She's probably my favorite gymnast of all time, her routines just seemed ahead of their time, & she was the perfect combination of grace & athleticism, such beautiful legs & her technique, omg. No wonder she won 3 of the 4 golds in event finals.
She got one medal in all the 6 female events. It is stilll a matter of discuss today. Even though Shushunova won for just .25 pts. is questionable...Silivas was more classy than every AA champion back then until today! They were the last years of the URSS domination. Now it's USA thanks to the change of the FIG's code which destroyed the artistry of this sport.
@QPHashSS77 Artistry în gymnastics is defined by the grace of the small gestures (such as the ones they used to do with their hands) and dance moves (those that look like ballet-moves), also by their posture, the way they curve or by their slow movements. In Today's gymnastics there's no time for that, 'cause the Code of points is all about crazy acrobatics. For that, you don't need grace, you need speed, power and momentum (which is also fine, but different). That's why there's less artistry în the sport. You can't dance, do small gestures or move slow when you're doing acrobatics like Biles.
@QPHashSS77 No, it isn't, by the current Code of points. Tho' I'm defiening it from a the perspective of the general audience, who knows nothing or little of the Cop.
I know: her layout salto's are beautiful. When you see them in slo-mo you can see how she "makes" the landings, by kicking out with her landing leg; there is no way she is NOT going to land perfectly. Her technique was just so perfect: I would say that she is technically one of the best gymnasts of all time.
She's a master of equilibrium and she's remarcably strong. Had she been born this day, she would have never achieved so much. Grace and equilibrium don't matter anymore in gymnastics. It's all about crazy acrobatics. Usually I don't complain about that, 'cause I enjoy that too, but, I think, watching Silivas makes you nostalgic for old-school gymnastics.
So right about this gymnast and how the game has changed. It's all about mechanical acrobatics and power moves sans the level of control and grace requires even as recently as this performance by Silivas. Do not shoot the messenger but how many times have we seen stars like Simone Biles overpower it and step outside the lines in floor ex routines. Bigger, faster, higher...does it mean better?
I’ve always believed she lost the AA gold in this apparatus. She had a slight flaw on the AA Beam, if she had replicated the 10 she would have shut the door on Shoushounova. Such is sport! Yet to me and many she is the undisputed queen of true artistic gymnastics. Long live the queen!
I think she would have succeeded. The training methods have changed since then and she would have been allowed to eat more. They were starved and overtrained, no time or energy left for the body to build extra muscle
she performed a double double on like a 4" spring on floor, springs are now i think 10" so she would EASILY be performing a biles on floor considering that she would get more spring and she would have more muscle
Non sono d'accordo, avrebbe ottenuto comunque il massimo. Oggi le ginnaste sembrano saltimbanchi mascolinizzati privi di grazia! Nadia, Olga, Daniela, Elena... sembravano farfalle 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
One of the greatest, if not THE greatest beam sets under Olympic pressure and in the days when scored carried over into the AA. I never tire of watching Daniela's exquisite gymnastics. To me she'll always be the best.
I keep coming back here every once in a while. One of the greatest Olympic beam routines in history imo. And in the days when scores carried over into the AA.
Daniela Silivas..legendary strength, precision, personality and power(under control) And so graceful. Her back saltos are so tight and perfect. Near seamless transition and execution. The poise under pressure and "can-do" attitude, great sportsmanship, performing with all eyes on them, may be the most impressive traits of high-level gymnasts. Talk about mental strength! Such a brilliant and memorable act she was.
Incredible! Daniela is one of the all-time greats! This was the only perfect 10 scored on the balance beam at the 1988 Olympics, and it will go down in history as the last. One of the best beam routines of all time!
No doubt one of the best beam routines of ALL time (up to even today (2017)) I'm still totally blown away by it. 1988-1989 - best time for beam routines (considering Chinese Yang Bo and Ukrainian/Soviet Olesya Dudnik from 1989)
I remember watching this at the time it was broadcast, it seemed to me that Daniela was just flawless in all her disciplines. My friends though I had a screw loose because I had become more interest in watching women's gymnastics than in fiddling with my motorbike, ha! they just didn't get it. Soooo good to see this again.
I am sure it was Maria Cosma. The coaches at Deva who had the amazing Romanian team of 1987-1988 were Octavian Belu, Adrian Stoica(stan?) Maria Cosma and overall Adrian Goreac. An amazing team of coaches for an amazing team of gymnasts.
