Good educational video. The binder clip trick is a good one I hadn't seen. A little piece of fishing line on it and you've got yourself quite the feeder.
Aquarium Crap-op I can't belive you asked me to unsubscribe from your tube ( I did ) after I gave bit of criticism. A professional response would have been better. People are going to say what they want to say. You gotta learn how to deal with that. You lost a subscriber. Good luck with your business and I hope to never see you on my recommended list again.
I've just started fish keeping and have been using a binder clip with dental floss attached to pull it out. Thank you for validating my whacko process!
Omg you saved my life. I couldn’t find any way on how to keep food after its place but I just realize that you can freeze it so thank you so much!!! I never knew how to sync anything so I was all he’s really scared and I didn’t know what to do so thank you for helping me.
Yup its a food source I really should use more (because I grow it) packed with vitamin A and vitamin C and a whole host of minerals ...got to bear in mind though that if it is store bought and you do remove the skin you will be losing alot of its nutritional goodness.
My ottos are eating the repashy now! For some reason they like the bottom scratcher. And I put blanched zucchini in just now and they ate it on the first try! I'm so happy my ottos will be happy in my tank and I can feed then appropriately. Thanks to you and Cory from Aquarium coop for helping me feed my Ottos.
Hi Rachel. Great vid. Getting back into aquariums and I find your I formation super helpful and straight to the point. Appreciate it much. Have a super one!
When I Blanche my zucchini and cucumber, it usually gets water logged enough that it sinks on it’s own then. I always buy from the farmers market so I know it’s safe for my fish. Does anyone know if fish prefer it raw rather than blanched and/or if boiling/ blanching too long has negative effects? I’m beginning to think I cook mine too long, my plecos devour it but my Cory’s aren’t huge fans. I’m wondering if they prefer less cooked possibly?
I bought a few otos and snails to help with an algae problem. They did a great job on the algae and the tank looks great. So I gave the fellas/gals some zucchini and they gobbled it in 2 days. I noticed however, that they were not spending much time on the glass and ornaments and basically full time crowding onto the zucchini (funnier than Hell). My question is...how often do I feed them veggies? I want them to be happy and plump but I also do not want them to ignore the algae from returning.
My plecos have do not eat any veggies. However I have not blanched or boiled. I was told I did not need too so I will try that now. IS there a better time in the day to feed them? Is it ok to put the veggies in during the day? Thank you
Great video as always Rachel. Blanched garden peas also a favorite.Even my top and middle dwellers have a picnic . I take off the skin and slightly crush the 2 half pods. They go crazy for it. I prefer to vary the diet of all my fish. FAB!
Thanks Rachel for the tips. I usually just use a spare air stone an push the veggie on to the part where airline would normally go, the air stone is heavy enough that it will sink.
Rachel I respect your opinion ! Can I use pvc for pleco caves even if they are sanded down To get rid of marks ? Thank you for being there hope you’re family is all better now Bruce
Rachel, do you find your shrimp like these? I've tried zuchini with several species, and only get a few that munch on it; even after leaving it in for a while. They go after spinach more, but really seem to prefer the microbes on decaying organic matter, as well as the algae in the tanks (and the shrimp pellets).
+Yeeeeaaaaaahhh!! Carrots are ok, but have a lot of natural sugar so you may get minor clouding of your water. Brussels sprouts (frozen) are one of my favorites. They sink when goid, then float when they need to be removed. Green beans are also great
I know about the pesticides on the skin but can you just wash it? My Botia Loaches usually eat the skin. I always wash it good, soak and rinse again. Do you think that is good enough or am I taking a chance?
I put a big slice of zucchini into my tank. My mystery snails LOVE them. I have 3 adults and a bunch of babies. I normally blanch, scrub and remove the peel as well. However i just let it float and watch as all the snails get on it and sink it. Quite interesting to watch them all march up the glass after it if they are hungry enough. 😁
One summer we grew zucchini... We were overrun! We had some the size of small watermelons and friends and neighbors trying to give us some too! I wish I had had the army of catfish you do so none of it was wasted
Hello Rachel, I’m new to Aquatics. Do you have any food suggestions for my Apple snails? I have 3 snails, one in each of my 3 tanks. I see them constantly roaming the tank...not sure if they’re looking for food. I’ve tried Algae chips, peas, green beans, bok choy. Also, I recently purchased organic snail pellet food and they ignore it! I’m concerned they’re not getting enough to eat. I guess if they’re “still around” then I assume they’re getting some nutrients. Thanks...
Thank you Rachel for this video. I just started feeding my bottom dwelling fish zucchini. I was unsure of the blanching process and you made it clear to me, thank you! I have 2 nerite snails....they never get to the zucchini in time :( Any suggestions on how to get the nerites a portion? Thank you so much and have a wonderful day!
Thanks Rachel, that was really helpful. have Otto Cats for the 1st time, and want to offer them something other than Algae wafers. Picked up zucchini today, so will see how they take to that.
Thanks for your informative videos, they help me a lot. I have some rummynose tetras with pretty small mouths, do i need to cut the zucchini small enough for them to swallow whole or can they bite off a bigger piece? thanks

