  • Have you ever wondered what Travertine could look like around your pool, but you already have a cool deck (like ours) or just a plain concrete deck? I know, I think we’ve all had the thought, but we stopped in our tracks when searching the topic because no one has really shared if it’s even possible, let alone no demo.
When we first bought our home, we were so excited about having a pool. BUT there’s been a lot of maintenance done since then. Before I started sharing my Home & really documenting the process, we redid the pool interior. Previously, it was coated with plaster/painted, but it was peeling and a few years later we had a team add pebbletec.
Around the same time, we didn’t have a lot left in our budget to redo the pool deck, but we opted painting the cool deck at the very least. And keep in mind this wasn’t your regular paint, we did our research and added pool decking paint that should have lasted, but with Phoenix summers, nothing here survives overtime. So, I wasn’t really surprised.
Forwarding to a few years later, we are finally adding something more permanent. But just like you, I had the same questions, “Is it possible to add travertine on an existing concrete/cool deck with a 4-5” pool coping?”. I’ve scoured the entire internet, and it was really divided until I saw a picture of a pool company that actually did it, and I was like, wait...hold my soda…this could actually work. It just took ONE picture to assure me that not only was it possible, but it could look good.
While my go-to is to DIY a lot of things, this isn’t a project for a novice in my opinion. If your pool is shaped like mine with a million curves, put down your tools and find a team who can do it.
To adhere the travertine to the pool deck, we opted to use Sika Tile professional grade large & heavy tile mortar [follow the bag instructions for application directions].
    Main Supplies being used:
    • 6” x 6” x 1.25” Tumbled QDI Light Travertine
    • 12” x12” x 1.25” Tumbled QDI Light Travertine
    • 6” x 12” x 1.25” Tumbled QDI Light Travertine
    • 12” x 12” x 1.25” Tumbled QDI Light Bullnose Travertine Pool Coping
    • Sika 400 LHT PRO Set - white 50lb bag
    • Xcel Surfaces TPG Travertine & Paver Grout
    • 12” Hide Skimmer Lid Kit
Stumbling upon the ‪@hideskimmerlids‬ was truly luck! I didn’t even think about the pool skimmers until we saw it at the QDI. We ended up buying the 12” cover so it would be a perfect fit with our 12” travertine, and the team was able to work it in perfectly into the design. If you do consider the skimmer cover kit, they have great tutorial [step-by-step] on how it needs to be installed.
At the end we emptied the pool and got to cleaning the interior after the mess of it all. It didn’t look like swimming in it would be an option otherwise. But that gave us a good opportunity to give everything a good clean and seal the interior travertine tiles.
Now we are all set for the summer season, pool side.