How could you possibly give her less than 10 for this? This deserved a 20. This should be shown to all young gymnasts as THE textbook beam routine. Just look how square her shoulders are on the two layouts: millimetre-correct placement is required to get it that perfect. If the shoulder drifts slightly the layout is out of the beam. She was such a great technician-all of her elements were performed to the fullest. Look at the leg extension on the layouts-perfect splits.
she is just adorable!! and this routine was just about perfect. haha, perfect in this cop, i would just say hiting perfect 180 on one or 2 leaps would make this absolutely perfect. but i just love her aggression on her 2 series and the dismount. fun to watch
Las americanas pueden ser perfectas y hacer ejercicios de alto grado d dificultad, pero les falta definitivamente, la elegancia de las rumanas. .. Para mí, las rumanas, siempre serán las mejores 😍😍
I miss this gym of 80s. Today we have robots with no grace. I still love gym, evolution was not good enough. Only Khorkina has my ️heart of the not só new gym. Happily we can see Oksana still. Old gym was the best for me.
Daniela is the GOAT. Better than Olga, Nadia and Simone. There's an otherworldliness to her routines and the way she executes her skills. Her '88 Olympic floor routine is sublime. She's brilliant! In my book, she's the GOAT!!
I think she has two 88 Olympic floor routines. The one that had less tumbling and more artistic expression is the one that is just off the charts. I've never seen a floor routine more inspired, more creative and more beautiful. I'll try to find a link and add it to my response.
Nobody abuse her,she loved to do gimnastic and did very well. She told later in a interview she really enjoyed doing gimnastic. She had natural skills and since was very litlle make tumbling home and her mother took her to gimnastic center.Ske liked and become great. When changed political regim in RO changed coach too.She refused to work with new coach because she felt very good with first coach,so end her career.Look for her interview.
So, I'm just saying... this routine is brilliant!! With that being said.. from 88 to 19 it's a huge difference in the scoring. It's not the gymnasts but the level of criticism of the judges. This routine was 10 on execution in 88, however, it's probably a 9.2 in 2019. This is why you can't compare gymnasts from the past to now, because the scoring its totally different.
@Sweetcleopatraa Oh, i didn't know she wobbled on beam in AA. I thought it was just that teeny hop on vault. But her floor was probably my fav floor routine of all time. She was probably one of the most well rounded gymnasts I've ever seen. Now that I think of it, is it just me, or did gymnasts in general back then and in the 90s seem more well rounded than gymnasts today?
In spite of the wobble, Silivas still deserved to win. She should have been at least .30 ahead of Shushunova after the compulsories but the judges gave Shushunova high marks she did not deserve in that phase of the competition, except on vault.
I know the mount she used is not ln populararity but they are beautiful , especially the way she did it here. With technical ability at it's prime I'd love to see Simon Biles v Daniella Silivas it be interesting only because Biles has pushed so much you can do with the sport. do D-score taken awake E score is still capped at 10 so it would just be for bragging rights. This would also have to be after the Silivas is entered into the code of points only because it's the move that cemented Silivas' name & legacy in the the WAG FX event because of it's high degree of difficulty. It's nice to go back and see were it evolved from. Whether it's due to infamous moves,(The tragedy of Thomas salto & Soviet WAG Mukina, Innovator on bars Olga Korbut to then quickly having her interesting death defying flipping off the top bar that later used by the CHN to give them a great edge in the event. The list goes on.)) b 1st that happen far a favorite sport has come from yo where it is yoday with all the ups downs and ugly moments (from the Nasser scandal we still haven't healed from, to the infamous birth certificate isdues in 2008) Regardless i will always love gymnastics.
You're totally right. Silivas was far superior overall in Seoul... She was the queen of the competition. But the judges had other ideas in mind... A soviet gymnast had to win the AA title.
Not ALL Americans. Cathy Rigby, Kathy Johnson, and Shannon Miller to name a few always showed graceful gymnastics on beam. And I admire Romanian gymnasts very much, especially my favorite Silivas. But after she and Dobre retired and Belu took over his gymnasts were often robotic with no grace or dance skills. This is not to say Americans didn't follow suit. Raisman is an eye sore, Wieber isn't much far behind, neither is Shawn Johnson. Power acrobatics isn't Artistic Gymnastics to me.
Agreed-with the exception of Alexandra Marinescu few Romanians of the '90s showed any grace, elegance or dance skills of any kind. Not to say that our American gymnasts are any better, again with a few exceptions.
She still deserved to win. Shushunova was over scored in compulsories. Silivas was far superior to her and all the other gymnasts in that phase of the competition.
Hands up if you’re here for a bit of nostalgia from one of the all time greats ❤

