- The Tokyo Disney Resort is one of the best Disney Resorts in the entire world, which is rather ironic as... it's not Disney. So how did they manage to convince the Disney company to go against Walt's wishes and proceed to create one of the best Disney resorts worldwide?

Ironically it’s the one that’s still keeping his legacy alive.
I totally understand why Tokyo Disneysea gets so much love, but honestly Tokyo Disneyland is really amazing as well. Yes, it has many of the same rides you can see in America but the parades, the food, the cast members, and the overall vibe are so different that it's just as awesome as Disneysea to me.
This is interesting history. To think, the one place Walt didn't want would become the best Disney park

@@acethetics3878 This is pretty much what is said in the Imagineers documentary on Disney+. It's obviously a very sugarcoated look at Disney history.
And the best rest of that thought is, "What is it about Tokyo Disney Resort that makes them the best?" And I don't know the best answer but you can't deny their executive board holds vastly different values and prioritizations than the Bob's and the other people on the board that for some reason receives basic anonymity-void from being the target of any public critiques while still playing a heavy hand in influencing the way the entire company operates-everything, from valuing their stockholders over their consumers and fans (which helps the share price short term but hurts it long term) _to_ their company ethos, how it doesn't value its cast members because for example, if the company sees an increase in revenue as the byproduct of the work of only the higher tier cast members as the rationale for increasing their "standard of living". Like how does that makes sense??
Anyways, if more people thought about the reasons _why_ Tokyo Disney Resort is the best Disney park than our world would be in a much better place lol ⚆_⚆
I was fortunate to work at Tokyo Disneyland from 1987-1990 in entertainment. It was truly a lifetime experience I will always cherish. I haven't been there since 1990. I hope to go back and revisit my playground one day in the near future as I know much has changed. Arigato for posting this!
I have a question you may be able to answer. I visited Tokyo Disney in 89 or 90 and distinctly remember some sort of attraction where guests stood on a flat moving escalator and were shown rooms from futuristic homes. It reminds me of the old 1950s house of the future. Does this ring any bells? I cannot find any evidence of this or the name of the attraction. Any info is helpful. Thanks! :)
@@Chainsawhappythat's the postshow of meet the world, an attraction that used to be in tomorrowland that celebrated japan's history. There was an exhibit at the end of the attraction with a moving walkway where you walk through homes of the future. A monsters inc ride replaced meet the world (a really worthy replacement imo).
The oriental land co basically wanted A Magic Kingdom that the Japanese people didn’t have to travel half way across the world to go to. They didn’t necessarily want it to be original or Japanese they wanted the same experience in Orlando and Anaheim just in Japan.
Am I the only one here who always felt that the original concept for Walt's EPCOT could've likely been built & possibly even been successful in Japan? I feel that culture might be better-suited, especially in the late 60's & early 70's, & accepting of the initial project.
As the Imagineers quickly realized, you can't experiment with people's lives. So if you build a living city, the E, P and T would vanish.
@@richardperhai8292 - Except that today both corporations & science experiment w/people's lives ALL the TIME. It's not like those participating in the EPCOT experiment couldn't opt & move out of EPCOT. Residents weren't going to be permanently living there either.
Also, experiments can & will be tweaked to accommodate ever-changing, ever-evolving factors - so who's to say EPCOT wouldn't experience the same? Even before Walt's presentation, the "C" changed from City to Community (pribably b/c of the fact people wouldn't be able to vote for EPCOT's mayor), so EPCOT tweaks sorta-kinda, already happened. When all is said & done, it's likely more, better changes EPCOT's residents would've occurred.
@@Guernicaman Let's take a recent example - the PeopleMover, which broke down for a year. Now imagine your main transportation in and out of the city is down for a whole year. As one of the imagineers said, can you imagine not only giving people an experimental kitchen but one that fails all the time? Disney quickly decided this was not something they wanted to be involved in or noted for. The best you got was Celebration.
@@richardperhai8292 - First off, the Peoplemover didn't "break-down for a year". It was down for maintenence, repairs & deep-cleaning for a little thing called COVID. You might've heard about it.
Second, in a fully-functioning experimental lab environment, you will always have back ups so that things can operate & run. If your neighborhood's Peoplemover breaks down, you could maybe work from home, or take a tram to your job site or the next operational Peoplemover station on the far side of EPCOT. Surely not all People Movers throughtout the city would break down at the same time.
Third, yours is the same kind of talk you heard from the pro-horse & buggy folks against the automobile, the electric trolly & even airplanes. But it takes people who take a chance on progress for progress to happen.
Will things break down? Yes. And things will always get repaired - giving people who live at EPCOT jobs in fields designers didn't even initially thought of.
@@Guernicaman Yeah right. Thats why the opening date was pushed back again andd again and again and again, Many of the experimental things trned out not to be so great (the EVAC system for example). Adnd as for your horse and buggy analogy imagine if the enire city of NY in 1890 was banned from horses and had to use experimental cars that tend to break down, explode etc. People didn't buy prototypes, experimental vehicles, etc. They bought the FINSHED product, which is basically what Celebration is. As I said , the imagineers quickly realized you could not experiment with peoples lives. People think a lot of planning went into EPCOT before Walt died. There wasn't. It was a vauge concept with a painting put togther for a backdrop that was literally made just a few days before filming. EPCOT would have ended up being CO as the E,P and T would fall by the wayside.

