Chris Evert beats Bonnie Gadusek in Classic Ice Maiden Match - 1983 Deerfield Final

- Once upon a time, Bonnie Gadusek walked into the press room and announced she was going to beat Chris Evert in the finals of Deerfield Beach, Florida to win her very first tournament. As one would expect, those words entered Evert's ears like a drill and she responded with some of her most laser-beamed tennis of 1983, in a performance where the Ice Maiden set the chill dial to stone cold.
Lynda Carter was the tournament host and spent most of the 6-0 first set beatdown in the booth with Mary Carillo, which was an added bonus. Despite the result of Gadusek winning only 4 games in the match, it was a well-fought encounter, and young Bonnie showed she wasn't ready to make the claim she did, but she sure had plenty of game and spunk.

Well Evert's career win /loss percentage is 89.995. It is higher than the following players: Bueno, King, Goolagong, Navratilova, Austin, Graf, Seles, Sanchez-Vicario, Davenport, Hingis, Henin, either Williams sister, or Sharapova. In other words, every woman who reached #1 and played a professional match in the modern era, but Margaret Court ( 93%) who strattled the amateur and professional eras.

I think Gadusek was probably the perfect opponent for Evert to play against. She hit the ball with just enough pace to give Chrissie something to work with, and was willing to come up to the net, and allow Chrissie to hit her superb passing shots or her trademark lob. And to top it off, Bonnie didn't have nearly enough court sense, craft or court coverage to cope with Chrissie's groundstrokes.
Nobody has mentioned how incredibly FIT Chris looks here ! This match was played in the last few months of 1983 when Chris rededicated herself to the game and hired a personal trainer to help her get into fighting shape to challenge Martina for the upcoming 1984 season.
Chris knew she had to start a training regimen if she had any hopes to challenge Martina after a disappointing 1983 season, which turned out to be Martina's best with only one loss all year. Chris‘s new training regimen is obvious as she punishes Bonnie all over the court ! A well deserved loss for Bonnie after running off her mouth !

How many players have successfully mouthed off about beating Chris and ended up on the winning side? ZERO. Even Martina was smart enough to not EVER do that, even during her winning streak against Chris.

For someone who didn’t start playing tennis until she was like 13/14 (after a gymnastics injury that could have killed her), Gadusek had a pretty nice career. She reached a career high ranking of of #8 (5 straight years in the top 20), won 5 titles (5 other finals), 2 major quarterfinals (3 4th rounds), and had wins over top 10 and top 20 players like King, Jaeger, Mandlíková, Man. Maleeva, K. Maleeva, sabatini, Garrison, Sukova, Turnbull, MJ Fernández, Kohde-Kilsch, Hanika, Casals, Barker, Ruzici, Balestrat, Durie, Pfaff, Jausovec, Bunge, Bonder-Kriess, Bassett, Lindqvist, Kelesi, and Rehe (all in a span of about 5 to 6 years).

Just in case young Bonnie didn't get the hint after this match, Chris absolutely hammered her into the ground like a tent peg at their next meeting at Palm Beach four months later - 6/0 6/1. And as for the comment by Mary Carillo: 'I think she just wants to take her to the shed, that's what I think' - the first time I heard that I thought Mary said 'take her to the sh*t', which is what Chris did.

