This game has such an optimistic view in such a depressing world. Everywhere you look there's people who gave up completely during the flash. People settling and accepting things will never get better on garbage island, and the gamesters and bystanders who immediately jump ship to something new when the red and green start to influence downtown. Alex and Joel show us that everyone has their own story no matter who you are. It may be pointless, but there's a "point" in "pointless".
Sotws was a genius love letter to Lisa the Pointless. Where the original didn't do a very good job establishing the setting, mainly in downtown, sotws was perfect and fixed any issues it had.

I mean... Maybe Joel searched for the bullet for a vert long time, but he seeked for a friend way longer in a world of pure violence. That line really goes hard, it's so simple, but at the same time so poetic within the game context.

    • @dumbvillage9253
      @dumbvillage9253 10 місяців тому +16

@@atpsoldat6108 i mostly prefer infinity unfolds because it actually fixes most of the crashes in this game. And yeah i think attack moves really do kinda ruin the point of it (the gun whip animation is hilariously stupid) but at the same time it makes atleast some sense from logical perspective. Also finger gun despite being choppy actually looks good and isn't just straight up damage and rather applies debuffs which just fit the criteria for him! But i can still understand why most people wouldn't want him to be able to dish out consistent damage

  • @birdup1_2
    @birdup1_2 10 місяців тому +124

Actually, as a matter of fact, you can beat Hugo. Particularly, in the infinity route.
If you disarm him when he takes the knife. You face off with him, and end him, Alex taking severe wounds. You continue, kill the infinitized desert group, face off against elephante, te one who made the gun, kill a the mutant on the car, and face downtown, ending on an even worse note.

    • @mutantwormgirl
      @mutantwormgirl  10 місяців тому +49

Oh interesting! I hadn't seen that one. I know there's also a way to do it on a non-infinity run where Alex and Joel wind up running from him and you have a horror chase sequence in the tunnels.
I was stretched really thin by the end of that Infinity route though. It took me several attempts just to beat Jason and the other guys, I couldn't put a dent in Sylvester or the phone guy, and I probably wouldn't have been able to beat Hugo.

It is regarded among the Lisa community that Unfolds is a poor addition to Scholar Of The Wilbur Sin and even base Lisa the Pointless. With many unnecessary/poor changes to the story and game play, music "borrowed" from the Monster Update, and even stolen assets from people within the community that are... not good people to say the least, I don't want to start drama. I highly suggest to disregard anything from this add-on and either play base Lisa the Pointless or base Scholar.

Big thanks for making this, and showing off Pointless to a wide studio audience.
This is a little nitpicky, but Anaconda's tracks both make reference to works by Julius Evola. "Ride the Anaconda" with "Ride the Tiger", and "Modern Day Ouroboros" originally being called "Revolt Against the Modern Day Ouroboros", referencing "[...] the Modern World". There's also some scattered references to Chinese warlord Zhang Xianzhong, which are important for the game's message. Love your work.

Absolutely fantastic video essay as always! Here's a few fun things about the mod I found:
    - The conversation with Milo the Yoga Master actually changes if you have low kills and he will actually allow you to leave the yoga studio if you do so, allowing you to spare him. He wholesomely wishes the both of Alex and Joel good luck on their journey to find a better place.
    - You can actually head back to the marauders village, but you'll see that everyone has turned into skeletons or has died, including the village elder. The man next to the village elder is still there, and he mentions that "nothing has happened here for decades." Alex mentions that it hasn't been that long since they visited and the man will mention that it has been 30 years, showing that the passage of time is truly warped in Olathe.
    - There is a 'witch' doctor you can find in Downtown Olathe, which will let you purchase a trauma kit for 100 mags. By doing so, you can avoid the fight with Carmac entirely. If you enter the shack, Alex will politely leave instead.
    - If you obtain all of Joel's tactics pages and read the tactics book again, you can get a special skill!
    - There is a bench that Alex can infinitely rest at in a cave near where the kid's playground is. There is a small flashback you can get, involving Alex and Chie as kids.
    - On the 2nd fold, you can actually avoid Hugo stabbing Alex by dodging or disarming him. I have a video on my account of the Hugo fight as well. This doesn't change the ending, but it does change the outcome of Alex and changes the dialogue.
    - There is a Joel bond system, where specific actions you do will add or decrease his bond points. If you don't act friendly towards Joel and have a negative bond near the end of the game when Hugo states that Joel will not hurt him, instead of attempting to shoot, Joel will simply just point his gun down.
    - You can feed the fish jerky and it will in turn cause it to get stronger and give you new moves. The fish will also make comments if you interact with it every now and then, saying things like "It seems to like Geen". However, if you reach the 3rd fold, interacting with it will simply give the dialogue "it is afraid of you."
    - If you defeat Arnold and the army of infinity people in the 3rd fold, there's a special fight and event that occurs afterwards. I won't spoil it but it's definitely something. A trick is to use play dead and throw bottles as enemies will miss their attacks on Joel, even if he's the only one left.
Thank you again for the great video Worm Girl!

