ABOUT JONATHAN LARSON:
Jonathan Larson was an American composer and playwright noted for exploring the social issues of multiculturalism, addiction, and homophobia in his work. Typical examples of his use of these themes are found in his musicals Rent and Tick, Tick... Boom! He received three posthumous Tony Awards and a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the rock musical Rent. Completed in 1991, was an autobiographical "rock monologue" entitled 30/90, which was later renamed Boho Days and finally titled tick, tick... BOOM! This piece, written for only Larson with a piano and rock band, was intended to be a response to his feelings of rejection caused by the disappointment of Superbia. For his work on Rent, Larson was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score; the Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Book of a Musical, Outstanding Music, and Outstanding Lyrics; the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical; the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical in the Off-Broadway category; and Obie Awards for Outstanding Book, Outstanding Lyrics, and Outstanding Music.
ABOUT tick, tick… BOOM!:
Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda makes his feature directorial debut with tick, tick…BOOM!, an adaptation of the autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, who revolutionized theater as the creator of Rent. The film follows Jon (Academy Award nominee and Tony Award winner Andrew Garfield), a young theater composer who’s waiting tables at a New York City diner in 1990 while writing what he hopes will be the next great American musical. Days before he’s due to showcase his work in a make-or-break performance, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere: from his girlfriend Susan, who dreams of an artistic life beyond New York City; from his friend Michael, who has moved on from his dream to a life of financial security; amidst an artistic community being ravaged by the AIDS epidemic. With the clock ticking, Jon is at a crossroads and faces the question everyone must reckon with: What are we meant to do with the time we have?
tick, tick…BOOM! stars Academy Award nominee & Tony Award winner Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp, Tony Award nominee Robin de Jesús, Tony Award nominee Joshua Henry, Emmy Award nominee Mj Rodriguez, Emmy Award winner Bradley Whitford, Tariq Trotter aka Black Thought of The Roots, with Emmy and Tony Award winner Judith Light, and Vanessa Hudgens. The film is written by Tony Award winner Steven Levenson, and is produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard for Imagine Entertainment, Julie Oh, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Lyrics
When I was nine
Michael and I
Entered a talent show down at the Y
9 A.M., went to rehearse by some stairs
Mike couldn't sing
But I said, "No one cares"
We sang "Yellow Bird" and "Let's Go Fly A Kite"
Over and over and over
'Til we got it right
When we emerged from the Y.M.C.A.
Three o'clock sun had made the grass hay
I thought
Hey, what a way to spend a day
Hey, what a way to spend a day
I make a vow
Right here and now
I'm gonna spend my time this way
When I was sixteen
Michael and I
Got parts in Wеst Side at White Plains High
Three o'clock, went to rеhearse in the gym
Mike played "Doc", who did not sing
Fine with him
We sang, "Got a rocket in your pocket"
And "The Jets are gonna have their day, tonight"
Over and over and over
'Til we got it right
When we emerged, wiped out by that play
Nine o'clock, stars and moon lit the way
I thought
Hey, what a way to spend a day
Hey, what a way to spend a day
I made a vow
I wonder now
Am I cut out to spend my time this way?
I'm twenty-nine
Michael and I
Live on the west side of SoHo, N.Y.
9 A.M., I write a lyric or two
Mike sings his song now on Mad Avenue
I sing, "Come to your senses
Defenses are not the way to go"
Over and over and over
And over, and over, and over, and over
'Til I get it right
When I emerge from B Minor or A
Five o'clock, diner calls, "I'm on my way"
I think
Hey, what a way to spend a day
Hey, what a way to spend a day
I make a vow
Right here and now
I'm gonna spend my time this way
I'm gonna spend my time this way
This was the scene that convinced me that Andrew Garfield is going to win the Oscar.
Same
I agree
He should, but Will Smith will win instead. He’ll be more heavily advertised and campaigned as the deserving winner.
Yes my baby will win the Oscar this year ❤️
@@samsouyave-murphy986 man, just let people be hopeful!! it’s fun to imagine the impossible is possible
I need a full version of Andrew singing Come to your senses
Agreed. Best bit of this song and it only lasts 10 seconds or so!!

Isn’t there a full version on this channel?
It’s so much more powerful on film, trust me. You actually see footage of 9 year old Jon and 9 year old Michael and 16 year old Jon and 16 year old Michael, and the emotion is so much more raw. This song is heartbreaking especially when you consider Jon’s fate and the fate of many other people with AIDS (the real life Michael is still alive…but many others weren’t so lucky).
