Lord and Taylor was just in a weird position as a retailer. Macy’s is almost as nice, while Nordstrom is just a little bit nicer. Both of those retailers have found ways to be successful in current times, and ate Lord and Taylor’s market. Macy’s has been moving slightly more upscale in their most successful stores, while Nordstrom is experimenting with lower-level luxury. This left no room for Lord and Taylor in the market.
Agreed. Lord and Taylor’s re emergence as a specialty boutique retailer may save the name and heritage. If they opened boutiques instead of full line department stores, they would probably capture new market share with millennials. But it only works if they stock their stores with new merchandise that you can’t find at traditional department stores. And they only need 1-2 stores per market this time, specifically in premier shopping districts. Suburban malls in the B-C category need not apply.
It seems department stores are a thing of the past, here in the UK the latest department store chain Debenhams is currently closing down. The Lord + Taylor sign outside the store I couldn't read well at all, very poor graphic design. But the stores interior was in great shape and the high quality fixtures seem very new based on some of the designs. I can see a few of those fittings looking good in an apartment.
The whole point of the logo, genius, was just that. So all you had to do was look at it and know it was a good, quality brand. It didn't matter if you knew what it said or not.
Honestly, COVID killed any chance of traditional departments stores making a comeback after the disastrous 2010s, only the high upscale ones and Macy's will survive in the future, the rest will go out this decade I hate to say. Anyhow, thanks for all the content you've made this year as always and hope you have a good 2021!
@@LostDepartments Of all of the non upscale traditional department stores, Macy's is pretty much in the best shape in all of them and could easily experience a turnaround with the right corporate decisions but we'll see what happens to them as the 2020s progress, And yes, I expect a lot of closures and possibly a few more chain liquidations in 2021 as the aftermath of COVID continues to wreck havoc among the retail community
All the Lord and Taylor’s in metro Detroit closed, the first at Fairlane in 2006, then Great Lakes Crossing, most recently Lakeside, and following is Twelve Oaks.
Loved this store too but half to admit I didn't buy much at this store until I was older because it was always overpriced. I'm happy you documented this place before it closed. Instead of trying to replace this store Woodfield should just expand its parking lot.
It was really tough.i remember the grand re opening after the Nordstrom wing opened in 1995.i wonder is their anyway Simon can convince VonMaur to move out of the former Charlestowne Mall location in St.Charles and come to Woodfield.
Sad thing is Nbc was getting Von Maur, but amc decided to take the space. What can happen is Von can build where macy’s was. That would be my dream. Unfortunately but also not, it’s at the glen. They can move to nbc with a bigger better location. Von Maur doesn’t build modern looking stores, their new ones still have those great features which is ultra rare now.
I would occasionally shop at Lord & Taylor in Manhattan on 5th Avenue. It was always flooded with tourists, mostly Asians. The goods were high quality but expensive. You might find something decent on sale. Almost everything was clothing and accessories. At Christmas they did have Santa but this really wasn't a store for children, but for older upper class women - the ladies who lunch crowd.
In my view Lord & Taylor's downfall became inevitable when it sold its iconic Fifth Avenue store to WeWork at the beginning of 2019. WeWork, seriously? Now Amazon will be using the building for offices.
You would think Amazon would find a more adaptable Midtown building for its offices. WeWork must be breathing a sigh of relief to get rid of this Turkey and its mortgage.
I wonder if Simon can somehow pursue and pursuade Von Maur to come to woodfield.you can’t tell me that it’s performing well at Charlestowne.this is I believe the perfect location in a still thriving mall.it has underground parking and rooftop parking can’t get better than this.
@@landontk7696 that mall I believe is in the middle of a pending sale by Brookfield.it’s turning into a dead mall quickly.the building of apartments on the former Macy’s has stopped due to the pandemic.
@@markmatuga2595 Uh, where did you find this? All I heard was the lender is wanting to sell the mall. Northbrook Court has 80 stores, and seems to be doing well, and it’s only going to get better during the holidays if this variant doesn’t get out of hand. And I’m glad the redevelopment stopped, they should just put a new anchor there, they don’t need a outdoor space, look at Woodfield.
Lord and Taylor was nothing special. It used to be a nice specialty store like Parisian, but its prices were way too high for the merchandise that could also be bought in Macy's with a coupon. Its store exteriors and classy font made middle class American feel like they were shopping at Saks but for less, but inside the clothes were frumpy, understocked, and just mismatched with what shoppers really wanted.

Bro, why do you have to reply the same thing you just said
I could actually see Bloomingdale's being interested in this space after the dust of COVID settles.

Lord and Taylor at least maintained their stores til the very end. Unlike some of their rivals...

If you keep making these awesome videos I will never get any work done around the house

Thank You!!! Macy's remains on shaky ground too. I'm expecting to see a lot more happening next year as the industry continues to spiral down.

@@ProspectElevators While it's a regional rather than national chain, Pennsylvania-based Boscov's is doing quite well.
Unlike the random Oriental Rugs that Sears and Macy’s have at liquidations, I can kinda see why Lord & Taylor and furs might go together.
Man... my other childhood mall Westfarms is gonna take a major hit from this.
Lord & Taylor did also expand a little into St. Louis but all those locations closed around like 2006

The Saint Charles one always seems healthy and they basically have no competition in what is a rich area. They could coexist if they wanted to.

I bought a striped turtle neck pull over here back in the early 90's and yes, it was overpriced.