Wow great information! I have pounds on pounds of zucchini that come from my family garden and it just so happens i ran out of algae wafers. Will deffs be doing this tomorrow being that algae wafers are not cheap!
+Dylan Becker algae wagers are also primarily fish meal (read the ingredients, the first four or so make up the bulk of the food and generally is gfish meal for most commercial algae wafers)
+Punky Pam I like to make curries, bake bread, and really anything fresh. My youngest is a vegetarian so we have some fun cooking together. No videos of my turtles
You are so right about the seeds i have fed zucchini and cucumbers to my plecos i would just cut them up and drop them in the tank on a fork i never thought to boil them and peel the skins and remove the seed but because the seeds look bad in tank i stopped feeding it to them and have been using the Tetra Pleco Wafers (with Zucchini) but I will try everything you showed in this video oh and did you say homegrown was better than store bought if so is it ok to use store bought if thats your only option
Hey Rachel it was so good to have you here at Gsas! I enjoyed every bit of it, we didn't had much time to connect , I was gonna ask you about invertebrates but then called to stage - ring a bell? Love you
for everyone in the rest of the world wondering WTF a Zuchini, WELL it is a courgette unless your in In Britain and Ireland a fully grown zucchini is referred to as a marrow. (many names for the same plant )
to add to this, avoid overblanching. I fed zucchini to my various plecos a lot, i would boil it for up to 5 minutes at a time because i was new and didn't know i was overdoing it. As soon as the plecos touched it, it would fall apart and make a mess. I mean, they ate it, so it wasnt an issue, but it was a big mess.
Love your channel - Im trying to talk my partner into getting me a room dedicated to my 9 tanks - which are causing humidity problems in the house as they are parked in a spare bedroom. Im just learning but love the whole fish thing - everything about it. Ive had some rather expensive mistakes, and some tragic losses - but they were all my own fault. I would love to talk to someone about fish fish and more fish - I live in New Zealand. How did you set up your room? Are all your tanks the same size? How did you get started? Oh so many questions, so little time :)
our pleco likes the seeds and the skin on zucchini the most and leaves the rest there o-O the angelfish likes the softer part and so do the gouramies we have, the cory's dont seem to go at it very much but i dont stalk them all night xD
Just an FYI because a lot of people are unaware of this, but ... zucchini, summer squash, corn and many other veggies at the grocery store are more likely to be GMO than not! I know most people think that fresh veggies is the last place they'd have this happen, but it's actually the most common. You're so lucky to live where you live because, unless you're a big time farmer, you're guaranteed that the seeds you buy, are not GMO. So keep letting those neighbors fill you up with zuc! It's better for you and your fish and that crazy chicken of yours!
The majority of scientists agree that GMO is completely safe. Hell, some countries have to approve them on a case-by-case basis anyways, so it's not like people are going around all willy-nilly inserting random genes into corn and wheat. Infact, "GMO" is technically a bit of a misnomer. Essentially ALL the food that you eat is genetically modified (though not in the modern, laboratory way). Even the "organic" food. This is because the majority of our food doesn't exist in the wild (at least not in the form we're used to; ever see wild corn or wild bananas?), and have been bred over thousands of years to what we know and love. This selective breeding is genetically modifying the plants, with the main difference being it took 10,000 years instead of 10 years and wasn't done in a lab by a bunch of highly intelligent academic biochemists. In fact, there is evidence of transgenicity in sweet potatoes (Kyndt et al, 2015), which contain Agrobacteria; making sweet potatoes a "natural GMO." Oddly enough, Agrobacteria is also one of the main ways they introduce new genes into plants. If you are pointing out GMO due to pesticides, note that organic farms use pesticides as well. If they didn't, your fruit and vegetables would have holes in them. Also note that GMO crops are/can actually be a GREAT thing for people. Rice with more Vitamin A, beef without horns (to prevent injury), fish that grow all year, pigs that produce less phosphorous in their poop (Less algae blooms in lakes killing fish), crops that resist drought leading to higher availability for those in harsh climates, plants that are resistant to once fatal diseases (I bet those that were alive during the potato famine would've LOVED to have GMO potatoes), et cetera. Also, unless the seed packet says, "GMO free", I would not say it's guaranteed that they aren't GMO. Sorry for the rant lol. Just trying to clear a few things up. Lots of people (I'm not saying you) hear GMO and freak out, thinking it's the worst thing ever, but it has been one of the greatest advances in technology since the space race. Again, I'm not attacking you at all, just wanting to point some things out. I'd be more worried about things like oxalates or goitrogens, levels naturally in the foods (which COULD lead to things like goiter and kidney stones if taken in large enough amounts- the reason why parts of the rhubarb are inedible.). Not that it's a big issue, just something probably more important to watch for than where the seed came from. Okay, I'm done now hahaha. Sorry for the essay! Love the videos Rachel! Very informative!
Massive fish die offs with suspected pesticide soaked zucchini from the store... I wonder what that would do to humans over a period of time considering the disproportionate masses? I rarely buy organic, but I do contemplate it ;-)
There are lots of ‘organic’ pesticides that are bed for humans. Also, things that are poisonous to some animals, aren’t to other... thus we enjoy chocolate, and dogs can’t even have a little. Either way, you should ALWAYS wash your vegetables. They grow from poop and dirt, and get handled but dozens of people
I do pest control here. Organic farms use straight pesticide. No "natural" stuff because it doesn't work. Most pesticides will not affect humans unless you're ingesting a lot of it. Fish are much smaller and more sensitive than a human. I also highly doubt that the zuchini is what killed your fish because pesticides won't sit on the plant, If the chemical was systemic then sure, maybe, but it's more of action is to become a part of the plant itself and the chemical doesn't break down
Hi Rachel, I would be cautious of using metal clips, since they tend to rust when left in the water for long times. Just thought you might want to know :)
Cucumbers at times causes some snails to die off after it clouds the water other times it doesn't. I only put a thin slice and it can still make an impact. Zucchini looks like a good alternative.
Great pic! XD Here in Eastern KY the zucchinis are going nuts as usual--possibly worse due to all the rain/humidity--& people are frantically throwing their extras at one another. My ottos do love the zuccs but whoa, the day I introduced a cucumber slice! Tiny vegetarian piranhas. They eat seeds, flesh, skin, whatever. o__@ I make little War of the Worlds tripod things using thick slices & bamboo skewers...as ottos enjoy a nice nap between snacks they line up on the open stretches of skewers like kids waiting for a ride at Disneyland. The only trouble I've had is some cloudiness in the water that shows up overnight--zuccs are worse about it than cucumber--& ruins my pretty shimmering water. I don't know if it's because it's a 10-gallon or what. :/ The skewers are odd enough for weirding up my aquascape...but I feel like I've got to put up with it cause those kids gotta eat a healthy diet! Algae wafers can't be the freshest thing ever & i don't want them feeling anxious over not having enough real algae to share...sigh.

