    A tip for older (or ill) people with a pup.
    I have been breeding dogs for close to twenty years. As I've gotten older, trying to potty train puppies in the middle of the night caused too much exhaustion. So I now crate train during the day and then at night they go into a small ex-pen divided into a wooden pellet potty box spot and a sleeping area. It's just big enough for them to either sleep or else stand in the potty box. That way, they're able to go to the bathroom in the potty box during the night and then back to the crate training during the day. I have not found it to impede potty training at all. Yet I still get enough rest that way.

    • @ORSkie
      @ORSkie 3 місяці тому +8

      Oh, and the same goes for those working through the day. If you set up an ex-pen with a potty box (wood pellets in a container ranging from a smaller rubbermaid container to a calf sled... with larger litters I have used a 'crabby sandbox'...) Then crate train in the mornings, evenings and on weekends.
      This way, the pup learns not to go on the floor, & that there is a specific area to go in, so it's not confusing for them that they *aren't* supposed to go on the floor later. Because it's NEVER been ok to do so. Once pups have used it, take a little bit of those pee scented wood pellets outside to your designated potty area when you want to extend to outside.
      Pups learn the 'go potty' command from the time they are three and a half weeks old as I train them on the pellets. They are rewarded with praise and / or treats for using it.
      So, it is very quick for them to learn to transfer that outside. The vast majority of my owners pretty much have a housetrained, potty trained pup within a day or two.

    I got a deaf border collie puppy at 8 weeks old. He is 5 months now and fully potty trained and I used a very similar schedule and I used a doggie doorbell that goes off every time his nose touches it. Obviously he can’t hear it but he knows to go potty he just touches it and we come to the door 😊

    Love this. I had my most recent puppy potty trained in a few days using similar techniques. It’s a lot of work to keep taking them out but if you’re on it then you’re golden once they get it. Also having other house broken dogs around to help show them what the point of our going out is for is super helpful. Actually involving your other trained dogs in the training of your puppy accelerates most things in my opinion. This is a fun and useful series.

      hi i have a question. i got an 8 week puppy last week (now nine) and we’re trying to potty train her, we’ve seen to have cage training down but for some reason potty training is a little harder for her. how did you potty train yours? also, how do you take your dog out? our vet and breeder told us not to take her out the house because since she’s not fully vaccinated any contact with sick dog feces would get her really sick and possibly kill her in less than 48 hours.

    A very important thing is the food. Feed BARF = less poops and more control over the potty. BARF is high on water as well - which helps the puppy be hydrated without drinking water non stop which is typical for the kibble diet.

    This is exactly the way we've trained all of our dogs, for decades. The quickest learner ((expected) was a Standard Poodle we had. When you hear that Poodles are intelligent, know that it is absolutely true. Bandit was the smartest dog we ever owned, from puppyhood to adulthood. He was 100% house trained in a few days and we got him at 8 weeks old. The next quickest was a Doberman that we also got at 8 weeks old and it only took her about one week to be 100% house trained. Its helps when someone is home all the time. My wife and I were on different schedules and that makes it much easier. Back then I tried to take a week off from work when we got a new puppy, just to help get a good start on the training. Let's face it, house breaking is the most important thing with a new dog and is a big reason that a lot of dogs end up in shelters. Everything else is much easier to deal with. Great job keeping it real on the videos. 👍

    some dogs take a lot longer to be potty trained. I did this exact style of potty training for both of my dogs. My Bullmastiff took 2 weeks to be 100 percent potty trained and he has never gone to the bathroom in the house since. My boxer however took about a year to get to the point to where I trust him being alone and outside of his crate in the house.

    Schedule! Best thing I ever did with a puppy- with previous pups I relied on my instincts. With our GSD I put a schedule in place and it went beautifully. I always marked with Go potty and Gooood potty. He’s 2 now and I still like to catch him doing business outside and mark it withGood potty. As a camping family it makes life easier when I need him to handle things quickly. Great information Tom. It looks like Burleigh is growing so fast!

      @@eaglepink1678 Honestly, he never did (truly). I set one of those plastic 4 sided play areas for kids in my kitchen - moved our table out to make room). Probably 3 ft x 5 ft I think-only living spot with tile, not carpet. When I couldn’t be with him every second, Id put in there as his quiet place for the first bit, until I successfully crate trained. Crate added to pen at about 11 weeks old. Fed and cozy spot inside. The real secret was all the research I did setting a “puppy schedule for potty training”(you can Google it), and I took it literally- with alarms set on my phone. Basically eat (in his enclosure) potty, playtime/inside/outside, potty, rest (in his enclosure), potty, training/outdoor play, potty and repeat. Over and over through the day and evening. 30 -45 minutes activity sessions as age/activity level allowed. If I saw him even begin to look like he may need to go - we’d immediately go outside. It worked very well for us. Luckily our family room/kitchen is very near back door, and I always went out with him so I could make a huge deal when successful. Even after potty trained, I still stuck with the schedule a long time ( longer intervals on some) . I liked the structure for myself so I could still get things done and he thrived with the schedule. I also showed him how to use a bell on doorknob a couple times and he did that once he was trained. Now he just lets me know because our other dog would do bell just for fun lol

    Great tips. We crate trained our Shih Tzu and Rotweiller when they were pups for the very same reason. Potty training. Plus it also helped with separation anxiety before it could become an issue.
    We feed our dogs their last meal at 5pm. Then at about 8pm, they go out for the last time until morning.
    Our Shih Tzu is now an elderly dog and so she has potty pads in the bathroom for her during the night. Sometimes she needs it, sometimes not.
    They both know that the back door is their potty exit, so they stand in the hallway if they need to go.
    They are no longer in crates as our Shih Tzu, Kali, is now 13 years old and our rottie, Buster, is 6 years. They can hold it for about 10 hours.