Current gymnasts would do WELL to study her.
@QPHashSS77 look at the video

Her mount is one of my all time favorites. It's so unique and original. Today's mounts are so boring
This mount has her name because she was the first to do it
Such brilliance...notice the hands...which has been lost in todays gymnastics.
+Kenneth Emerson Yes. Her hands were amazing. They don't bother with the artistic expression any more. Such a shame.
A eso lo llamo elegancia
This is one of the most perfect routines I've ever seen! She has such grace and power!
One of the greatest, if not THE greatest beam sets under Olympic pressure and in the days when scored carried over into the AA. I never tire of watching Daniela's exquisite gymnastics. To me she'll always be the best.
This was the last ever Olympic Perfect 10.000 on balance beam.
and well deserved, I'm on team shushunova, but this is my favorite beam routine of all time TF version
QPHashSS77 Miller scored 9.975 on that as vault .
Daniela, The best gymnast ever. So solid and full of grace. Se deserved de All Around gold.
Oh really ???
I love her confidence. It's such a joy to watch her.
I keep coming back here every once in a while. One of the greatest Olympic beam routines in history imo. And in the days when scores carried over into the AA.

Yes, and all the 10s, on Olympic beam, were all earned by Romanians.
She had the most beautiful line of every event
No doubt one of the best beam routines of ALL time (up to even today (2017)) I'm still totally blown away by it.
1988-1989 - best time for beam routines (considering Chinese Yang Bo and Ukrainian/Soviet Olesya Dudnik from 1989)
The last perfect 10 for balance beam in Olympic history.
One of the best since nadia
She actually smiled during her floor routine in pure joy and love of what she was doing.

Without a doubt, the best that has existed until today. I'm a fan of her.
There is something so mesmerizing about her beam mount. I love watching it over and over.
THE BEST ! so moving to see a real talent that way she has something more than just the work, a real unique gymnast
It is simple, conventional,no originality or creativity! She was the best at floor ,no here!
@@whocares1481 This is one of the most unsual mouts. "No creativity" for sure 🤦♀️
I have long viewed this as the best balance beam performance of all time.
Perfection in motion
Meu esporte predileto desde criança oooo saudades.
Essa ginasta Daniela Silivas maravilhosa, Olga Kobyrt, Nádia Comanaci e Elena Shusunova
Doesn't get any better. Never has, never will.
Amazing routine!! Well deserved the 10.00!! 🎉🎊
Shes my coach!
+Samantha Pierce tell her that she was the best.
Luis Zamora there is an hour interview with her in English on UA-cam. A must see!
SHE WAS THE BEST!
Just amazing! No more

Impresionant , magnific exercitiu!!!

