- Canada is known for its politeness and non-intervention so when you hear that Canada almost took over a small nation it is surprising. These are The Turks and Caicos Islands, and for decades they have debated joining Canada and leaving the British Overseas Empire. Will this unlikely union ever happen? Why hasn't it happened? Will Canada ever take over this tiny Caribbean Nation?

I honestly think that you don’t know much about the Turks and Caicos Islands. For one, there are a large amount of Canadians who call the Turks and Caicos home. The truth of the matter is, if the Turks and Caicos was to join Canada; this will not be beneficial to them as the biggest attraction to the Turks and Caicos where Canadians are concerned is it’s “Tax-Free.” That says a whole lot! For such reasons, joining these two won’t be beneficial for either parties.
It has nothing to do with corruption or any of that sort. It has to do with TAXES! Turks and Caicos Islands are a Tax Haven, under Canada, it won’t remain that way otherwise! Blah blah blah!

This isn't the first time Canada almost merged with some British colonies. There were also proposals like this with Jamaica in 1890, the Bahamas in 1911, Newfoundland in 1948, and Bermuda in 1949. Though out of all of these, only the merge with Newfoundland was successful.

Only 39k people live in the Turks & Caicos. That's almost exactly the same population as Nunavut, or 0.1% of the population of Canada. Even if every single one of them abandoned the islands and moved to the Canadian mainland, you'd never notice. Hell, Canada should be offering each resident quadruple their land in Canada plus cash in exchange for the islands. We're talking about a permanent, peaceful strategic land acquisition in an era when nobody is allowed to annex land anymore (except Russia apparently). WTF was Canada worried about? They couldn't handle the equivalent of adding one more large town to their gigantic nation because it might be a little bit poor??
Especially since Canada is bringing in 300k immigrants every year, 39k won't even register. The government probably doesn't want to leave it's comfort zone and go through the unification. But boy would I love to go to the CANADIAN Carribean.

@Lumieryn St. Pierre and Miquelon is a stretch. It was for a while fully integrated into France before acquiring its current status with significant self-government. There was talk of joining Canada during the fishing crisis of the 1980s but didn't amount to much. And unlike Britain, France would have gone ballistic if Canada attempted to annex the islands.

@Lumieryn It was their consolation prize for losing the Seven Years' War. Even if that was was a quarter of a millennium ago, people have not gotten over it yet. If Canada tried to reopen the Treaty of Paris, then maybe Quebec may think instead of pursuing independence straight up why not recreate New France and pursue independence from there.

Canada was so foolish for letting this opportunity go. Seriously, what kind of country in the world would refuse grabbing a piece of new territory, let alone tropical caribbean island, that a cold country like Canada sorely needs. Canadians hand out all of its winter tourism money to the US, Mexico and other caribbean destinations, why not keep that money in a tropical island of their own? This kind of stuff vexes me as a Canadian, and as someone else mentioned, the population of Turks and Caicos was and still is miniscule.
Well Canada isn't really known for a navy either. Along with having to deal with infrastructure, they'd also probably have to help make sure tourism isn't gonna overwhelm an island with under 40k people. Also, both are so demographically different, there's no surprise that they'd probably lose it to nationalism or Canadian division that we see right now.
Did you watch the video at all bud, both of the nations are different from one another especially when it comes to nationalism, as a Canadian it would be cool, but once again the funding wouldn't be going to certain province that we need funding.
You also need to realize that aside from the funding it would need to get up to Canadian standard of living until it got on it's feet the Canadian Government doesn't ever look for future endeavors that would cost in the short term but make up for in the long term. Why? Because the only thing any Government is focused on is staying in power and gaining more power. And while of course acquiring a bunch of islands for basically free would cost a bit in the short term but probably make up for tenfold in tourism it won't really get them any votes in the next election so they just don't give a crap. Just kind of shows how sad a state we're in.

I've heard about this possibility several times, but never had the full picture. Thanks so much for the deep dive! Considering how powerful provinces are in the Canadian federation (at least when compared to US states) I can definitely see how adding a new one in would be a pretty tricky political calculation, and probably never happen.

The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos used to be under the same government at one point and there were talks in the past about forming a federation….
I love in Canada….. and I would be very upset if TCI were to join any other country but the Bahamas… Canada needs to stay up North and worry about the land and resources they we are blessed with here and leave the Lucayan archipelago alone… very different culture and people that don’t need to be absorbed and lost in the sea of a huge country like Canada…

@@yannicklecours7408 not really tbh nobody rally taalks about us joining canda from wa i been hearing so yh but for my opinion i think it would be cool if we get annexed by canada but the only problem i really see with it is that there will be an influx of canadians coming in an d right now there is already a problem with foreigners since alot of islanders feel like foreigners are taking away their jobs and all that but other then that i dont mind us going canada even though i think its best to maybe stay with britain for now but ik joining canada will bring us alot of money so yeah that would be a huge benefit

