UPDATE: I would still recommend this microphone. The plastic clip broke - I contacted Purple Panda and they sent me a whole new microphone for free. Hats off for their customer service.
Thanks for the update. I recently bought the PowerDewise lapel mic and it was DOA. So Ill give the Panda a try. Which would you say is a close second place to the Panda?
I would think so. I didn’t mention my review in my customer service ticket so it should be no problem. Looking at amazon reviews, it looks like their customer support is good overall.
@@anderszidane973 Have you compare Purple Panda with PowerDewise? I like Power more than Purple, its sounds better than Purple when I yelling, But my friend likes Purple sound tones.
Well done my friends! I've been looking at all the different cheap mics on Amazon and keep coming back to this one. Mostly cuz of the cute as a button name.
Helped out a lot! I think I will be getting this lav mic, and what!? 497 subscribers?! You deserve way more than that! And I love the quality of your set up here with that zeiss 35 1.4
People seem to throw around the term shotgun mic a lot these days for things that clearly aren't, a shotgun mic has an interference tube in front of the mic cartridge, which is a long tube with slots on the side between say 4 and 16 inches long. Vaguely resembles a shotgun barrel. Not usually what you would want for on-camera use or even indoor use as it ideally should be on a boom
You did a great job with this David...it helped me decide today what to buy. I’m going with your suggestion and might get the Rode Wireless Go to use with it. Hopefully both a good investment 👍🙏
Thanks for getting right to the point. In the very beginning you started don't waste hours searching for a microphone as basically they are all the same. Funny how we do that to purchase a $20.00 item. This video save me A LOT of time. Thanks again and I will be purchasing the Purple Panda.
Won't work on my Tascam DR-10x, no plug-in power, I bought Aputure A.Lavs and Boya BY-M1's that are powered. Both of those will work with theTascam DR-10 series. Good Review!
Great review and I did just what you described.I Looked at hundreds of reviews, and dozens of lavalier mics. I finally chose one based on this video. I ordered the Purple Panda. Thank you for this video I thought I'd never choose one!
Rory Armstrong I did and I love it! I use Audacity to bump up the quality which makes it sound like an expensive mic in my opinion. If you're on the fence about purchasing it..hop off the fence and but it!
Jack Spellerberg I think I might. My only concern is that I want to purchase 4 to plug into a zoom H6 for an interview type session. I already have VXLR adaptors to convert to 3.5 inputs. So my concern is if it work plugged into the H6. I’ve heard that it has issues
Nice review. One thing you might want to test on a lav mic is whether there is any sound recorded when touch the mic cable. The dancing test is insignificant. Lol.
Is Zoom ZH1 H1 Handy Portable Digital Recorder the best cheap recorder? Is there a best cheap alternative just like this mic? Thanks! Great video and I love that you told us you did the reserch!
Which one do you think is better? This one or the PowerDeWise Lav Mic? This one has a dead cat muff and the PowerDeWise doesn't, but I've heard the testing of the PowerDeWise and it seems to be unidirectional... What do you think about it? Thanks!
Loved your way of making videos! Useful info and funny ;) and sincere! I do have a question. Do you have cheap suggestions for a wireless clip on microphone ? I don't want to be attached to my smartphone when talking
Hmm I'm not sure there are any cheap wireless lav mics worth bothering with. What I would recommend instead is getting an affordable audio recorder, plugging the mic into that, and putting it in your pocket. You'll essentially be wireless, and can sync the audio later. It's actually very easy to do, and probably much less of a hassle than dealing with a cheapo wireless lav mic. You'll also have the benefit of having a dedicated audio recorder for other uses.
How important is it to have something like the Zoom H1 to record the audio as opposed to recording directly on a Mac or iPhone? Is there a noticeable quality difference?
+DarthDravvid Good question. Generally you’ll have higher quality audio, and some cameras don’t have a mic input. Depending on what you shoot you can also have the H1 in your pocket with a lav mic, so you’re untethered from the camera. Syncing audio in post is actually remarkably simple.
Can you help me with something? I have a Tuscan DR-05 and I have the same Purple Panda MIC but when I record audio with those two components, in the background of the audio, there is like this constant clicking noise... plz help! I see a lot of potential in the MIC, and I don't know whether the problem is in the recorder or MIC..? I haven't been able to use the MIC for quite a while because of this issue. Is there a fix for this/have you come across something like this?
+Humor with George My guess would be the microphone, often times this is a sign that the mic isn‘t plugged in correctly. I doubt the recorder would cause this issue, but not sure!
Hey David. Thanks for the review. Looks like Amazon is out of stock, except for 3rd party at $36. Got a second pick at closer to $24 or would you stick with the Purple Panda at the higher price?
I definitely wouldn't get it for $36. It seems like it's mostly a "rebadged" product so on Amazon there are plenty of alternatives that essentially use the same hardware with a different label and accessories.
@@DavidVogt thank you. I had a 3 dolar mic. It was good for a few years and it broke. Very good deal for me.. but now i want a cleaner sound. I think only a bigger mic will do the job becuase it has a bigger diafragm. As i ubderstand it that allows the mic to focus better on my voice and clean all other voices and ecos
Thanks for the review. I know lav mics are meant to be worn on shirt collars, but I'm curious as to how well it picks up your voice while holding it out at arm's length? I have a dbpower action cam (go pro knock off) and want o start vlogging while hiking. I would like a lav mic because of it being light weight. I'm hoping I can leave the cord wrapped up and let it hang from the camera...just not sure if it will still pick up my voice and wondering if you've tested that? Thanks again for he review
It would likely sound better than a built-in microphone. The main factor in sound quality is going to be proximity, so if you’re doubling the distance of the microphone to your mouth, it won’t sound nearly as good. If you can, aim for a directional microphone. Maybe the Rode videomicro?
Thanks for the review. I bought mine from amazon. It didnt work with my iPad Pro 12.9". Althought it did work with my iPhone 6 and Galaxy S7 Edge. I contacted Purple Panda about this issue and they refunded me for the troubles. Has anyone else found a way to make it work with an iPad?

So if I buy one and it doesn't work as listed, I'm possibly screwed from getting my money back :(. Too risky. Anyone else comment on this situation?
Hi David, I just found this video and wanted to ask about the use of the Zoom H1. I have a battery-powered lav mic, and when I run it to my Zoom H1, it comes out super quiet. As a comparison I ran the mic directly to my Canon SL2, manually reduced the input levels on the camera to about 25%, and it's much clearer. I tested the Zoom's input levels at 40, 50, 60, and even 75, and the volume seems really low. I'm recording .wav files, with the low cut filter off. Do I just boost the volume in my editing software? Thanks, and I like the skateboard shots on your Instagram.

It would if the H4N has a 3.5mm input, though I don't know if it does. If I had an H4N I'd probably aim for something a little higher-end than this, though as a backup it could still be worthwhile.
Thanks for the answer! It does have a 3.5mm input. Do you have any suggestions for higher-end lavalier mics? Are they even worth the extra money? I thought the point of your video was that most of them sound pretty similar. I just want a mic to get rid of the white noise and reverb of the zoom built-in microphones. Also, would this work if I connected it to my smartphone to record video?
Hi Alma, If I had an H4N I'd probably aim for something in the higher-end range. This is the best *cheap* microphone, but I think it might be worth spending a few extra bucks depending on what you're doing. If you're filming UA-cam videos, it's definitely good enough.