After some searching done, it shows that Georgy's based on a joy mutant in Lisa the Painful, that you have to fight to get one of the many party members. He is a joy addict as he gets the withdraw affect, and steals something valuable from Alex (unless equipped, and is replaced by the gear he starts with) to sell for mags and to then buy joy, as this is the time where you can see the joy dealer at the inn (in olathea) which is the last time you see him.@@togeluga_the_cat

This video is like the game she reviewed...
    Jam packed with quality...
Also my headcanon is the second ending...
It's the one i personally is the more realistic considering how Alex is
He was a bully who mellowed out with age but the world has changed so much that being overly nice will help others but, in the end, will not help when someone is out for blood
And Alex doesn't strike me as a harmless man but he's also not a deranged killer without remorse
Sometimes the only way to survive is fighting for your life and, in some cases, taking life is the only way to keep survivng
    As the saying goes:
You can't call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence.
If you are not capable of violence, you are not peaceful, you're harmless.
    Important distinction.
(Sorry for the big comment but i really liked the video)

In the OG Pointless, Alex strikes me as someone who seen it all and won’t hesitate to fight back if the need arise. He’s chummy with Joel, but he’s nowhere near as friendly to strangers as SotWS makes him out to be. Basically, if it was OG Alex that dealt with Gunter Scrouge, he will kill the other old man if it escalate.

Love how Pointless fucks with the player with Alex' fighting style.
People expect that it's like Armstrong Style- a somewhat viable self defence martial style - just to have a rug pulled from under'em when it's revealed that it's both fake in real world and in world of the fiction.
I recall that in the fight with Competitor you had a "secret attack option" after second fail- you still would fail, but now by a foul play not by just trying a fake martial art against a real one.
Also, I swear to god if the kids are a Lord of the Flies reference
Plus quite interestinggly- in Pointless (Scholar of Willbur Sin and Infinity Unfolds version that is) the Franchise seems to be a "replacement" for Joy. Just like it it gives the adicts (this time followers of the idea) a way to feel nothing, or far more- feel like they are better than they really are. Makes the world of Lisa that bit more complex- there is far more places where people loose themselves after dispair hits.

I just thought of a thoery about the choice of 88 as the franchise's number (apart from 8's resembelance to infinity). The people who play The Game are known as the central powers and one of their members has the word "Ottoman" in their name. The connection to the world war 1 faction is apparant. The central powers consisted of monarchies who had been long on the decline and had all collapsed by the end of the first world war, paving the path for new ideologies to take power. An ideology associated with 88 took hold in germany, promising a better future. It was also based on death just like the infinity franchise.
The dinner scene, I believe, represents the end of long-standing traditions and institutions that had been in place for hundreds of years. The central powers were so absorbed in their game that they failed to see the threat until it was too late. They also refuse to adapt to the changing circumstances when they refuse alex's suggestion to leave, dying stubborn and stuck in their ways.

The last route is sad. Alex didn't have the best upbringing. He was influenced by factors out of his control, his poverty, his consistent lack of responsible adults. But it was *his* life, the unique set of circumstances that had led to that moment. And the Franchise took that away from him and replaced it with nothing but endless anger driven to lash out against everything and everyone with no particular sense or point, leaving him nothing but a withered husk by the end.

lisa the pointless has some of thr best intentional and accidental gsme design especially the way the combo system is used
i love the combo system because it lets to change your skill mid turn so you can change what skill you do in reaction to what happened so far in the turn which is why you cant so a combo for alexs best moves for reacting to enemys like disarming chop and dodge
and all of the combo moves like throat slit and painted red comboing with statuses it adds so many layers to the combat
not to mention the amazing world building especially in downtown the way arnold is introduced instantly shows off his power and his personality though his lack of selebration or change in his expression and its not too dissimilar to the way pyramid head is introduced in silent hill 2
the way the infinity franchise is built up is amazing
i also love the way alex is introduded and how the player can instantly connect to him because anyone would want to get off garbage island
these are the reasons why this is my favorite rpg and why im thankful this video exists since its really the only video about this games lore infinity unfolds specifically

As for aikido I’ve heard so take it with a grain of salt that “stress tested” aikido tends to look and perform very similar to judo/jiujitsu which makes sense as they are both Japanese in origin and jiujitsu being japans premier grappling system.

Even if I fail in the end and obtain nothing, even if my life was a complete failure, so what?

You can call me crazy, you can call me an idiot, you can call me stubborn, you can call me stupid…

I knew of both LISA and F&H for way before and while I thought they were interesting titles, it was only after that I stumbled upon your videos that I made the decision to play both F&H 1 and 2, as well as LISA: The Painful, Joyful and even Hopeful, didn't know of The Pointless, but I'm going to stop myself from going any further through the video and playthrough it myself, as to not be spoiled. It's a retelling of Joyful that now includes multiple paths and a plethora of new areas expanding it into 10+ hour game and it also has a Disco Elysium-like monologue mechanic that changes depending on how violent, talkative or adventurous Buddy is throughout your play through. I think you'd really like it a lot since it meshes well with these narrative/analysis videos.

But this video gives me a much better appreciation for Pointless. It really digs in different philosophical directions to the original. And representing the peak of nihilistic death-drive as a literal Multi Level Murdering pyramid scheme is just special.
