Sometimes the Algo bestows upon me a gift and this was one for sure. I've seen Al live several times over the decades and I've listened to his albums and whatever oddities I could find but this is the first time I can recall an out and out cover of someone elses song. The fact that it's a Devo cover is perfect too. Thanks for sharing :)
After viewing Al's video "Dare to be Stupid", Mark was heard to loudly exclaim: "Expletive! He did Devo better than Devo!" I wouldn't say Al did "Girl You Want" better than Devo, but he sure did as good. I'd have a hard time telling them apart.
Interesting that this is only recently starting to pop up in people’s recommendations, seeing as there’s only 2 comments from around the time this was originally posted. This cover was fantastic
@@tmbjon I have no idea. Maybe the two recent live performances had something to do with it? I’m just a big Devo fan so I guess I was gonna see this regardless only a matter of time lol
The problem I have is that during the intro my mind puts the one in the wrong place. i hear those first two eighth notes as pickups that start on the 4 of the bar and the low quarter note that follows as being on the one. But that's not correct - the whole pattern actually starts on the one. So when the drums start I'm hearing him hitting snare on the one and the three when it's actually on the two and the four as in a normal 4/4 backbeat. It doesn't straighten out in my head until the first verse; then I'm good for the rest of the song. :)
@@hubbsllc I'm not a musician so I barely understand any of that. All I know is, from repetitive hearing I know where the lyrics come in. That's a big part of this cover's greatness. It forces you to listen to the beat, the whole beat, and nothing but the beat. Sometimes I like it better than the Stones' original that is built around that opening hook.
@@hubbsllc I got my Devos confused! I was binging Devo videos the other day, saw your comment today responding to mine, and completely forgot which video I had commented on! See what happens when you age ... 🤦🏿♂️😂 I still stand by my original comment on "Girl U Want". It's really hard for me to follow the beat.
This was shot in 2018 and I was way in the back. For the 2022 Vanity Tour I have better seats, but I promise to zoom in more for your satisfaction. Stay tuned, going to a bunch of shows in June.
@@The_OneManCrowd Thanks for correcting me on that. I knew that back in the day but I have devolved so much over the last 40 some years that I had lost that memory.
I'd honestly forgotten this song was by Devo in the first place. And now it'll be even harder to remember, because as we all know, Weird Al is more Devo than Devo!
His Mark impression is golden.
Man, imagine him using that on Dare To Be Stupid

Weird Al is an underrated genius. Dude can rock.
Who underrated him???? Do people go around underrateing bands and singers?
Totally True!!!!! Amazing
WELL done guys, I love DEVO, so i appreciate you doing them right.
Both a Devo and Al fan, so this works. I watch the Dare to be Stupid video often.
This is beyond cool, he hits that Mark vocal dead on.
Hell of a cover!!!
What a rare find! I LOVE coming across gems like this!🤘
It seems impossible to have a bad time playing a DEVO song
It *is* a Beautiful World...
I knew this was going to be awesome even before hitting play. Keyboard was not loud enough however.
Damn I didn't know how bad I needed this
This is such a great song, I love this!
Without my glasses on the drummer looks like "Sloth" from Goonies😆✌💛🤘

Nailed it.
You mean like... ua-cam.com/video/LhL8Sl3dWl8/v-deo.html ...?
This tour was great. Saw him in Chicago 🤙
I thought he was going to make a parody out of it. Like, "I'm going to hurl, I'm going to hurl....Maybe not....
Too difficult - the song is already a parody of itself....
This is brilliant!

I've been trying to figure out why it's suddenly getting dozens of comments. Is it linked somewhere?

Or who knows about the performances affecting it really because some of these comments are months old
I first heard this song from the Soundgarden cover , now Weird Al did it!!
Robert Palmer did a cover of this song if you can believe that.
The boi tore it up!
I grew up on this shit...thought you were going to be a muppet...you kicked arse 100%..thanks for that.
That’s awesome.
thank you for sharing!
Made My Day ! Awesome
Pretty good but I can’t hear the keys.
Radical!!
WOW!!!
How often does Weird Al do direct covers?
That was the interesting thing about this tour. He did a straight cover every night as an encore.
@@belugatoons Aah, thanks for the info!
In case it wasn't clear, they played a different cover at every single show.
I love this song even thought its rhythm is almost impossible to follow!

@@JohnDrummondPhoto "Satisfaction" was a Rolling Stones cover but "Girl U Want" was not. It was written by Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh.

Check out DEVO's slowed-down "Tank Girl" version. That may help: ua-cam.com/video/BHRTf5Cz8as/v-deo.html

Pretty good cover
Holy hell...
Not bad....Now go listen to DEVO for the proper SPUDS experience
Badass Boss 🦇 Yet the other one is the best 😉
BETTER than the original.
Wow !
WE ARE DE-VO
Still daring to be stupid. From the best song Devo never wrote to actually doing one their songs.
Mark Mothersbaugh commented to the effect that he was resentful Al did it so effortlessly with Dare To Be Stupid.
Fukn awesome sauce. DEVO!
Makes me want to turn in my turban for a red stepped flower pot hat.
It's not a flower pot. It's an energy dome.
