  • 4 inches of snow fell in downtown Gatlinburg, TN, on Christmas Eve and early Christmas morning, with higher elevation areas receiving even more. This video shows our drive through town in the snow, and also getting out and walking through the beautiful snowfall.

    This is a beautiful video. I retired in 6/2019 after 45 years in Radio/TV/Telecommunications engineering. Never had a holiday off until I went into TV. So, as a Christian, I empathize with you about working on Christmas Day. I also remember my father working many a Christmas Day as hospital medical staff don't get holidays, either. If I go at Christmas, I'd likely follow your example and eat in my hotel room. Unless there are ham radio or model train stores there, I wouldn't be much of a shopper. Fortunately, I only have God and myself to satisfy. Have a blessed day!

    • @NCMemoryMakers

      I can see hospital workers, law enforcement officers, and those who truly have to be on duty, working on holidays. But restaurants and stores should close and let their employees be with their family, or spend the day however they wish. I completely agree with you.
      I am not aware of a model train store there, but there may be one.

    Thank you so much for posting this video I lost a very close family member a couple days ago and I kept telling myself I need to try to get in the Christmas spirit and I search for Tennessee Christmas and your video came up oddly enough you sound a lot like that person that I lost anyway thanks for taking the time to post the video are used to live in Knoxville for a couple years and before that I lived in Memphis and later settled in Birmingham Alabama. We don’t go to Gatlinburg is often as we used to we got married there in 1999 but I think maybe after seeing this video I may surprise my wife for the trip just for a couple days to see the lights and try to clear our minds thanks again and merry Christmas to you and yours.

      First, let me say that we am so very sorry for your loss. Your family will be in our prayers. I am glad that our video brought some comfort in such a sad time for you. I think surprising your wife with a trip like this, would be a great idea. Sometimes its good to just get away, and like you said, clear your minds. We also posted another video on Christmas Day last year, where we went just went on a beautiful drive through the snow covered Tennessee countryside. It was on the same trip as this one. Wasn't sure if you might like it, as well. It was a beautiful drive. It is called "White Christmas In Sevier County, TN".

    • @NCMemoryMakers
      @NCMemoryMakers  2 роки тому

      It can happen, but it may not. Gatlinburg gets some snow every winter, but just not always at Christmas. The good thing about it, is that you have the Great Smoky Mountains, and the higher elevations get much more snow than in town. So, even if there's none in town, there may be some higher up. We've gone every year at Christmas for over 20 years, and we've seen white Christmases, and some where there was no snow.

    It's a church, it should be free! Or was it a church!, anyways we hope to move to Tennessee one day. So What's to do their in the winter time?

    • @NCMemoryMakers
      @NCMemoryMakers  2 роки тому

      There is plenty to do in the winter time. You might want to consider Ober Gatlinburg, which you can either take the cable car from town up to the top, or you can drive up and pay a small fee to park. There is a really nice chair lift which takes you up to the top, and the views are extraordinary...Especially if there is snow. It can be a cold ride up, though.
      Nearly everything is open during the winter months, so the possibilities are endless. There is the Sky Bridge, which is pretty nice, but not cheap. Its something to do once or twice, like maybe to see it in the fall, and then again in the snow.
      One of our favorite things to do in the winter, is ride up into the National Park when there is snow. Be aware the National Park road closes during snow, but usually re-opens in a day or two.
      Pigeon Forge literally has endless shows and entertainment possibilities, with many Christmas themed shows in the winter.
      Not sure what you were referring to as being a church. If you meant Christ Memorial Gardens, it was not a church, but an attraction. It is now closed down.

      We actually did. It's a bit into the video because of the traffic, but that's why I titled it "Drive/walk through". We parked, got out, and walked the town.
      Start watching about the 20:40 mark. I even put text on the screen, that says "Time to get out and walk".
      In addition, we have several hiking videos posted, as well. We actually love to walk.

    Do Shops, restaurants & Hotels stay open during Christmas eve & Day if people decide to celebrate Christmas in Gatlinburg?

    • @NCMemoryMakers
      @NCMemoryMakers  2 роки тому +1

      The shops are open through the holidays, but many do close on Christmas day, which is fine with us. We are generally in Gatlinburg that time of year, and we simply make it a point not to eat out on Christmas Day. We get plenty of food for what we will need through that day. Most everything is open Christmas Eve, and the day after Christmas. And yes, some restaurants do remain open on Christmas Day.

    • @NCMemoryMakers
      @NCMemoryMakers  Рік тому

      I won't say it's never happened, but it is a very rare occurrence. The worst thing that ever happened to this area, was the wildfires of 2016.
      Now, I would imagine there could be tornadoes in Central and Western Tennessee, because it's flatter there. You do not really hear of them much in the mountainous areas.

      @NCMemoryMakers  3 роки тому +2

      @@mauricioortiz9253 snow is hard to predict in Gatlinburg, because it's at the foot of the mountains. We were very blessed to see it this time. While it does snow there every winter, your best bet would be in January to see some. If you go up into the mountains, there is a lot more snow a lot more often.
      You can see snow in the higher mountains from November through April, but in Gatlinburg, mainly the end of December through February or early March.
      If you can be flexible for when you take your trip, just be watching the forecast and plan it when there's supposed to be snow. This past winter, they had quite a bit.

    Sad that money forces people to work Christmas Eve and Christmas. I like my childhood in the 80’s when nothing was open at Christmas, and Jesus was the focus. Gatlinburg also isn’t what I remember as a kid. We’ve done a family Thanksgiving in Gatlinburg for years. But last year changed our mind about this year. We were stuck in traffic the whole trip.

    • @NCMemoryMakers
      @NCMemoryMakers  2 роки тому +1

      I agree. Even though we were up there on Christmas Day, we had bought enough food prior, that we ate in the room. We have a principle about eating out on those days, and we feel those employees should have those days with their families. We went on a nice scenic drive that day, but did not shop or eat out. And yes, Gatlinburg has changed over the years. I still remember it when I was a kid...much more family friendly. Today, its been taken over by the moonshine stores.