Wait is was actually them
@@gracehricay763 I actually don't think it's actual footage cause Lin Manuel said he included his teacher in the flashback, so it's probably made for the movie. Then again, I'm not 100% on that one.
@@gracehricay763 Michael, and Susan are not real people but based on his friend and partner.
His luck will never end
The version in the movie is less perfect technically but is way more emotional than this one (which is great too)
When he sang, “come to your senses, defenses are not the way to go” I cried so hard
The fact that Jon did spend 'til the last second of his time this way... kinda bittersweet, but he did.
My best friend Andrew passed away from cancer in 2019. He was 21. We met in the second grade, grew up together, he was my first crush, we went to prom together (after he came out as gay) and when he was diagnosed a year into college I'd visit him at home and in the hospital during treatment. Watching this scene and hearing this song broke me, but it was beautiful. Oscar worthy for sure.
(If you want to spread awareness, Andrew's cancer was osteosarcoma, which is a very lesser known type of bone cancer. Research is important and it was his goal to spread awareness since it was difficult finding out things about it when he was going through treatment and others diagnosed. Love to all
I'm so sorry ❤💔
I’m so sorry ❤️❤️
So sorry for your loss...
God Bless!
So I know you commented this 2 years ago, but I still want to just say I am so sorry. I lost my grandma to Covid so I know how hard loses are. Andrew is flying high and I will try my best to spread awareness🫶
I cried like a baby at this scene, I legit thought that Michael passed away at the narrating part- like bro don't play with my feelings like that! I got so sad! 😭😭✋️
For what it's worth, Michael was based on Jonathan's real life best friend Matt O'Grady, and I do believe he is still alive and well today
And then you realize that the one that's passed away was Jonathan instead
hearing him sing "come to your senses" was beautiful. can i get a full version, please? i will pay you, andrew garfield-
I think the same ;-;
Andrew Garfield deserves the Oscar..
This scene is so emotional. I literally crying in here 😭
Andrew's performance was OSCAR WORTHY! If he doesn't at least get a nomination, it will be the biggest snub this year!
3:39 I neeeeed Andrew singing the rest of the song goooosh
I wish they hadn't cut "With only so much time to spend, don't wanna waste the time I'm given. Have it all, play the game - some recommend. I'm afraid, it just may be time to give in"
This song is beautiful and I needed it so much! Thank you so much Andrew Garfield, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and everyone else who helped create it! For the past year I've been serving and auditioning, trying to become an actor. Had been doubting my life decisions and then after a long shift one day I came across this film, and this song specifically. Made me feel seen. Makes me feel like even if my dreams don't work out as I hope that they will, that loving the process is enough. That I'm not wasting my life. Appreciate this song more than words can express! Sincerely, Brian
Andrew Garfield’s singing voice gives me goosebumps I really hope he does more acting projects that involves him singing in the future he did such an amazing job on this performance
3:39 we need a full version of come to your senses, Andrews voice is just amazing
This song and scene broke me hard. Andrew should've won that Oscar.
This movie deserves all the rewards. Every crew & cast member gave it their all & delivered an authentic, raw well thought out & emotional masterpiece. Lin Manuel Miranda must be so proud
I loved the little tribute to the late great Sondheim in “We sang ‘Got a rocket in your pocket’…”!
This scene made me cry hard Andrew deserves an Oscar holy shit
3:39 when he sings come to your senses
Ikr 😍
I’m sure in hindsight the Academy wishes they’d given the Oscar to Garfield. And I think audiences and history will agree.
Exactly a month and a day ago, my best friend had a severe health scare and it wasn’t looking good. I watched tick tick Boom on Jan 18th, and when this scene and song played, I thought about her. When I listened to the song again a few days later, it hit me so hard. I couldn’t stop thinking about her and what we went through together. I thought about all our greatest moments and how I wanted to continue living for her. Due to that, I cannot listen to this song without crying, but it has also helped me process my emotions from the entire ordeal. I listen to this song a lot because Andrew has the voice of an Angel and I can’t stop listening to it, and while it is emotional for me, I am forever grateful for it. Jonathan was amazingly talented and this song is incredible.
I hope your friend is doing well now.
@@rfrolicarts she is! Thank you so much for the well wishes. It means a lot :)
Andrew Garfield didn't play this part; he is Johnathan Larson.
god...... his damn voice is actually beautiful
I already saw this movie 3 times and keep listening the song.
