Fishing in Miami - 3 locations in Miami - MONSTER fish in a THUNDERSTORM | The Fish Locker

- Fishing from the shore near our holiday property in Marathon in the Florida Keys. Using the skills and lessons I had learned in previous fishing sessions and using the baits I had caught fishing from The Florida Keys Bridges I catch some incredible sharks and fish. I also managed to catch, tag and release a lovely Nurse shark. The tags I use are to help NOAA track shark populations, growth rates and migration routes. All important clues for building a better understanding of these incredible creatures.
Here are links to some of the fishing tackle I used in this video. I hope it helps.

That first fish you caught is called a cow fish, and is related to boxfish, puffer fish, and trigger fish.
Thanks. 👍🏻🎣🐟
Thank you. I was stumped. Hadn't a clue.
My dad used to have horned box fish in his aquarium.
Nice shark. It's good of you to tag & record the species. It's good to see a respectable angler who only takes what he needs & helps with the conservation of the species 👍♥️.
I am simply doing what I feel is right. 💙🎣🦈
A good option I have always held - when fishing and catching. When you return a fish to the water, then get them a bait meal down their gullet - for their pain and travail - which is really what they wanted in the first place - a good meal. They then swim away with a full stomach - and metabolize that during their pain and wound recovery. This makes them (and our Pacific NW sturgeon and trout ) that much more catchable in the future when they grow up.
Good to know, thanks for the info.
That sounds a good and fair practice John. 👍🏻🎣
I caught a rainbow trout with 3 hooks in its mouth..
It was undersize , and I was at least the 4th person to catch it..
I removed the hooks , threw it back & moved down stream.
10 minutes later I caught it Again !
I think this fish knew it would get a meal even if he got caught...
Craziest thing Ever.
John thanks again mate. Love your channel, I learn something new on every endeavor. You are the best. Enjoy The shores of Miami. The keys are much better. Can’t get enough of your show. Love you and the family. Glad you are doing what you enjoy.
We have agreed that we enjoy the keys more than Miami. 🤣😉
@@TheFishLocker I moved from skegness to the keys 8 years ago. I love it here. Let’s go offshore next time your here
Fisherman from Texas here... Traveling to Miami for business in the next few months so searched up the fishing scene and came across your channel. You inspired me. Thank you. Hope to share my experience of fishing in Miami with you soon.
Good luck. I have a couple of older videos fresh water fishing around Houston. We enjoy fishing in the states. 😊👍🏻
Had to work so hard just to get fishing, and you did it! What a light show! You captured more than fish 😉
Really glad I put in the extra effort as I was definitely rewarded with that monster at the end. 😊👍🏻
I usually watch on big screen tv and do not comment. However I think your shots of the Miami storm were really eye catching. Your Marathon videos brought back loads of memories. Safe home.
Thank you for commenting Ronnie. Those storms were really cool to see. Glad you enjoyed the videos from this trip. 😊🎣
Well nobody can say you give up easily John but your timing to leave was spot on & you gave it your all to fish & bring us another video. So good of you to allow us into your family holiday time too. All was not in vain, that was a good size shark you landed & tagged. Thanks for sharing mate, Don from South Aust.
I certainly put in the effort didn’t I. 🤣🦈
Thank you for sharing your family time with us! I'm so glad you were able to go fishing in Miami! 🏖😎
Awesome nurse shark!
Thank you, we had a lovely time. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker I follow a UA-cam channel called Marc817 who makes underwater vids of the great free diving areas in the east coast of South Florida. They are short and family friendly. I hope you and the fam will check them out because he snorkel/free dives the places I go when I am over there.🏖😎
You might fall down the crack 😂 brings to mind the London Underground warning, ‘Mind the gap’
Great catch tag and release on a very nice nurse shark 👍
Thanks mate. 😊👍🏻
Thank you so much for allowing us to share your holiday experience, what a wonderful finale, man-trap narrow grating, fabulous nurse shark and spectacular lightning. Hope you all had a great time, certainly memorable!
It is our pleasure. I have created a longer Vlog style video of the whole trip. It might be up next week.
You persevered on this one, and it paid off with another tagged shark! Well done, John.