Super concordo, principalmente as americanas
Fernanda Martins agreed
Absolutely brilliant!

I figured it out. It's the compulsory FX in the '88 Olympics that is so AMAZING!! UTTER PERFECTION!!!
She is doing it with perfection ❤
Best gymnast of the 1980's.
Perfection 😻
PERFECT
Perfeição! !! 💖👏👏👏👏
She was a coach at my camp
She is so graceful, but talented in her flips! Sooooo ladylike also!
She was magnificent !
Un bun national desavarsit.
The best ever !
Superba gimnastă! Sigura pe ea.❤
That was fantastic!
SpecTACular!!!

Soaring legend always.....
2:10 check out those abs.
Maravilhosa !
great gymnastics, FABULOUS perm!
I miss the days of a perfect 10!! She was amazing!! Now that routine would be picked apart like a vulture!!
MARVELOUS......!!!❣️💛💙
she is the most technical gymnast of all time
I consider this her masterpiece beam routine ! she like her teammates were the most polished on beam at Seoul !
Solid performance and quite a head of hair
LEGEND! ❤️
Cea mai completa gimnasta din toate timpurile
she is the most technical gymnast of all time
She had so much grace and lightness in her performances. So different from the robotic Romanians of the 90s.
シリバスちゃん大好きです😊
Perfect!!
she got it!!! wow!! I think 10 represent her performance!!
So, I'm just saying... this routine is brilliant!! With that being said.. from 88 to 19 it's a huge difference in the scoring. It's not the gymnasts but the level of criticism of the judges. Perfection
Одна из самых элегантных гимнасток!!
omg .. that hair! .. it is cute actually .. it was the 80's .. disco and all ... breathtaking performance!
She scored a 10 but she ALMOST bobbled on the mount.
Are dismounted back tucks supposed to be like that?
@Sweetcleopatraa Oh, i didn't know she wobbled on beam in AA. I thought it was just that teeny hop on vault. But her floor was probably my fav floor routine of all time. THAT was a 10!
La mejorrrr
Perfect....in 1988 i was 1 year old...great performance. I have to say that i think that the beam was longer than now..am I right?
Perfectly 👍👍👍💋
What a unique routine. Does anyone know who her coach/choreographer is?
lovely.
In spite of the wobble, Silivas still deserved to win. She should have been at least .30 ahead of Shushunova after the compulsories but the judges gave Shushunova high marks she did not deserve in that phase of the competition, except on vault.
These are national treasures for Roumania 😊.
@bertera1614 No-the beam still has the same proportions. More spring-loaded perhaps.
holy crap this chick is fierce!!!!
the best

Vanda Hadarean was very graceful back in the 90s...
You're totally right. Silivas was far superior overall in Seoul... She was the queen of the competition. But the judges had other ideas in mind... A soviet gymnast had to win the AA title.

Cătălina Ponor, Andreea Raducan, Ana Porgas, Maria Roșu, Simona Amanar just to name a few extremly graceful gymnasts trained by Belu.
This is what you call OVERWHELMING!!!!!!!!
Agreed-with the exception of Alexandra Marinescu few Romanians of the '90s showed any grace, elegance or dance skills of any kind. Not to say that our American gymnasts are any better, again with a few exceptions.
is this balence beam longer than now??
I'm curious who disliked this?:-)))
THIS!
If she had done that in the AA, she would have beaten Shushunova (RIP).
i watched your performanced in olympic games on seoul south korea and i think you are the best gymnast rather than shushunova.
Yes..Daniela was my favourite too but Sushunova was better really.
She still deserved to win. Shushunova was over scored in compulsories. Silivas was far superior to her and all the other gymnasts in that phase of the competition.
Is it trye that she was popular among the coaches and did they physically or
emotionally abuse her?
