    ‎ Cory visited the first ever Kölle Zoo, a German pet store that both Oliver Knott and Chris Lukhaup used to work at in the 1990's. They have all sorts of fish, including a nano section specially stocked with colorful shrimp varieties, endlers, and bulldog plecos. Cory was especially intrigued by their system of using reusable containers (which come with acclimation instructions), instead of fish bags. There is also an indoor cafe where you can sit next to koi ponds under the shade of live trees.

      I think that indoor pond that you can easily view would be a great addition. Kind of like a "slice of nature" area. Maybe you could grow out Amazonian plants in that area as well. The containers are also pretty freaking cool.

      It's fairly new in Germany. My local Kölle Zoo started like 2 years ago, before that it was only bags like in most other fish stores or DIYs with an aquarium section, which is pretty common in Germany.

    I think the "bulldog plecos" at 3:12 might actually be Parotocinclus Jumbo (Pitbull Pleco/Otos), (which would explain why they're in the Nano section). Popular over there, but real hard to find over here. I think I'm on three different websites' wait list for these. Had them back in 2011, kicking myself for not breeding them. It's a fish that never stops working. Doesn't have interesting color/fin morphs like Bristlenose, but also doesn't redecorate your tank for you. You'll watch it pick up a pebble, roll it around in its mouth, and spit the thing out completely spotless.

    **puts needle on broken record** wish we had anything half as nice in the US. We have a long way to go to advance the hobby to a larger audience in the US - not everyone is buying a spongebob setup for their kids. - but that's the majority of what is seen in stores.
    The tank selection was really nice here - something clean looking and well designed makes it a lot easier to get buy-in from parents/spouse/roommates. Seeing nice planted display tanks does this too.
    I have nano tanks that are rimless but with fitted glass tops (and a filtration compartment in the back like a reef tank), but my big tanks are designed pretty much the same way as they were in the 90s with a big black rim around the top. We've evolved a lot with filters and lighting, but we need to see more nice system designs.
    I do see it here to a degree, but mostly on the reef side where this is more of a market for high end setups. But surely there is something we can bring to market between the $300 display tank and the $3000 one?

    I‘m from Stuttgart and I think Kölle is worse than before corona.
    Before Corona it was better kept clean etc.
    Also here small Shops are nearly dead. All is in the hand of big chains in many areas . At least its my feeling and its sad.
    Last time I was there ( 2 weeks ago) a lot of the plants were out, the fridge wirh the live food tubes was skinking and somehow dirty and so on.
    I buy there just cat food if I need something now or cat grass, toys or hardscape
    But I would personslly never buy there animals. 🤷‍♀️

      Advanced in tech maybe, not in talent to keep and breed fish. Anybody can throw endless money at a tank/lights/filtration. The goal of this type of store is to create artwork, and their buyer segment is tiny, and it's a luxury for most people. A store like this if it even would survive in the States would need to be in a HCOL highly populated area.

    @annika8877 2 роки тому +11

    I live in Germany and it's really interesting to see you visiting so many stores here and how they are different from American stores!
    Regarding the reusable buckets: I have a small 20l tank with some Red Cherry Shrimp and snails. Sometimes I will sell some of my shrimp if they become too many. I then usually use small, transparent plastic buckets (maybe 0.5 to 1l) that I bought with food inside (like potato salads) as transport box. If you have something like that available I can really suggest you to use it. They close very tightly, should not contain any harmful chemicals and the people can watch the animal's from the outside. Plus they are complete free as I bought the food anyway. :D

    I really hope your expanded store ends up something like this. You have made me hate American stores with these videos. I cant even go to them anymore. Its not just the layouts, but the offerings, the education aspects, and cleanliness aspect as well. Its just not their in American fresh or salt water stores. I wouldn't be afraid to put fish from these stores strait in a display. Here in the USA they wouldn't be within 10ft of my display tank without a minimum of two months in quarantine and pre treated with meds, which I shouldn't have to do because it stresses the fish and I out more. The health and cleanliness aspects are on another level in German and Japanese fish stores, and I now look at it as the standard that if you don't live up to as a LFS then your lazy or bad at planning your business and saving for it before you start it. STEP IT UP AMERICA! NOW!

    The high energy prices in Europe are really ruining the hobby. Its getting expensive to heat an aquarium so a lot of people are stopping. Its also why Stendker has decided after 45 years to stop breeding Discus. Won't surprise me if prices will go up further.

    HEY CORY! That all-in-one tank looks like my main tank, that is maybe a better quality/brand if it's not the same one (Superfish). The ugly filter box inside can be easily removed with a long thin utensil like a spatula or something. It's a very strange design choice and will obviously make any scape redundant. Using a HOB on these tanks is a must. They are really cool tanks to play around with.

    I'm just getting back into full on hobby mode instead of downsizing and basic maintenance (life). What happened to our US chain stores? There's a minimal amount (if that) of fish, plants, and supplies. Amazon has stuff, but not the quality in a lot of areas. I will be needing plants, and I do like to see the plants I'm buying.

  • @mattkinsella9856
    @mattkinsella9856 2 роки тому

    It's a good point made about the pricing of the Eheim feeder. If people are just always driving down the price on Amazon or eBay and that's all people are chasing, then these stores can't make a profit and we won't see this level of quality to browse. Maybe that's where U.S. stores have fallen behind in the last 20 years. Personally I do buy some cheaper things online but I ALWAYS make a point of visiting my local fish stores every 2-3 weeks and buying something I need, without looking at the price. Just to play my small part in trying to make sure they are always there. If we all made that effort perhaps more stores could improve and aim at the level of the place in this video.

    So the containers work like this: They charge you 3 Euros for a container. You can bring it back to them, they refund the 3 Euros. Or you can keep it an bring it for your next purchase and they will use your container. So it is like a multi-way system, quite like pretty much all of the beer bottles in Germany.

    so cool to see that on the pamphlet.
    as for buckets instead of bags, one of the biggest issues is that those buckets are never getting recycled. Similar in issue to something Nespresso pods have to deal with. it's all designed with a specific purpose, but especially in the US people just can't be bothered sometimes and that creates insane waste. In terms of raw material to produce the buckets, energy to do so, etc. I don't know that that balances out in terms of environmental cost.

    i have the 'home 110' tank that you like the all in one function, its nice but i have to say has its flaws, one that i have found is that the glass lid condensates alot and if you remove it you have alot of splash from the filter that causes buildup on the light. the other side is the filter box that is there is limited and you cant modify it much without it looking out of place. i would like to see a mod that you can pull the filter outlet via the back and have it run along the back.

    I also like that the post in the store support post were green your color and the big metal I-beams or green your color plus you could put tags up on I-beams if you had them

    getting your money back for the buckets is a great business model because people get another reason to come back and maybe buy more fish or product.

    Customer brings their own container is a smart idea for local fish stores. 6:44