I put a 1/2-3/4 slice of zucchini with the skin on in the MICROWAVE for about 30 seconds. I feel that boiling it removes much of the nutritional value. Slice it into quarters (not slicing the skin) and then sink it in tank using plant weights. All my fish seem to love it. Plecos, tiger barbs, ghost shrimp etc.
Alright good info, I use cucumber, green beans, an watermelon but melon clouds water a little. But I just let them eat a day or so then remove whts left..Happy fishing guys.
Thanks so much about the tip with the skin on grocery purchases, as I now believe that may be what what killed my otherwise acclimated and healthy Ottos earlier this year. I won't make that mistake again.

and a very small hook on the end of that fishing line helps.
so blanch then freeze? or is freezing an alternative to blanching? not very clear on that point. Love the video by the way.
Blanch to kill bacteria, freeze to preserve
Zucchini planks are also handy for trapping pest snails: I put one on the substrate at night, and by morning I just pull it out covered in snails.
Tip of the day.

+Jessica Cook I blanch them first
Hi Rachel! Looking good today! Thank you for another video. Non related question, do you keep tetras?
Im so happy i found this tip! I give my snail cucumbers and it absolutely loves them
Rachel I respect your opinion !
Can I use pvc for pleco caves even if they are sanded down
To get rid of marks ? Thank you for being there hope you’re family is all better now

yes of course you can. they work well, you may need end caps as well
Thank you for that pic of you being attacked by the Zuccs!! It made me laugh!
+pia a hahah, my eldest daughter abby helped with that!
Do u feed any veggies beside peas to ur Betta?

Ok thanks for responding. Unfortunately here in South India even Brussels Sprouts aren't common. I'll just find some cucumber, it is abundant.
do you blanch before you freeze?
+Brian Scheuermann yes
Cool. Thanks Rachel!
The binder clip tip is genius!!
I know about the pesticides on the skin but can you just wash it? My Botia Loaches usually eat the skin. I always wash it good, soak and rinse again. Do you think that is good enough or am I taking a chance?