I’m really glad I stuck at it. 👍🏻🦈
Well done John another blinder, I have hated Sundays my entire life but you know what? I bloody love em now Thankyou ever so much for the effort and time out on yer jollies and thanks again fella
My pleasure mate. To be honest I haven’t cared what day it was for the last 18 years. Since I left school every day has been a potential work day. I just get annoyed when I want to get stuff done and no one’s working because it’s Sunday!!!
@@TheFishLocker hahahahahha Good Lad!
I haven't finished the video yet but I'm so happy that you've come to our shores to vacation and fish. It distresses me however, that we have gained a reputation for being an unsafe place to visit. I wish you didn't feel that way, but I understand your feelings. Unfortunately, our reputation around the world has been tarnished because of the gun violence that is reported with so much sensationalism. Your comments about being fearful of your daughter and wife walking around at night made me sad. Also, the irrational statement by the Fish and Wildlife officer that you might be injured on the small "pier" that you were fishing from. Your concern that he had a gun also made me angry and sad that you were made to feel that way. I wish you and your family well and despite it all, hope your visit was an enjoyable one. By the way, you have one of the most enjoyable channels on UA-cam!
It wasn’t by reputation, the first day walking down the street I realised what the place was like. I have travelled to and served in some pretty bad places and miamis south beach has the potential to be violent and dangerous to women on their own. It didn’t stop us enjoying our time there. We just behaved accordingly.
@@TheFishLocker Good job. I'd be scared to death in a pasture full of cattle - I'd have no way of knowing how to read them, and no way to know how to stay out of danger. People are no different - you can get into trouble is you're in the wrong place at the wrong time. On the other hand, I live a few hundred yards from a big city, and I feel perfectly safe here. Most trouble is local, but outsiders have to be on the safe side.
While much worse with gun violence than most places, the way it's portrayed and the way people perceive it is rarely in line with reality. Being worried about random gun violence in the US is about as rational as worrying about being struck by lightning.
Nice to see you finally got to a mark that produced that wonderful shark, in the dark as well. Held your nerve in that lightening storm till the right moment.👍
Well done mate, great video.i
Timed it just right. 🌩🦈
Another brilliant video ...cheers Again for taking us along appreciated all the best marra 😃👌
Any time bud. 😊👍🏻🦈
Fishing in Florida is always fun because you always catch beautiful reef fishes very colorful im glad you are having fun fishing my country great video as always
We have loved it here. 💙
You can just tell your son is going to turn out a proper little gentleman👍👍
He makes us so proud. 😊
Nice Nurse shark catch, tag and release, done your bit there. An amazing light show at the end of the video. Thanks for sharing as usual John. All the best.
Cheers bud, aye them lightning storms are something special aren’t they.
Thank you for great videos on your holiday as well.look’s lovely there all the best mate
It’s a brilliant idea having the rod holders built in to the pier itself. Would love to see them over here.
Me too. Their main piers are well set up too. Cleaning stations, taps, bins the lot.😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker that is another great idea. They really do think about the fisherman its great to see that. Although even if we did have all that here you can guarantee that a select few would still leave rubbish around
Your smile is worth watching .the fish are second .New sub .😊
Thank you very much and welcome. 😊👍🏻
Awesome video, John! I’m sure I’m not the first to suggest this, but the surfcasting off Montauk, New York is world class - as well as fishing “the race” between Long Island sound and Block Island Sound. Really diverse fishery and only 2 hours from NYC! Thanks again
Sounds interesting. 😊👍🏻
I love that little fish💥💥
He was a cutie
Nice catch and tag/release John. Some lovely coloured fish species. Plenty of lightning too!! Tight lines buddy.🎣🎣🎣🎣🐟🐟🐠🐠
Really glad I could get a tag in a good fish. 👍🏻🦈
Hello John. Loving all these USA videos. Just shows how different fishing is around the world but at the same time how similar it is in the rigs and tackle that have success. All the best.
I love trying new places and learning new methods.
really enjoying your holiday, can't wait to get back to visit my pals in Florida!
I hope the weather is good to you when you do. 😊👍🏻
Another great video! Need you to start bass fishing and other freshwater fishing now! Love your American vids! Cool view of someone that doesn’t live here!