In 1983 when this match was played Chris was being brutalized by Martina without a single win.
Perhaps Bonnie was merely vocalizing what the players were secretly thinking or talking about Chris's game.
Little did they know Chris was revamping her fitness routine and in the midst of switching to a graphite racquet to keep up with the times albeit a year or two later than she should have.
Not sure why she was still playing with a wooden racquet here since she already debuted the graphite at one or two tournaments prior.
When Jimmy Evert shows up on the court watching Chris practice, you know she's dead SERIOUS !
No one can put the ball in the corner time after time and as consistently as Chrissy. I am studying her match tactics.
There was sort of a hidden animosity between these two, though perhaps it was overrated by the media. Bonnie gave Chris a scare the first time they played against each other, that being the fourth round of the 1982 US Open, when she was up 6-4 and 1-0 (a break in the second set) before losing every game after that, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. Prior to another match, she was quoted as saying she would beat Chris, but was then promptly defeated by a somewhat perturbed Chris.
Gadusek one of those players of which there was a lot in the 80s. One dimensional baseliners with two handed backhands, who were fairly poor movers around the court. No wonder that Chris and Martina were so dominant. They really were light years better than most of the other players.
chris evert is so consistent on her game. she is a good tactian. she does not have to over power u. she uses strategy and tactics to beat her opponent a lot of her game is based on smart play.
There's a great story about Bonnie in Pam Shriver's autobiography/tour diary, Passing Shots (1985), when they played an exhibition match. Usually a fun event with lots of rallies for the crowd, Bonnie played "like it was the final of Wimbledon" which annoyed Pam to no end! Bonnie overcame a lot to become a professional player so she was ALWAYS intense but the absolute LAST player you wanted to trash-talk was Chrissie!
Bonnie Gadusek referred to herself as "The Animal". That alone says quite a bit! Oddly enough, she was one of the few players who retired early (was she 21 or 22?) and while she was still very much at the top of her game, ranked somewhere between 9 and 15. For all the hype about her aggressive tendencies, she did not seem to take to the tennis player's life all that well, as she later admitted: the constant traveling, the grueling exercise, and so forth.
Looked for some news articles for the quotes from Gadusek and found another article from when she retired. She stated she had Evert down and on the ropes at the U.S. Open-just a few games from a huge upset. Evert won that match 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.

I applaud Bonnie's vigor about her game prior to this match. Not many people have come out and said they are going to beat Chris. Hana did it in the Wimbledon 1984 semis and Chris routed her 6-1, 6-1. Bonnie was a fine player and had great results, including a good amount of time in the top 10. Still, she must have thought to herself after the match that she should have keep quiet and said she was looking forward to the chance to play Chris, not bear her.
At this stage in Evert's career, if you were outside the top 5 in the world, your only hope was that Evert walk on the court, less than fully involved. You might get some errors in those first games, maybe small lapses you could turn into a first set. Trash talk was not conducive to success. The fact Gadusak got 4 games in the second, shows she really did have game and talent.

Even lower ranked players who managed to pull off upsets against Chris (Lisa Bonder, Zina Garrison, Kate Gompert, Kathy Jordan, Raffaella Reggi) were smart enough to never show such cockiness even AFTER they had beaten her.

Only 33 out of 328 opponents could win against her, most of them just once or twice. What did Bonnie hope for? Still, a big achievement for her, considering the fact she was a gymnast and took up tennis as a therapy while recovering from an injury she suffered during her preparation for the 1980 Olympics. And this match took place just a couple of years later.
nick fit I actually admire Bonnie very much, as she overcame such incredible hardship (and near permanent paralysis) to excel in a sport that most people need to take up at very early ages. Even Andrea Jaeger, who once was ranked second in the world, managed to defeat Chris only three times in her career. Tracy Austin and Hana Mandlikova had better luck against her, as did Billie Jean King when Chris was much younger. Clearly, only Martina can make the claim of exerting any sort of dominance against Chris. With all that said, Bonnie deserves accolades for her courage and determination.
Great point... I remember an interview with Evonne Goolagong in 1973 during a spell when Evert was really dominating her. The interviewer asked Evonne if Evert's domination was due to the fact that the matches were being played on clay. I expected Evonne's answer to be "yes". Surprisingly (or may be be not so surprisingly), she said "no" and that the surface had nothing to do with it and that Chris was tough on any surface. Evonne probably did not want to say otherwise and then face Evert on a non-clay surface!
Virginia Wade actually said that the worst thing you could do was to beat Evert and then play her again.. These were much better and greater players than Bonnie and just brings out how immature she was to make such disparaging statements.
Ern C Quite a difference from the egotistical and finger pointing players of today. Funny how both Virginia and Evonne would pull off the stunning upsets against Evert at Wimbledon in 1977 and 1980 respectively.

