JONATHAN
When I was nine, Michael and I
Entered a talent show down at the Y
Nine A.M. went to rehearse by some stairs
Mike couldn't sing
But I said, 'No one cares'
We sang 'Yellow Bird' and 'Let's Go Fly A Kite'
Over and over and over
Till we got it right
When we emerged from the YMCA
Three o'clock sun had made the grass
Hey, I thought,
Hey, what a way to spend the day
Hey, what a way to spend the day
I make a vow, right here and now
I'm gonna spend my time this way
When I was sixteen, Michael and I
Got parts in West Side
At White Plains High
Three o'clock went to rehearse in the gym
Mike played Doc, who didn't sing
Fine with him
We sang, 'gotta rocket in your pocket and the
Jets's are gonna have their day tonight'
Over and over and over
Till we got it right
When we emerged, wiped out by that play
Nine o'clock, stars and moon lit the way
I thought,
Hey, what a way to spend a day
Hey, what a way to spend a day
I made a vow
I wonder now
Am I cut out to spend my time this way?
With only so much time to spend
Don't wanna waste the time I'm given
Have it all, play the game
Some recommend
I'm afraid, it just may be time to give in
I'm twenty-nine, Michael and I
Live on the west side of SoHo and Y
Nine A.M. I write a lyric or two
Mike sings a song now on Mad Avenue
I sing, 'come to your senses
Defenses are not the way to go'
Over and over and over
Till I got it right
When I emerge from B Minor or A
Five o'clock, diner calls, I'm on my way
I think,
Hey, what a way to spend a day
Hey, what a way to spend a day
I make a vow
Right here and now
I'm gonna spend my time this way
I'm gonna spend my time this way
I relate to this song so much, I just want to write musicals and act, I am always worried I will have to give up on my dreams and "be an adult" I don't know how to achieve my dreams but I plan to try I know it's a lot to worry about at effing thirteen, anyway I grew up watching rent and it and tick tick boom are some of my favorite musicals and even though your gone, thank you Jonathan Larson for inspiring me every day
Keep going! Never give up!
No song has made my tear up so quickly
This song will always make me think of Jonathan. I hope he knows the influence he had. I wish he could have seen it.
Love when he sings let's go fly a kite it is to the tune of that song...

Love songs like this and I wanna ale magic bc they hit so close to home
Love the westchester references!
I was thinking how Andrew Garfield sung this song without ever actually being in West side, and I just knew that Jonathan would sing it like he was. I was right. He’s got the accent and everything (:
Andy actually said in many interviews that he felt as if Jon was there with him and if he felt as if it wasn't true to Jon he'd redo it over and over
Just to be clear this is not Jonathan Larson, it's Raul Esparza who played him in the musical lol
I love the part that comes after 3:41
Wonder what Garfield’s take on this will be like in the Netflix version...
Me too, I’m beyond excited!!
@@Shae29 I think it will be a heartbreaking one. Maybe we’ll actually see himself and Michael as the ages that he that they were in the flashback. Apparently he doesn’t just go by Jon, they have his full name on there. I saw some clips of him singing, and he sounds perfect for the part. I also think that this was a passion project for Lin. And I think it’ll have a lot of relevance now in the wake of COVID 19.
@@flanplan5903 I didn’t even think of that. That would be so cool to see flashbacks
@@flanplan5903 and where did you find the clips of Garfield singing?
@@Shae29 just look up Andrew Garfield singing on UA-cam. There’s one where he sings a little excerpt of dear theodosia at the tonys and of him singing happy Christmas by John Lennon.