If you. Boil the vegables would it get rid of the cemicles or not
Hello Rachel,
I’m new to Aquatics. Thanks...
Look up snail jello. It's made of baby food and gelatin and is super easy to make and then portion so you are not overfeeding
Thank you Rachel for this video.
I just started feeding my bottom dwelling fish zucchini. I was unsure of the blanching process and you made it clear to me, thank you!
I have 2 nerite snails....they never get to the zucchini in time :(
Any suggestions on how to get the nerites a portion?
Thank you so much and have a wonderful day!

I was looking forward to seeing them eat
there is any need to cook them before in boil water ?
I have a really Important question Rachel, can I keep a florida gar in a well filtered 140 gallon tank? (It was always a fish I dreamed for keeping)
+Bob's Dank Tanks depends on the dimensions, bigger would be better. They are very rigid and have a hard time turning, which can lead to them breaking their backs or beaks in tight quarters
I may get one custom built so it would be low but long and wide. Thanks for the advice!
I had forgotten how hilarious the thumbnail for this video was 😂😂😂
how did you forget when you had just clicked on it?

Wait... turtles?! Make some turtle videos! That would be awesome
Hi Rachel! Can any Freshwater fish, Ghost Shrimps or Snails eat Zucchinis or Cucumbers? I've never heard of this..
Quick question
How in the world do you keep shrimp tanks clean
Thanks! ... not sure if you would know the answer to this but I have a green phantom and get so many mixed messages about what to feed him.... he loves the zucchini and is almost exclusively what he will actually eat(or what I see him eat). Lately I’ve been trying to stick some higher protein algae wafers to it as I put that in. Any other suggestions?
They are an aufwuch grazer, you might try applying repashy soilent green or bottom scratcher to a wood surface to feed it.

Turtles, and chickens and fish...oh my!
Tracy S don’t forget the sauce
Any worry about the binder clip closing on the fish when they're eating the stuff in between?
nah, they soften and it just gradually closes
Where I come from, we never left our houses and cars unlocked at harvest time, people piled in the zucchini and you can only freeze so much of it.
😂
In the UK we call them courgettes and my pleco's love the skin but I never blanch it .They also love squashed frozen pea's love you vid's 👍👍👍

Organic farms still use pesticides... It's just usually natural pesticides, rather than the synthetic types used in large scale farming.
yeah, because it affects one organism in a particular way means it will affect another in the same way :) quack quack
I also highly doubt that the zuchini is what killed your fish because pesticides won't sit on the plant,
If the chemical was systemic then sure, maybe, but it's more of action is to become a part of the plant itself and the chemical doesn't break down
@@brefstank8398 organic farms use the same pesticides. They're just diluted down more
This was such an awesomazing tip! Thanks!
Hi Rachel, I would be cautious of using metal clips, since they tend to rust when left in the water for long times. Just thought you might want to know :)
+Hana Sophia they are stainless and not in there long enough for it to be an issue
I just got an albino Ancistrus and I was wondering what to feed it
Helpful video thank u looking forward to see more how would I feed the frozen veg and what is the process can u do a video on that please
zucchini is a favorite of all my livestock. especially the shrimp. they can't get enough of it.
Cucumbers at times causes some snails to die off after it clouds the water other times it doesn't. I only put a thin slice and it can still make an impact. Zucchini looks like a good alternative.
I got a clown Pelco and I needed this video
Love your vids and tanks your endlis are the reason I bought mine but besides that Awesome vid
I love to cook also. You could show us some stuff that's your speciality. Id enjoy it!!
I love your videos. I hope your well . ❤️
Do minnows eat it too?
+John John not as readily as some fish, but yes

I have tinfoil ,goldfish and dollars what can I feed them before I feeded goldfish with cucumber and it died
+Mustafa Sayyed make sure you scrub the skin
I put a 1/2-3/4 slice of zucchini with the skin on in the MICROWAVE for about 30 seconds. I feel that boiling it removes much of the nutritional value. Slice it into quarters (not slicing the skin) and then sink it in tank using plant weights. All my fish seem to love it. Plecos, tiger barbs, ghost shrimp etc.
Alright good info, I use cucumber, green beans, an watermelon but melon clouds water a little. But I just let them eat a day or so then remove whts left..Happy fishing guys.
Racheal can i give zucchin for Otocinclus affinis to?
+Heide Weg yep!
Chickens? Turtles? what other animals you possibly have other than fish? I'd love to see more! :-)

Why thank you 😂
I'm gonna try this with pumpkin for my pumpkin shrimp.
I love the clip idea for sinking the veggies! Thanks!
Thanks so much about the tip with the skin on grocery purchases, as I now believe that may be what what killed my otherwise acclimated and healthy Ottos earlier this year. I won't make that mistake again.
