Well, I guess it was Daniela Silivas' chance for a 'sudden death' rather which is referred to in the title. Both, Daniela and Elena were in the same rotation, separated by only 0.025 with Daniela in a slight lead, when they entered this final apparatus rotation and Daniela was the first of the group of nine to vault, Elena the last. With a perfect 10 Daniela could very suddenly have closed the door for Elena and become olympic champion, a 9.975 would have guaranteed her a tie at least. However, with the 9.95 which she received she left the door open and Elena on her part took her chance to become sole olympic champion with her perfect 10.

Wanna know how old I am? I was a teenager when the Seoul Olympics were happening. My biggest memories of Elena was watching the Seoul all-around. Silivas vs. Shushunova. LIVE! On the beam: when I saw Shushunova do her Rulfova, I asked what the heck was that? Mind you I didn't know much about gymnastics back then. When I saw her floor routine, I thought the Thomas tumble was crazy and her music was boring compared to Silivas. I didn't know at the time Shushunova was showing a mature flair to her floor work. However the biggest memory was the vault. Throughout the competition, I didn't see Shushunova smile at all. In fact I was telling my mother that the 'day of the smilers was gone.' Possibly because how I remembered Mary Lou always smiled. Sure Silivas smiled, but not as much. Anyways when Shushunova stuck her vault, that's when her smile came out. You can tell the pride in her face. She said it right there I did it!

For those of you who don't know much about gymnastic's. Durng these time's, there was much less spring in the floor matt's as compared to today. If they had the same matt's then, that they do now, they would be able to do more adnanced skill's of today! Back then, it was all power and strength!

It absolutely astounds me just what the human body is capable of doing. I thought that was Aurelia Dobre at 1:46. My granddaughter LOVES watching her and her sons (Cyrus, Darrius (Dory), twins, Marcus and Lucas) videos on YT. We have to monitor closely as some are not appropriate for her age, but nonetheless, the ones she can watch she throughly enjoys.

Yes, in this case & other sports eg archery, it means the last competitor has to get a perfect (higher) score to win.
