How to Create A Butterfly Garden

- I made this short video to highlight a few tips that will be useful to know if you want to promote wildlife in your yard. The North Carolina zoo helped support this video, and I'm grateful to all the staff there who helped give me their knowledge. I also wanted to thank my amazing patrons for their patience.
Here are the main points I wanted to make
1. It's not that hard - you just need to start.
2. Flowers over Grass
3. Lay off the pesticides.
4. Get LOTS of flowers together
5. Choose a sunny location
6. Plant natives if you can
7. Remember to plant host plants as well (like milkweeds)

Love your video. I've had a butterfly garden for the past three summers now. I love it! I have host plants for the Spicebush Swallowtail, the Monarch, the Black Swallowtail, Gulf Fritillary, and the Zebra swallowtail. Also lots of nectaring plants. It was a great summer!🦋😃
For 30 years I've had butterfly gardens both at home and at work. As a teacher I can't recommend a better educational and eccological hobby for children.

Well done! I started my garden here in South Florida in May. It’s a memorial butterfly garden for my mom and son who I lost just seven months apart. Make sure you plant LOTS of milkweed because the monarchs are VERY HUNGRY caterpillars.

We have many butterfly gardens being planted and around Rochester, Michigan. Rochester Pollinators Committee started promoting and encouraging people to save the Monarch and the other pollinators by planting native plants to their local landscapes. Thanks Rob, We try to cater the wildlife in our yard. We certainly get our share. With the misfortune of mosquitoes. Which seem to have an heightened attraction to me. We keep our yard free of most mosquito breeding areas. Of course can't do anything about neighbors. In any event great video for people who have an interest in creating a bit of a wild space. Put up some sticks or thin poles around your yard and in plant areas to provide perches for dragonflies to land on. They eat mosquitos, so the more dragonflies that you can keep in your yard, the less mosquitos you'll have.

I created a Monarch garden a year ago this past March that has provided a place for the survival of the butterflies and a place of peaceful quite for folks during Covid.
My neighbor and I created a butterfly garden with a birdfeeder and small watering holej ust outside of it. It backs up to our backyard retaining wall and on the other two sides we have added a little rock wall surrounded by small white marble rocks!
What a cool idea! Never would had thought of starting one.
Lawns are important too. I do not cut the grass beyond April and let clover, lesser stitchwort, daisies, dandelions and hawkweed grow. All benefit the bees, hover flies and butterflies. In fact the whole ecosystem in my garden benefits, and i don't have to cut the lawn again until October. I live in the UK by the way!
Milkweeds, Zinnias, Echinaceas, Orchids, Dahlias, Peonies and butterfly bushes are definitely going into my butterfly garden!! Thank you for uploading bc this was super helpful to me!! 🙏🏾💕🦋🪴💐
After watching this video I feel more inspired to help the monarchs repopulate now. I live in texas so being able to help them as they journey out of South America will be great for them. I also want to help attract others too but my priority is the monarchs

Fairly obviously, insects can become a nightmare in our subtropical climate, so we've been trying to come up with a plan to make our garden easier to cope with.
A butterfly-friendly flower garden surrounding a traditional Japanese rock / raked stone garden will be ideal 😁

here in Europe, the population dropped significantly in just a few years. I have been to a talk at the local university where they presented a 90% decline in insects since 1990. Butterflies and moths especially. You now get lucky to find 3 or 4 species when you actively look for them. It is very sad.
Out city has started a initiative last year and planted a lot of colorful flowers next to roads where just green weeds and grass were. I hope to notice more butterflies and bees next spring.
my project has hit more roadblocks, but October might give me new hopes. I plan to make a temporary camera by adding a screen and recorder off the composite signal. Going out and filming stuff is more important

This decline in insect populations is happening everywhere, it's truly sad to see. One day, I want to start a insect nursery where bees and butterflies can reign!
Big reasons are usage of harsh artificial pesticides and other one is replacing natural biodiversity AKA weeds with grass lawns. Believe it or not in natyre plants don't always look so perfects.

I just started my garden and only have monarchs but im about to atleast 3 more speices ive put 3 hours of my time into watching tips and how to vids and already getting tools for the farming
Read up more into the needs of each individual species. For example: the atala butterfly only eats and lays eggs on the coontie plant. But they need several coonties together. One plant alone wouldn't do for the butterfly habitat. Likewise each butterfly has different needs and that makes the difference on the number of varieties that would visit your garden. They also drink water. Shallow dishes with fresh water are needed. Notice they come visit after the rain or when you just watered your plants.

One important thing to note!
If you are wanting to create a butterfly garden yourself, the very first thing you should do is search up what species of butterflies resides in your area. After learning that, then provide their hostplants. Each species has it's own and they are VERY particular about it.
And you don't wanna buy a plant to attract a specific butterfly and it turns out that butterfly isn't even in your area, lol.
Steps to create a Butterfly Garden:
1. Learn what butterflies are in your area
2. Amend the soil if needed
3. Provide Hostplants - Natives work best. The plants WILL be munched on so plant enough to where you wont even notice the damage
4. Provide Nectar Plants - Natives work best and plant in large swaths of a single color rather than multiple colors in one patch. This makes it easier for the butterflies to see and find your flowers which gives them a bigger target to go for instead of multicolored flowers in a single patch.
5. Provide Fruit (optional)
6. Have sunny areas for sunbathing

Im trying to create a pair of 20' x 6' elevated butterfly gardens on an elevated plateau in front of a house instead of trying to grow grass due to dry sunny conditions. Does this sound like a good idea?If so, could I outline them in slate rocks, instead of a wooden border?
Does this sound like too much of an obstruction to try to do in the front yard for this house? it is a 200' front yard space of a large home...

I’d like to try this, but it’s hard to find suitable flowers fit for my yard, since it’s so shady in my yard. Maybe I can find the sunniest spot to grow...
Most plants will benefit with atleast 5 hours of sunlight per day.
Try finding some shade loving wildflower mixes or plant some flowers such as impatiens.
Or, try trimming back the trees some in your yard.
Mint , parsley and clover are good for pollinators and all are fine with few hours of sunlight.
