick.

      I would say Martina had the best volley and overheads.

    • @MARKBPHARM
      @MARKBPHARM 8 років тому +1

      BJK had the best volleys when she had to stoop for them, especially on the low forehand volley. Martina had the best volleys when she played them above the height of the net. Both had marvellous backhand volleys (as did Evonne Goolagong-Cawley) and overheads. BJK had slightly the better reflexes when the ball was drilled at her. Martina was slightly better volleying on the stretch - as was Margaret Court. The biggest difference between Martina and BJK was that Martina had an excellent forehand ground stroke, whilst Billie's was a less assured and less effective shot. I also think Martina learned to be pretty patient (probably from playing Chris Evert so often) - something BJK was not so good at. Interesting that BJK had a somewhat better record against Martina than she did against Chris.

    • @BTURNER1961
      @BTURNER1961 7 років тому +1

There has never been any attempt to prove she was better than anyone.. Her tennis always does the talking. People evaluate however they do. And I was not retracting the Fed/Nadal point because results of certain match ups in tennis have to do with how games mesh, not necessarily who's a better tennis player. Otherwise K Jordan would not have beaten Evert 3x.

    Yes definitely these two are in the top FIVE for greatest singles players ever. Along with Serena Williams, Monica Seles, Martina Navratilova. Goodness Evert v Graf at both their peaks. Evert. Evert would razor like focus on Graf backhand but be smart enough to lure Graf into net and actually go after Graf's forehand to move Graf off the court some to open the court to go after Graf's backhand. Graf loved to run around forehand inside out and that would go to Evert's backhand (which was and is one of greatest strokes, shots in tennis history), a good up the line backhand by Evert would really work Graf over and open up the backhand.
    Evert loved to hit those backhands everywhere on the court!
    Sure Graf has that powerful forehand (which could have off days even at her peak and when Graf was winning singles slams Seles was gone) would be flashier than Evert. Yet Evert's groundies off both side more solid and aggressive enough to win enough points overall in the long rallies. Evert in the long rallies. Graf could not hit enough winners off both sides in the rallies to beat Evert in that situation.
    Look at how close Evert was with Graf when Evert wasn't winning slams. Evert was still having 3 set matches with Graf in 1989 when Graf was at her peak and Evert a few years past peak. Graf was 19-20 and Evert 34-35, thats A BIG Difference and why the last few matches I don't hold up since Ever was past her peak years, Evert mentally was ready to retire in 1989. Yeah Wimbledon final 1989 but Evert was drained from Golarsa and Evert was done with tour at this point. Yet still getting to semifinals of Wimbledon. Quarterfinals of US Open in 1989.
    Evert was also flexible enough to keep bending down for the Graf slice. Evert! Even on a great serving day by Graf, Evert's return could block back to get point going and if Graf wasn't serving great Evert would be controlling the points. Evert's serve with a high percentage of first would be fine, Graf would get some winner returns but not enough if Evert got 75% or more of first serves and go to Graf's backhand with occasionally going to forehand. Evert! :) my vote in this at their peaks match up! The Evert 13 straight years winning at least a single slams every year (a few times more than 1) is GREATNESS! That record will never be broken.

Seles played 95 US final losing 2 graf, won the 96 auzi & made 96 USfinal. Her tragic incident was awful but not grafs fault. how seles handled initially upon return was excellent considering 11 match win streak & 2 str8 slam finals winning 1, After that seles will tell anyone it was her eating habits, lack of fitness & worrying about her dad that hurt her most

She won not only 18 single slams, but also won numerous slam doubles and mixed doubles to the tune i believe of over 50 all told. I am one of the greatest graf fans out there but she never won any mixed slams and i believe only has 2 slams doubles titles. The WTA named her player of the year, but that is not the number one ranking. In 94 Axtranta Sanchez was the year-end number one. In 95 the WTA named both Graf and Seles as the player of the year, but that tie was broken by the ITF and John Barrett. As it was in the case of Sanchez. The list for the world number one female tennis player is one the web for everyone to see, with the breakdowns. It is not the WTA year end list, either !!

    @Melancholist74 Absolutely not true, if the 1hr 23 min rain delay in Australia didn't happen in 88, the final would have been very different ! In fact Chris injured her knee badly in the Fed Cup in 86 which hampered her play for the rest of 86 and throughout 87, (which Evert made no excuses about, and is a little know fact). She moved and play much better in 88 and was not dominated by Graf like in 87.

    Blame the trainer...he/she diagnosed it. Serena was moving awkwardly to the ball in the beginning...not saying it was because of the rib, but it's a fact. Davenport's level dropping due to HER injury was what caused the actual turnaround in that match...somewhere around 3-all in the 2nd, Lindsay tweaked something and never really recovered.

    Seeing how no new generation has been able to break through against the big 3 shows actually how impressive it was for Graf to push revert and Martina aside. People say how it was just that they were older, but they’re actually younger than even Djoker, the youngest of the big 3. Yes technology has aided career longevity but it shows how it takes a mentality as strong as Graf to break through - not just youth and talent. Without Graf you can imagine every and Martina seeing no reason to assume they were not still in their prime.

    My opinion is chris brought steadiness & solid ground strokes to the game, martina brought athleticism & to some degree power mostly from her 90 mph serve (which later pales in comparison to the regular 115 mph speed of todays players), what steffi brought was raw power in a big first serve usually about 100 mph and a forehand with power pace and accuracy not seenpreviously in womens tennis. She also bridged that gap of natural athleticism between the steady evert and the athlete navratilova

She's yours to celebrate. I have no doubts or questions about what I've seen... And certainly nothing I've indicated is meant to pull Martina, Court or Graf down in any way. For the 2nd question, Chris says she performed best in '85 in large part due to the racquet improving play, making it easier to play well. With more challenging equipment, you don't play "as well"..Steve Flink watched her game closest & says her concentration peak was 1974-78. If you stop playing with wood & go graphite, you play better. Chris is unique in not being able to have played at mental peak AND physical peak at the same time, simply due to the era.