TDLR is easily the best Disney Parks resort. Sad most Disney fans will not experience it. Better versions of the attractions, super clean, better food, best cast members. They basically out Disney, with Walts original values for the parks.
Different culture, different people. It can happen in the US but that requires significant social and political changes, which many in the US wouldn't approve of

i booked my trip to japan & i booked my visit to tokyo disneyland in december 2017 & i was so excited for the next 6 months & i finally visited to japan & tokyo disneyland in may 2018
I’ve always wondered if post-war/Pearl Harbor resentment had anything to do with Walt’s decision to ultimately cancel the original Tokyo park plans. At the time, many Americans would have viewed Disney’s dealing with Japan as unpatriotic, etc.
Unlikely. If it was in the 40s perhaps but by the late 50s early 60s when these deals were being worked out Godzilla films were popular, Japanese electronics were on the rise and it was generally accepted that Japan was now a valuable ally, especially against the Soviet Union. The only issue was the main reason Meet the World had been cancelled in Epcot aside from theatre issues which could have been corrected, the main reason is that the show glossed over WW2 and they were afraid veterans visiting with their grandkids would have become offended.

90% of Tokyo Disneyland's Profit probably just comes from their Popcorn Sales and Duffy Merchandise.
*The Popcorn isn't racist. They have like 8 different locations in Disneyland alone to buy different flavors of popcorn (Honey, Barbeque, Soy Sauce, Chocolate, Etc.)

Can't wait for Disney Sea! As an Aussie the JP parks are way easier to get to (well, not that you can go anywhere now..) and you don't have to worry about American gun laws because Japan is similar to here, but I actually thought Tokyo Disneyland sucked. I had a really bad time and my hopes were so high, but I'd bought a double pass to Disney Sea as well and I reluctantly went the next day, but Disney Sea was amazing! Easily my favourite theme park ever, I was meant to be going again this year but I shall return to Mt Whatever I had a long drive today and now I'm rambling. Good video guys!
Nara Dreamland must have really put the kibosh on dealing with anymore Japanese businesses, fair or not, wanting to make another park. Disney still worked with various other Japanese companies like Nintendo to distribute licensed products within the country.

How were the crowds? I've always wanted to go but the lines and crowds always seemed so insane even for Disney standards
@@cuttinol I've been there thrice, and to be honest the crowds are not nearly as bad as the ones in WDW. Yes, you do have to stand in line for 1-2 hours for the most popular rides, but they have an excellent Fast Pass ticketing system that works on a "first come first serve"-basis, granting everyone an equal opportunity of snatching their favorite fast passes (unlike WDW, where you have to book in advance with fast passes selling out 2 months in advance!).
@@cuttinol It's also worth noting that the Japanese are extremely polite, and queuing is just part of their daily routine. They're so well organized, it feels like a breeze.

WOW I had no idea. I recently watched some u tube videos and Disney Sea is so cool. The big fake ship u eat at the hotels and water design was so nice! They even have little paper envelopes for your face mask while you are eating. The food looked so much better than ours DL CA that is. I’d love to go there!
one of things I miss about living in tokyo, just a 40 min. train ride to TDL. Now I gotta take a 1hr 30 min plane ride.

Superb video. Great background. I used to live in Urayasu and visited both parks many times. One point to improve!! In the video you pronounce "Urayasu" as "Yuu-ra-su" but it is really pronounced "Uh-ra-ya-su." Sort it out! Apart from that top marks :)

To be honest, Disneyland Paris never had one too which is a shame as an Euro-EPCOT Centre could have really helped the park’s financial troubles.

It opened in April 15th 1983 literally the exact same month and year I was born but one day off
I know about Nara Dreamland before and have wondered before what it would be like if the plans had gone through and we got Nara Disneyland. I didn't know that the Oriental Land Company tried so soon after. Now I wonder what would have happened if Nara Disneyland was never proposed and we got Tokyo Disneyland in the 60's. I also wonder what it would have been like if they hadn't tried again and we got that Disneyland near Mt. Fuji instead.

Honestly I don’t doubt there could have been xenophobia on Walt’s end. This was 20 years after WWII so relations were still being repaired between the U.S. and Japan.
