Heard this song at every German Beer Festival when I was stationed there during the Cold War. Didn't know it was Irish until I walked into an Irish pub in West Berlin and learned otherwise. Perhaps the best beer drinking song ever.

There's something of an irony here as this is actually a C17 English 'alehouse ballad' warning of the dangers of strong drink. The Dubliners learnt this version either from Norfolk traditional singer Sam Larner or more likely from English singer Louis Killen in Newcastle in 1960 (Luke Kelly frequented his folk club). They recorded it in 1963 released it as a single and had a big chart hit in 1964. Prior to this the song was virtually unknown in Ireland and now everyone thinks it is a traditional Irish drinking song. But it ain't.

    Lyrics:
    Verse 1 (Paddy Reilly)
    I've been a wild rover for many's a year.
I spent all my money on whiskey and beer.
Now I'm returning with gold in great store.
And I never will play the wild rover no more.
    Chorus (All)
    And it's no nay never.
    No nay never no more.
Will I play the wild rover.
    No never no more.
    Verse 2 (Ronnie Drew)
I went into an alehouse I used to frequent.
And I told the landlady, my money was spent.
I asked her credit, she answered me nay.
"Such a custom as yours I can have any day."
    Chorus (All)
    And it's no nay never.
    No nay never no more.
Will I play the wild rover.
    No never no more.
    Verse 3 (Sean Cannon)
I took out of my pockets, ten sovereigns bright.
And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight.
She said, "I have whiskeys and wines of the best.
And the words that you told me were only in jest."
    Chorus (All)
    And it's no nay never.
    No nay never no more.
Will I play the wild rover.
    No never no more.
    Verse 4 (Jim McCann)
I'll go home to my parents, confess what I've done.
I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son.
If the caress me as oft times before.
The I never will play the wild rover no more.
    Chorus (All)
    And it's no nay never.
    No nay never no more.
Will I play the wild rover.
    No never no more.
    And it's no nay never.
    No nay never no more.
Will I play the wild rover.
    No never no more.