We plan to visit and fish in more places in the US on our next visit. 😊👍🏻
Greetings from Ocala Florida. That's a great spot to fish. A few years ago I was fishing there on that jetty and had my tackle box open on the rocks. I was fighting a barracuda and tripped over my tackle box and all my tackle and lures went deep between the rocks. Completely unreachable lol. Lost 95% of my tackle that day and above all the damn fish broke me off. That second spot you went to is always epic. Keep up the great content! Thanks for everything you do 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐠🦈🦈🦈🦐🦀🦞🦀🦞🦐🦈🐬🐋🐳🐟
What a nightmare!!! I’ve seen folks do the same thing with their tackle boxes too. 😫🤦🏻♂️
John, super enjoyed this series in Florida! Love your video's as always. Happy Anniversary to you and your wife!
Thank you very much. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker late happy anniversary to you both i enjoy your videos keep up the great work
Wise man, should not allow your wife and daughter to go alone for a walk. You guys should all walk together at any time. Stay safe and enjoy your holiday.
Haha.. barely missed that storm! Nice catch, tag and release! And as always.. can't wait for the next one.
Next video is a full Vlog of the whole trip.
@@TheFishLocker can't wait.. glad you're still safe and sound.
Everything has been covered, so I'll come straight to the point, loved the video John.
Glad you enjoyed it my friend. 😊👍🏻
Another great video john, always a pleasure to watch your blogs . Beautiful fish , I didn't realise how big that shark until you put your hand on his head
That’s why I did it mate. To give it some bearing. That was a good 70-80lb fish.
FYI "sunrise to sunset" fishing spots are more of a 'Get there before sunset". i havent seen anyone combing a walking path in the dark kicking people out, ever. they also dont lock the gates if there is one. they just 'Dummy' lock it by warping a chain around it that has a lock on it for show. worst case, they can ask you to leave, thats it. happy fishing!
That’s what I thought. I would just claim ignorance and leave if asked. 👍🏻
Magnífico video como siempre, gracias
My pleasure. 😊👍🏻
I'm enjoying these Florida videos what a place mate 👍
Thanks Jack. We had an amazing time. 😊👍🏻
Absolutely buzzing for you just watching it mate!👍💪🤣🤣
I hope you enjoy it. 😊👍🏻
You are feeling the same way I felt , fishing in the UK , when I was there,, I'm always wishing you good luck,
Thank you Ray. 😊👍🏻
Beautiful fish well done and the shark was gorgeous
The big nurse was a beauty wasn’t it.
Thank you once again for a great fishing endeavor ... May God continue to bless you and your family.
Thank you Peter and take care. 😊
Thanks John! I hoped you enjoyed your time in Florida! Next time come to the Cayman Islands 🇰🇾, you would love to fish here! 🎣
We will look into that for next year. 😊😊
It was like being on holiday with you ,thanks all
I am glad you enjoyed joining us Dave. 😊👍🏻
Epic mate! Well done.
Thanks bud. 👍🏻
Another brilliant one John!
It's like if James Cameron did a fishing film. Lighting, Sharks and weird unknown fish. 🤣🤣🤣
That was epic.
Cheers for cheering my Sunday up before I go back to work at 5am. 👍👍
P.s don't fall down any cracks. 🤣🤣
Haha. I think Mrs FishLockers cooking will keep me from falling through any of those cracks. 🤣
I've loved every bit of your holiday the only thing I didn't like is the fact I wasn't there 🤣 its been just brilliant mate to watch. That lightning was so awesome I love it when it's like that. Brilliant as always John mate top class. All the best tight lines 🎣🎣🎣
Cheers mate. Glad you enjoyed the video. 😊👍🏻
When I was stationed in Florida it rained 3pm everyday. It felt good lol
Weather you can set your watch to. 😉
Never thought I'd hear The Fish Locker say 'What is that...?!?!'....😆👍
Haha. I knew it was a type of boxfish just not the specific species. 🤣
I also love making fishing videos and really enjoy your content!! Great video!! 🤝🤝
Thank you.
Great vid, really enjoyed it. Interesting about using mullet for bait, must admit ive not used it yet but will give it a go. Nice one on your catch 👍
It’s a great bait.
Out to florida for couple of months soon so appreciate the heads up. Great recording.
I hope the videos were useful. 👍🏻
WONDERFUL video! Lighting and all.
It's nice to see you tagging fish so we can get info about them. It's as important as you notching the lobsters tails.
Glad you and the family enjoyed your trip to Florida. Let's not make it the last trip to our shores. So enjoy your videos on fishing in other locations.
