Hello! Thanks for sharing these stories! I lived in Korea for 2 years and I'm also a black woman so it's interesting hearing new perspectives and situations to see how things are changing (or not changing)...I have a separate question, though, about something you said in this video and your perspective on it. Around 2:27 you mention "your black girl energy rising" and you starting to get "irritated" and again "black girl energy intensifying" at 3:50. I'm just curious if those two things are connected to you? Is black girl energy irritation/anger? I'm not trying to attack or say that you're racist or anything extreme like that. I'm just curious about those two being linked because it really stood out to me in this video and I know "the angry black woman" trope is something that doesn't often sit well with many black women. Again, please see this as curiosity and not an attack. I really appreciate seeing poc sharing their experiences and perspectives as they pursue their goals. Have a blessed day!
Hey! Thanks for your question. I didn’t see it as an attack or criticism at all- it actually got me thinking. When I mentioned those things I didn’t correlate them to the angry black woman trope in my mind, so I wasn’t purposefully referring to that. But in hindsight, it definitely looks like that to me. What I actually meant was that, yes I was getting more irritated with the unwanted attention, but I was also mustering the courage and strength to deal with the situation myself if necessary. So when I said “black girl energy intensifying” I was like talking myself up into a stronger mental space. Like the opposite of psyching myself out if that makes sense?
@@victoriaalexis021 I am an engineering undergrad one thing i am good at is deduction, also your voice is really great you should do some anime dubbing or something .

You were definitely not over reacting. I had the same experiences while I was in Korea. Men staring at me the entire time on the subway and a couple older men following me around.
When I lived in Italy last year I had went to a friends house and didn’t realize how late it had gotten so I ended up going on the train back to Rome around 11 PM. I was at the tram stop waiting on my tram and there was one other guy with me. It was dark and no one else was around. He asked me in Italian what the time was and I told him. And then he made a comment about how late the tram was trying to make small talk. I was a little on guard because my phone was dying and I had to check the time by using my iPad, and then I had some expensive beat by Dre headphones. He seemed to be coming closer and closer to me as the minutes ticked by and so I kept him in my peripheral thinking he may try to rob me. It looked like he was shaking something in his hand and I was wondering what the heck he was doing, but I did not look at him directly. Almost right before the train arrived I decided he was getting way too close for my comfort and I decided to turn and look back at him (he somehow got behind me) and he was jerking “something“ in his pants when I saw a wet spot form 🤮. It caught me so offguard and the train was literally rolling up and my sister also started calling me all at the same time. I tried to take a photo of him but he ran off into the tree line. That really messed me up and I no longer engage men in public even if they ask me the simplest of questions. I used to never understand why women would be rude to men when the men were just being nice, saying hi or greeting them. But now I know why. And now I’m that woman 😫.
Trust me I live in India, I know EXACTLY what you mean by "keeping track of someone". I am hyper aware of my surroundings if I see any sketchy behaviour..
No matter where you are in the world, you must always be aware of your surrounding and listen to that gut feeling. Sometimes you have to know when to back down. You did the right thing. It's just super frustrating that you had to go through that. :(
You can't look at them/lock eyes or they think it's an invitation. The only solution is to ignore them or move entirely away without locking eyes. I'm sure you know this by now lol but just saying it for anyone that sees it.
I’m glad you made it home safely. I’ve had so many similar issues with riding the subways/buses in Korea too that now, especially during peak drinking hours, I’m always on high alert 🙃 you definitely had a reason to be fearful because you never know. But loved the way you told this story time! The Jay walk killed me 😂
I'm South Korean and especially old Koreans may stare at you rudely more than a minute in the subway or in a bus. And I appreciate your effort making this video which generally glamorizing this small country. Because people from Southeast Asia could have a much harsher experience in South Korea.
I don’t understand, literally every female foreigner living in Korea with a youtube channel mention the creepy encounters with Korean men. They get followed home, groped, spiked in the club.. or just treated bad, like an object. yet everybody still says it’s safe? I don’t get it. I wanted to visit but after watching all those videos, I changed my mind. I’ve been in Bangkok, only 3 weeks so maybe too short to say something but let me tell you the Thai men were so incredibly polite, gentle and respectful towards women. Yes they were flirty too, but never ever inappropriate. I was hoping the men in South Korea were similar but the attitude they have towards foreign women seems to be a structural problem..
Hey! First of all I just want to say that you are drop dead gorgeous! I’m literally in love with your eyes 💛. Secondly, it’s sad that as woman we have to face things like this, however, I’m glad that you took this as an opportunity to learn and remove yourself from potentially threatening situations and do that all without any assistance, you’re really brave.
