    What a pain these lights are. I got through the two larger rings OK, but trying to put the small one back on was a royal PITA.. just couldn't get it on. SO frustrating, tried everything, pliers, screwdrivers, snap ring pliers with the tiny pointy ends.. Nothing but frustration... Then I thought I would try something different,, a box end wrench that fit over the end where the ring goes, 13 mm. fit over it without the ring, So I put the small ring on the nub where it is supposed to go, and then ran the wires through the box end wrench, and tried centering the ring with the wrench over the top of it, and pushed down hard, and about the second try pushing down on the ring with the 13mm box end wrench, the darn thing popped on. YAY.. I'm going to try that again on the next one that I do, which will be soon. I do think the snap rings with the wholes for the pliers look fine.. I might go that route next time..

    Dear Andy, I’m very sorry to learn that you’re struggling with health issues. I’m afraid I came rather late to the party, as it were, in discovering your channel, but know that the kindness and wisdom you’ve poured into your channel has allowed me to build the confidence to repair my own vintage machines, as well as encourage others to do likewise. Thank you for that. Moreover, with your help, I was able to repair and refurbish 401A’s, as presents, for both my mom and my sister, who are now - again, thanks to you - vintage Singer devotees. You’ve given me and my family a gift (of knowledge) that keeps on giving, and we’re all grateful. Another thought... I am so grateful to have learned from you that many antique and vintage machines run quietly and feel so smooth after a good cleaning and oiling. I brought my new 1919 Singer 128 hand crank to a quilting workshop last month. My sewing friend were surprised by how quietly it runs. Many of them think I have super mechanical skills, but I say no, and I tell them I learn a lot from your channel. Plus, the old Singer black straight stitchers are so easy. Thanks for giving me the confidence to service my old machines myself. It's so fun and rewarding. Take care. Andy, thanks from the bottom of my heart.

    Hi Andy, I just watched your latest UA-cam. I'm so sorry to hear you're leaving. I was just going to tell you how much oil my sewing machine is using. I sewed two waist packs out of cordura and my 503 started making a chirping sound. I finished my project and pulled the thread out and gave it a good listen. The chirp was coming from the top front of the machine. I started oiling and the chirp went away. I just oiled it about 6 months ago and thought it was going to be plenty. I went through oiling the whole thing and the motor hum went away and control was better and everything. So I guess every time I start a project from now on I'll lube the ol' girl. As always I have to say thanks for all the time and effort into your sewing machine videos. They are great studies of mechanical ingenuity through the years. So, thankyou very much. Ralph-

      A great comment, Ralph. ⭐ In more "modern" manuals like for the 503A, it just says oil "occasionally" and "periodically" kind of leaving it up to you. The manuals for the older models (think black finish) would say things like oil "regularly", "as used" and maybe the best insight was the one that stated, "if the machine is used every day then oil it every day". Most of the oiling points on the 503A do not have storage capacity. That's why the manual says "one drop of oil". If you washed the machine with Krud Kutter I would oil it for each project. Over time you'll notice it won't need as much. There is NO PLACE on the motor that needs oiling, period. The steel gears and Textolite gear on the handwheel can be greased less often as the grease tends to cling to those parts longer, but no need to slather them with grease, just a light coating. Your 503A will outlive you if taken care of so be sure to update your will. Thanks for saving the machine, Ralph, and happy sewing.

I have one of the small round, tube-like metal lights that is completely apart from together. Too afraid to tackle that one, maybe this will help my courage factor!
    P.S. Sewing machine lights is one of the only places I totally like LED lights. They burn out too often in the house, and a shop-light one nearly caught our garage on fire!

    A great video. Thank you!
    One has to wonder why Singer used three really strong steel snap rings to hold together a small Bakelite light fixture. Not one, not two, but three.
    Those snap rings are strong enough to hold down an aircraft carrier in a hurricane. Why in the world they decided that they needed that kind of fastener is one of those mysteries that I don't think I'll ever figure out.

    I have to teach myself to solder just about every time I solder. About every 2 years or so I might have a little soldering job. By then my tip is all oxidized and won't solder. Major cleaning, can't find my solder, connection between tip and iron oxidizes so now I need to replace the tip after trying to flux my tip. And on and on. When I finally get everything together and get the wire on there I put my stuff away for another year or two. Thanks Andy, not need to apologize for soldering skill or technique. Hi Andy. I much enjoyed seeing the insides of the light and how to rewire it. In the part “Install Ring Terms on Wire,” did you slip a piece of shrink wrap tubing over each half of the new wire before soldering (and then shrink appropriately it when done)? It looks like it to me. Just checking. My light does not need rewiring, but my motor wire will, at the least, need new ring terms, so I’m collecting the materials now for the motor wire. Also hoping you will show how you rewired your motor! I actually like the look of those new snap rings better than the original rings.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, it is a type of shrink wrap but just barely bigger than the wire insulation. It is really there for reinforcement and it shrinks to the wire insulation just from the heat of the soldering. I don't cover the soldering spot with shrink wrap. I don't show in the video, but I wrap the solder spot several times with colored thread ( red & yellow) for insulation and bind it with a drop of crazy glue so it won't unravel. I want that short span of wire before the ring to have reinforcement as that seems to be where all the wire insulation cracks and gets damaged.

      You did not see the unedited version 👀 I did forget to put the LED bulb in to begin with and had a good laugh at myself. That gave me the idea. Thanks for watching.

      The light is probably 50+ years old. I do not know of anyone making replacement parts like the springs. You'd maybe have an easier time making new springs than finding just the springs for sale on sites like eBay, Facebook marketplace, etc. You can find the entire used light for sale there though. It also fits some models 66 so it is advertised for that too. As mentioned in my video you can find NEW replica lights like this; www.ebay.com/itm/291984864494?hash=item43fba774ee:g:HCUAAOSw9EZZkasB The used ones sell for $20 to $50 so shop around if you decide to go that way; www.ebay.com/itm/265504499052?var=565311671481&hash=item3dd14d256c:g:F28AAOSwxbhh5I0K I believe the light is part #195289 if yours is like the one in the video, and the springs/holder is part #195349. "Spring contact & holder".

      For sure! My wife could not believe it when I put one on her machine the first time. Better light, less cost, and no heat.