This match was played during the height of Martina's domination of the sport. Chris was beginning to get written off by the press and in the minds of her fellow players. Bonnie made the mistake of voicing what some players in the locker room were thinking, but she paid the price for it. She also had never beaten Evert, so pretty stupid of Bonnie!! Evert played to prove a point: In your face!!

Martina was still being beaten by Chris in 83' 1984 to about 1986 early part is when Martina really dominated and be Chris 13 straight times. But once Chris beat her I think it was Los Angeles I want to say, they pretty much stayed even head to head. Of course let's not forget the 85 French victory, and the 86 repeat victory for Chris. 87 and on through Chris's retirement they stayed even. 43-37, the edge to Martina. If Chris and Martina had not played each other in so many finals and grand slams they each would have gone well over 20 apiece. That shows a strong rivalry, unlike what we see today. It's no wonder Graf won 22 with Seles being out, And the same thing with Serena. No real consistent rivals.
Chris was dubbed the "Ice Maiden" by the sports media because of her complete calmness on the court. (She was quoted once as resenting the label only because it made her appear ruthless and unfeeling as a person). Bonnie dubbed herself "The Animal" because of her predatory and relentless nature on the court. She once said that one of the greatest feelings would be to defeat a player by 6-0, 6-0, something she actually did against Elise Burgin at the US Open in 1982.
This is so classic. I used to take lessons from Bonnie in the latr eighties. I'm sure this one stung. Two greats.

No she wasn't that great, she has won 157 titles, 18 Grand Slams, has the best winning percentage of all-time (90%), best Grand Slam record of any player, and is number 3 on the computer at weeks at number 1, if they had a computer before Nov of 75, she would most certainly be # 2, and probably even #1, because the was undisputedly the number 1, player in the world in 74 & 75, and would have surely had weeks at number #1 in 73. No, Chris Evert wasn't that great ....

Bonnie was hitting really hard for sure, but Chrissie handled it well (obviously). I don't know why everyone is being so hard on Bonnie, though. As Chrissie said in the clip you have to believe you're going to win, which is ironic in hindsight because Chrissie admitted to Martina in that great ESPN piece that she walked on the court knowing she'd lose to Martina.

well...at the time of chrissie's reign.....i was undefeated...and i know i could beat chrissie with one hand tied behind my back.....i could volley..i could lob...and my serves were almost unreturnable......my passing shots made chrissies look amateurish........................and i know......for a fact......after a match against chrissie.....i would grab my stuff and RUNNN OFF THE COURT....??...i wouldn't want people to see how embarrassed i was from losing so badly
Chris wouldn't have had any weeks at #1 in 1973- but, yes- 74- she would have had +40, but- had Sles not been stabbed- Graf wouldn't have her total, either- Monica missed 120 weeks- Graf was #1 110 of them.....

***** Martina was even more comfortable with it. In 82-84 there was Martina's 13 victories streak against Chris. Martina playing with graphite and Chris still with a wood raquet. Chris should have switched to graphite much more earlier
+Mats Yever I think most people would agree. There is a match on here from 1983, with Kate Latham where Chris is talking about it with Mary Carilo - but she did wait too long. The rest of the tour switched at the end of 1981..Chris and Tracy still played with wood, Chris is the last to win a GS with wood. French 83.

There were several player's that were going to beat Chris, when she became the #2 player in the world, Pam Shriver being another one... saying that she always met Martina and not Chris, and that if she met Chris she would win, well right after she made that statement she met Chris and was dimissed ... like everyone else. Chris and Bonnie would meet in the US Open in 84, in the 4th round or quaters, and Bonnie won the first 4 of the first 6 games, and then Chris won the last 10 games, 6-4, 6-0.

I don't feel necessarily that specific eras have greater or lesser depth, once the tour became international, so much as the the depth became surface oriented. When Chris came along in the early 70's , you saw incredibly deep and dangerous fields in the grass majors, with Court, King, Wade, Goolagong and Casals, then Navratillova , Mandlikova and Sukova all superb S/V players, but lousy clay fields other than Court and Goolagong and second tier Europeans. In the 80's it reversed,.