This movie is f*cking masterpiece
I honestly didn't expect to cry when watching it I thought I would laugh and have a good time (which I did) but I ended up finding myself crying.
This scene was so emotional
I very seldom like musicals. But this Tick, Tick... BOOM! deserves to be watched, appreciated and recognized by many.
Andrew Garfield has the perfect voice and best acting performance for the role of Jonathan Larson. I hope he wins next month in the much awaited Golden Globes and in the upcoming Oscars.
All the songs used in this musical drama film were download-worthy, especially this song. Sayang walang music video pa nito na straight from the movie. Panuorin nyo na lang. Di masasayang ang oras nyo. 😉

This was the first scene they shot for the movie. This blows me away even more. Help I am obsessed.
I am truly obsessed with this film and this song... The tenderness, the depth, the beauty... I really love it: it's the perfect representation of what a call is. Thank you Andrew Garfield because you made this masterpiece very precious. I join all the people who wants you to win the Oscar and I am glad it's a big croud. Thank you very much, from the very deep of my heart. ❤
Your talent inspires me to make more songs. I love the way you express the songs to people. We all loved it and support you! ❤️❤️☺️
I bawled while watching this part, he loves his bestie so much
Incredible version of this precious song!
To be able to make me cry just listening to the emotion in Andrew’s voice. This song was recorded live, no breaks. Unreal.
Ngl this is the most beautiful song I ever heard.
This song never fails to make me cry.
This brought me to tears, it was so amazing and I felt every emotion.
This song is so emotional like I’m crying listening to it
I seriously cannot listen to it without crying. Just reading the lyrics makes me emotional
I'm emotionless. But this song makes even me emotional. He really deserved the Oscar.
Shattered my heart into a billion pieces.
3:12 The lyrics are so clever
I can't explain why but this song gives me so much comfort I can't even explain why it's just so comforting I love Andrew Garfield he is the best British actor him and Daniel Radcliffe need to be in a movie together the only thing I need ong!
So
Freaking
GOOD...
I revist this all the time its so good for the soul
this scene broke me, I was somehow not crying throughout the rest of the movie but this pushed me over the edgeee :(((
Thanks❤️
you are amazing
This scene and song made this movie one of my favorites, specially as a writer. It's so emotional in so many levels. People who've lost someone, people who's dreams are in the arts, people doubting themselves... It has a bit for everyone
You are very multi talented guy❣️
Big fan of yours sir🙏
Most hated person in Spiderman 2014 and now before 3 months I watched 10-20 people clapping in theatre for other Spidermen in no way home and I saw the same people clapping for Andrew Garfield after 8 years. I wish I could give Oscar.
Idk this is my favorite song in this movie it's hit me so hard
Why am I crying? 😭I already know how this song goes, why is this different? Lmao
wait, dont tell me andrew is having a youtube channel rn
is this actually rlly his official YT channel!
@@Musicfy2003 i think it’s not
this is his official artist channel, it had the music symbol on the name. so this is used to upload his soundtrack, dont think any personal things will be posted though.
@ the music symbol is different from the ones the channels use to be verified
Chorei tanto nessa cena. Andrew superou minhas expectativas nesse filme!
Meu coração ficou quentinho com essa música
Melhor parte do filme
Imagine if Andrew Garfield had won 2022 Best Actor at the Oscars and we didn't get "The Slap Heard Round the World" from Will Smith...
Wow
God bless you
Makes me think of my best friend Charlie who committed suicide when I was 21. I miss him dearly
You got a beautiful singing
🧡❤💜💙
essa ACABOU comigo :-(
😭😭😭
Does anybody know if Michael overcame the disease or if he is still alive today? That was a plot point I was a little disappointed didn’t really get resolved.
His real name is Matt O'Grady and he's still alive and ticking.
@@BlueYoshi85 oh good. I’m glad.
He did an interview about it once (archived in the book Boho Days) and it's really sad to read, actually;
"I feel incredibly lucky and honoured, but the whole thing is bittersweet and painfully ironic. He’s sitting there writing about me and other people and our friends who have died, and here it is 20 years later and I’m still around and he’s not. That’s not how anybody thought the story was gonna go."
It is resolved; he is seen at the concert version of Tick Tick Boom 2 years later (you see him at the very end of the film).

This is the pre-recorded "clean" version. What you hear in the movie was recorded live on set, the singing is more raw and emotional.