By the way, did you find out what type of fish you caught in the first clip? Eagerly awaiting your next video. Thanks.
I believe it is a type of Cowfish. 👍🏻🎣🐟
Beautiful park, hope your family had chance to go up to the lighthouse, great view from the top.
They did. It was wonderful. 😊👍🏻
That first one was a Cowfish. Pretty area. Cool video. Thanks.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. 😊👍🏻
Nice job tagging that nurse shark 😀👍🏻🐟
Thank you. 😊👍🏻
Always on the fish mate great stuff
Effort = Reward mate.
Well done John
Thanks mate.
Great catch 👍👍👍👏👏👏
Thank you.
Great vlog again take care all👍❤️😊🇫🇷🇫🇷
My pleasure Albert. 😊👍🏻
Another cracking video 👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻 ⛈⛈⛈
Thank you. 😊👍🏻
Great video great thunder storm great nurse shark 🦈
Thanks James. 😊👍🏻
The mangrove snappers are spawning July-August which they do off shore. They will be coming into shore as soon as the weather cools down in proper numbers. They are the most consistent fish to catch near shore. I live one hour north of you in Coral Springs in North Broward county. We have a couple of piers but like I said not much of a variety in salt water at this time of year. What I have here in the fresh water is snake heads, knife clown fish, peacock bass, tilapia, mayan chiclids which all are biting this time of year. These all can be caught in the middle of the day even though it is hot.
Those freshwater fish sound like something I would love to fish for!!!
@@TheFishLocker the fight is crazy, if you ever had a chance to catch bass, that was the time man. they fight so much for thier size, they are super scrappy and full of fight almost everytime, specially those peacking bass in floridia (still a species to knock off my personal list).
Great video as always!! I see some twonk has made a video of how much your channel earns, I personally think you have the best uk fishing channel on UA-cam 👍 the knowledge you give us is priceless.
There’s always some pest trying to make money off the back of someone else’s hard work. 🤷🏻♂️
The,weird looking fish with the tiny mouth and horns is a "cow fish"💙💚💜.....too cute!!!! I have only seen one in a fishing game before, lol! 😁😁😁
Cool looking fish wasn’t it. 😊👍🏻
What an absolutely awesome shark, great to see you salvaged a right beast out at the end.
Fall down the crack 😭😆😆 oh my days.
Effort = Reward. 👍🏻🦈
Well done John. Persistence pays off. You could have made your case to fish on the pier if there were no "Postings". Most DNR's are really cool so long as you're legit, as you are. He would have had to give me a really good and feasible reason to leave if nothing was posted. Either way I'm happy you got your shark in good form!!
I just didn’t want to cause any drama. 😊👍🏻
Top adventure again mate, that storm was crazy, and am loving the tag and release programs going on😎😎😎
It needed that rain as it was really sweaty. 😊👍🏻🌩
Another tagging opportunity, what great luck! Yeah, be careful out there with lightening strikes! As they say, everything's bigger in Texas, but that could easily apply to the entire US, everything's bigger, including lightening storms, and especially in FL.😁👍✌
Exciting storm. 👍🏻🌩
John: Now what is that?
Me: That is adorable! 🥰
Haha. It was wasn’t it. 💙
Well done on that Shark 👍🦈🦈
Thank you. 😊👍🏻🎣
Great vid 👌 👍
Thanks Ian. 😊👍🏻
Great vlog. 6:43 I can see a classic thunderstorm cloud in the distance.
Crazy aren’t they. 🌩
Good work on the shark 👍
Thanks Mike. 😊👍🏻
Excellent thanks
Glad you enjoyed it Jon 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker I certainly did. Take care
That first fish I think it's a scrawed cowfish .
Absolutely stunning colours in the water..
You caught some great fish there especially that nurse shark! hope you guys are having a great time 🍻
Thanks mate. Aye there was a few nice ones in there. 😊👍🏻
This made me a little home sick. I miss those lighting storms.
Exciting arent they 😬🌩
Cracking nurse shark John that pulled back alright 😉
👍🏻🦈
love your videos...
Thank you very much Sam. 😊👍🏻
massive problem with iguanas over there cracking vid again john
Cheers Paul. 😊👍🏻
What we'd give in Wigan for those cool Miami temperatures 🤣
Another quality video mate.