Although there would be more foreigners we feel the same here in regards to foreigners, if you ever have the chance to visit big centres in Canada like Toronto for example, we also feel like the foreigners. Having said that, we are a country that accept and welcome anyone within our borders, we are one of the most multicultural countries in the world after all. I will admit that there would be an influx of investments coming in from Canada but I don't think it would be as much as you would think since land in the turks and caicos is already crazy expensive, I know because I researched it awhile ago. A big portion of the island is inhabited and developments on the island would create jobs for the islanders and that is at the same rate of pay than here, minimum wage or above. Islanders would get fully paid health care, canadian citizenship, passport, and honestly a more secure future and access to high paying jobs here too. Last thing we would want is for islanders to be out of work because all the jobs would go to canadians living on the mainland so there could be a contract for islanders to have priority over jobs on the island (we already have such contracts with the native population here) as you can tell im in strong support of this movement hahaha! thought I would give you my opinion as well

Seriously though, the Canadian relationship Cuba is often cited as a reason for not annexing the Turks and Caicos. It was said that pursuing an annexation would be perceived as "American type imperialism" to the Castro government.
With a new generation taking over in Cuba, having a long time friend close by, might be to Cuba's advantage.
(Cuba is a popular destination for Canadians because there aren't any Americans to annoy us there).
(Previously to the 1970's, Alberta received more than it got as "equalization payments". It is part of the Canadian Constitution for the federal government to distribute funds so that services in all provinces and territories are affordable).

As a Canadian, I fully support it. We have a million of people who go south every year during the winter, commonly referred to as the snowbirds, and if those people could instead visit another part of Canada and spend their money there then that would keep more money circulating in Canada. Also It would be a lot more appealing to Canadians rather than other southern destinations since we would be able to use Canadian dollars, be covered by our normal healthcare, not need a passport, and other advantages of travelling domestically. It might require some major investment to get it up to Canadian standards but long term it would probably pay off.
Only the Canadian government would reject this cuz it makes too much dollars and sense.
As a Canadian (who has never heard of this situation before), I love this idea.
Yes Canada would have to spend billions over many years on the islands to improve everything from buildings, roads, airports and technology, to teaching and training the whole population at every age level on a wide range of different topics.
BUT I think in the long run Canada will see a return on its investment. This will attract a lot of private investors and developers to the islands, who will be paying their fair share of taxes. Cruises will want to either start there or at least make stops there. Airlines would increase the frequency and routes to the islands. More Canadians would spend their tourism money in Canada instead of other Carrabian countries.
I don’t see Canada incorporating T&C as a colonizing move. I see it as a dysfunctional family. Canada (older sibling) sees T&C (younger sibling) not being treated nicely under the United Kingdom’s (the parent) rule. So the concerned older sibling agrees to let the young sibling to come live with them and to be treated as equals.

It has become a tax haven and quite rich compared to many of its neighbours and is mostly left alone by the UK
The UK had to intervene twice and remove their self governance because of the amount of corruption they face from being a self governing tax haven
The British effectively let them do whatever they want , which is exactly the problem when you have many extremely rich people storing money there that can easily bribe politicians

Basically the only times they have been a part of the islands politics is Ending self rule temporarily

2:25 Newfoundland and Labrador was in the same situation before it joined Canada. It was a self governing territory within the British empire, but it lost it's government after getting too corrupt. The obvious difference though is that Nfld is just off Canada's coast and Lbdr is physically attached, so they had links to the mainland already, culturally and economically.

A house in the Caicos would go from costing $40,000 for the natives, to well over $4 Million each. The population of the Caicos would end up homeless and/or unable to afford to continue living in their own houses if they joined Canada.
Or... would gain an extra $3,960,000 and move to another kinda not great Caribbean nation, or into a nice shed in Vancouver or Toronto.
I'm sure if the Islands did join Canada all the plans to dump a few hundred billion in making a tastefully tasteless resort would be killed by environmental concerns over some special snowflake bird or something.

You're just making up a strawman case that has no grounding in reality. Also a nation of 50,000 people has the economy of a small town, it's not going to be gutted by a massive influx of new recreation development and the follow on service industry created behind that.
Even your example doesn't make any sense, how does an offshore investors that just bought the land for pennies, magic up millions and then remove it? Isn't the point buying the land and then building on it? Or is this investor somehow moving faster than actual developers to buy the land and then turn a profit reselling it? I'm sure some would try but then you end up in a bidding war between buyers. Also if they buy the land cheap and resell it, no money would be removed because it was all outside money to start with.

If you did you could have filled in a few steps in the process, y’know, from experience, and not made another post of silly nonsense. No grounding in reality? Visit Whistler, BC sometime. It doesn’t have to happen far way. Try Aspen CO, or most of Hawaii if previous examples elude you. This is not mom and pop dollars at work on a budget vacation, this is investment money, that improves the land, sells it for a mammoth profit and moves that money back into global circulation. Turks and Caicos is fine being what it is. The west has killed enough of the planet this way already.
I think the housing prices in Turks and Caicos would go way up, If it joined Canada, of course. But I think it would work out anyway because the government would have to acquire the island with a commission for Canadians to buy some land from the natives. Then the native young adults would most likely move to Canada for college and work, allowing more property to come available.