      The Shih Tzu is about 5 years older than the Rottie, so she mothered him when he was growing up. The Rottie, Buster, is very respectful of where Kali is before he jumps up on the bed and things.

      @MissJenni_ISO 3 місяці тому +1

      @dominiquequ we did train her with the potty pad as a pup as well as crate trained her. We did the potty pads with both of our dogs until they were about 4 months old, the crate until they were about a year old.
      Then as Kali got older, she kept jumping off the bed during the night. She was either getting water, or finding a place to pee. She was going in to the bathroom on the floor mat, so we put puppy pads there in place of the floor mat. Now she potty on the pads. We pick them up when we need to put the floor mat down for showers.

    If your puppy cries in the crate a ton at first and you are home with them, put their leash on them and tie them to your waist. That way you can keep them in your eyesight nonstop. Some people keep theirs on a long leash 24/7. I did the bell thing too and it was successful as well!! My pup took 2 weeks to fully potty train but I didn’t do as strict of a schedule.. You should talk about size of crate Tom. I had one client with a puppy and they stupidly would only have me come at noon to put him out. They also put the puppy in the same size crate as their husky so of course, the dog peed and pooped in that crate every single day that I came because he couldn't hold it and because the crate was large enough for him to have an area to do that.

      @tomdavisofficial I realize that, but you mentioned the crate with respect to potty training and I'm just trying to emphasize the importance of having a properly sized crate so that the puppy won't do its business there like what I experienced with the client I had who put a pitbull puppy in a crate that was the size for an adult dog.

    Did pretty much the same thing with my golden pup. Although to make sure she knew to immediately go potty outside, especially in the middle of the night, instead of walking around, sniffing for 30 mins we used that same type of metal playpen outside. It forced her to not wander and sniff forever before going and also kept her confined so you don't have to chase them around the yard at 2 am when they suddenly think its playtime after they go and you're trying to go back inside lol. It worked very quickly. At 4 1/2 months, thankfully, she's beyond fully potty trained, day and night and her recall is vastly improved so she doesn't really need it anymore. Now to try and curb her of ripping my grass out and chewing/eating rocks 😂 Any tips on that would be great! Lol

    You mentioned don’t leave the water bowl out. As puppies don’t they need more water than when they are adults? Got me scratching my head, we have a 4 month old Rotti and we leave his water bowl out next to his crate and remove it in the afternoon. What would you recommend to minimize the pee and at the same time provide him with enough H20? Ty

    I got a 10 week old cockapoo 2 weeks ago. He is untrainable. He won't use puppy pads, he would sooner wander around in circles for 2 hours in the back yard than poo outside, he only wants to do his business on my floor! I've tried everything mentioned, lifting him up midway and taking him outside, he'll just hold onto it for hours outside, until we go back indoors. I tried using the crate, but he just does his business in the crate.

    I have an Aussie who was an absolute nightmare to potty train until I used this method. Someone suggested I basically lose it, go nuts, overly celebrate in their face basically when they go outside. It took 2 days of that and he was potty trained. I didnt do the negative piece only because it went so fast once I knew. Once I was over the top celebrating it was incredible how well it worked.

    My brother in law has a 10 week old puppy as well. His mom has 2 really old small doggies that need pee pads because they cant make it up and down stairs easily. His dog is leaning towards pee pads and im trying to tell him how crappy/inconvenient/expensive it is, specifically for a dog expecting to weigh in 45-55 lbs. I taught mine (his old dog he couldn't handle) in a week. He had the dog for 3 months and still didn't teach it anything. Lets just say im slightly nervous for his new dog.

    Bell training doesn’t work when you are out visiting or when the dog is in a crate. What I would recommend if you have a largish garden is to create a toilet spot. It took a long time but my dog is 100% reliable to go to his “spot” to pee and poop. Much easier than doing a poop patrol in a large garden before the grandkids arrive or before cutting the grass.

    I have a question/situation. I’ve housebroken puppies before but my latest dog I adopted as a 4yo adult. He came housebroken and I’ve had him 9 months and he’s had one or two pee incidents but those were my fault. He is crate trained. In the 9 months I’ve had him he had never ASKED to go out. He holds it all day if I push it that far for 24 hours, literally wake up walk him then don’t let him out till the next morning. I don’t do that on purpose as every dog I’ve known asks to go out, not him. He is stuck at my side no matter what I do so going to the door to ask to go out never happens. He also never has accidents (other than things I caused). I’m fine with it as I just keep a schedule and he 1s and 2s every time. Any idea if this is ok? How do I get him to go to the door if it’s not ok.

      I'm not a trainer but I would think giving him a chance to go out at least every 6-8 hours is a good rule of thumb. Like more power to him that he can hold it so well but I can't imagine that would be comfortable. If you don't work from home I'd at least do morning walk, after work walk, and before bedtime chance to go.

      He, I work from home so he gets wake up, lunch, 4pm ish and bedtime walks. He just has never asked to go out. The time he went 24 hours is when a wrench was thrown into life type deal, I don’t make a habit of that much time between.

      @@treese83 Some dogs are just a bit different or have strange habits. My dog has also never even tried to ask to go outside, just waiting patiently when we decide that he might need to go, so we give him enough opportunities and have our routine.