Thanks Matt, take it easy bud. 👍🏻
What a great holiday! I found a big nurse shark like that sleeping in coral when I was snorkeling in Tobago. By far the biggest fish I've ever come across. I tried to get my missus to come and "look what I've found" but she wasn't having it!
The first fish is a scrawled cowfish, a boxfish with horns like a highland cow.
I don’t know how I’d feel swimming with them. 🤣🦈
Hey John, I'm sure some has already commented, I haven't read all the comments, but from experience that "horny*" fish is a Scrawled Cow Fish.
It seems you and the family had a wonderful time away, look forward to seeing you fishing in the UK again.
Thanks for the weekend entertainment. 😊 All the best.
Thanks Frank. 😊👍🏻
Awsome video 👍🤘
Thank you.
I called the cowfish so my memory serves me well, tremendous john mate🐟👍
Good on ya mate. 👍🏻
Had my money on a shark or a ray for your night fish. NIce catch. One of my favorite locations is the Skyway Bridge Pier in Tampa bay. It goes out 3 miles. Plenty of bull sharks in the bay. Fishing in Florida is just incredible.
How big do the Bull sharks get in that location? I’d love to catch a big bull shark,im can imagine they put up a hell of a fight.
I would love a big bull shark!!! 👍🏻🦈
@@matty6848 Bull sharks get up to 13 feet. The biggest one I've seen in the bay was about 10 feet. Saw a guy catch one shore fishing the Courtney Cambell Causeway. I think he was about 8 feet.
Love your videos, I fish alot living 9n the wast oast of Vancouver Island
We hope to fish there one day. 😊👍🏻
Nice video! I lived in Miami for three years. If you get a chance try fishing the canals. Loaded with fish!
If we return I will do that!!
Aquí en descanso Buenos días mí amigó bendiciones para tí y que hermoso pes 💚💚💚💚🇨🇷
Thank you and have a peaceful day. 😊
Very nice and very good
👍🏻🎣
Congratulations on the nurse shark.
Thank you Thomas. I was really happy about it. 😊👍🏻
Love this video and the incredible fish! The crack issue was probably to cover themselves from a lawsuit if God forbid you tripped.
What a world we live in. 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Hello again my friend.
Nice Nurse ya got.
Maybe one day in the future you can be up around my neck of the woods so I can show you some fishing spots and techniques I've used and showed hundreds of people how to use over the last 40 years.
That is if I'm not on a charter.LOL.
SO many good inland fishing spots for huge fish that people just don't take advantage of...or know of.
CHEERS
I would really enjoy that. 😊👍🏻
Hey John, nice vid. At 4.00 it looks as if that fish has been graffitied ...haha
It was a cool looking fish wasn’t it. 🤣
Yet another awsome vid of fishy fish and no submerged vehicles on the beach!!
Haha. It’s because I’m not a moron.
@@TheFishLocker I know!! Lmfao! I’ll let you know if I ever find out what happened… to all 3 this weekend that davey jones tried to take!
I would suggest bait type and presentation is huge. In South FL. Live Shrimp, and Squid work best.
Thank you
Smashing upload again John, by the way, you need to fatten out a bit if you could have fallen in that crack!!! Regards to the family, greetings from Cyprus
Haha. Lord knows how I’ve survived this long without falling down some crack to my death. 🤣
one of my school buddies lives in miami ,, hes always saying hes having breakfast on the beach ..jealous ...(YES)
Grass isn’t always greener mate. 😉
Amazing video! I cant work out from your smile in the morning there if it is a bigger smile than when you are back home going fishing 😀 and In no way shape or form do I mean this derogatory but your wifes tattoo on the back of her leg is amazing I've never seen a tattoo like that loving the videos learn something new most days so thank you
We all had a wonderful time in Florida. Hannah really likes her tattoo, I don’t have any. Too much of a wimp.
@@TheFishLocker I'm scared of being out at sea lol we all wimps somewhere ha 🤣
I would quiet happily see how many species i could catch ......that is a wonderfull place ...
It really is isn’t it. 😊👍🏻
Awsome job mate, I had to laff at how high you where sat in that hire car though haha, booster seat or what. I suppose they all do that in cinema world. Really awesome your doing florida. Where's next?
I think they’re used to everyone being short. 🤷🏻♂️