I'd support it from Canada! The money thing doesn't seem like that huge an issue, the islands are far more densely populated and easily accessible than the north is, and has a very tiny population. I would think lifting the islands' economy up to the same level as Canada's wouldn't be that difficult. I would rather they become a province if so, territories seem like an archaic colonial type situation. Honestly every part of a country should have the same level of self-governance, whatever that standard is for the country in question.

The "archaic colonial type situation" benefits the City of London and its global offshoring network so it's unlikely it would have ever been fully incorporated into Canada. These islands are and aren't part of the UK depending on who you're asking. They're part of the UK in the sense that they are a safe, dependable and easy places to offshore money from the city of London, but not part of the UK enough where you can legally abide by another nations tax laws without you or your piles of wealth ever really leaving the city of London. The UK itself has seen its global influence decrease over the past several decades yet still around 40% of global transactions run through the city of London.

I'm sure they receive some benefits from such an immense financial operation but probably only a fraction of the billions we're talking about. They do also receive funding and investment from the UK and diplomatic guidance. Instead of the islanders having to live with a government rife with corruption the UK came in and cleaned up for them. That being said as a Brit the UK is hardly without corruption itself

I like the idea of Turks and Caicos joining Canada. However, it would cost billions to build proper infrastructure on the island. The island joining as a province with such a small population would piss off the existing larger 3 territories. So it would join either as a territory or an extension of NS. The people of T and C might hate Canadians building roads, schools, hospitals, condos, hotels, and housing. The islands are tiny and probably several million Canadians would try to live there permanently or for some parts of the year. Migrants from surrounding nations might use T&C as a short cut to seeking asylum. T&C locals would probably feel threatened by the wave of tourists, new residents and asylum seekers landing on their shores.
TLDR: I am pro T&C joining Canada. But there would be problems.
Let the private sector do it! The profits could be tremendous!! We are talking about the only territory that is not a fucking iceberg and probably could offer some affordable properties for Canadians! I mean is a win win!

Its not mentionned but this island in particular was a great trade interest during colonial era of Canada. A fair bit of merchandise were traded between Canada and that small island both under british influence

Healthcare is not Federal. Sure some of the money comes from the Federal government. They are setup and administered by the province and territories and vary on coverage. If it joins under Nova Scotia it could just piggy back of their established system.
@@Azsunes In the Territories, healthcare is federally managed, like just about everything. They have some level of power for themselves, but it's nowhere near what the provinces have. There is also no way any province wants any part of Turk and Cocos. That would make THEM responsible for those costs and provide very little advantage, if any.

Canada already has great relations with a Caribbean country - Trinidad and Tobago. It's like the United States' Puerto Rico without being owned by the country. There is an extremely large Trinidadian and Tobagonian population in Canada, approximately 78 thousand people. Both countries' defense forces train together, students in T&T have opportunities with Canadian universities, and the two are very high in trade. T&T might be the country Canada trades with the most out of any other country in the Caribbean, but that I do not know. Many Canadians travel to Trinidad and Tobago as well. Beaten only by the United States, Canada is the country the second most amount of people travel from in T&T. The two countries have very good relations.
I was born there and it has a lot of oil and gas there.

I think it would be great for everyone. A tropical "domestic" vacation destination for Canada and a tourist hotspot for international people as well. I'm sure it would be a net positive. Plus the freedom of islanders to join and access Canada's markets and trading partners.

With Britain rarely ever getting involved in its politics and vacationing isn’t as easy as a domestic flight
it’s effectively become a mostly independent tax haven
With the British intervening to stop the massive amount of corruption in its government
But if integrated under Canada , many Canadians would migrate there and the islands population would quickly be dominated by Canadians and it would have basically no say in Canadian government with the central Canadian government having a lot of authority over them
Compared to them not having a say in British politics , but instead rule them selves whilst Britain has a small amount of authority over them

As a Canadian, I've been on this island many times in the Providenciales area. And I really wished they took over this place, I had a great time there.
Edit: I just realized, how amazing it would of been to be able to smoke a fat joint on the beach while sipping a cold Smoothie at Turks & Caicos without getting your hand smacked by cops. Pretty sure I would of been living there full time by now.

Having lived through those times and as a young adult then, I was all for the idea. I read a news story that the reason the federal government stalled over this until it went away is they were concerned that if it went through, Canada would get accused of being Imperialist. But I also suspect they not want to disappoint the islanders so they stalled it and different people in the government could be stuck to worry about it.
But I thought it would have been one heck of a deal being able to go to Canadian resorts in the Caribbean and keep the money in the country.

Your well-researched video reminds me of our own history in the US; particularly, our early history when there was vigorous discussion of the US taking over Canada as part of our Revolutionary War. Religious differences (including anti-Catholic bigotry in the US) prevented Canada from becoming of the United States. Ultimately, this has been a good thing for both nations. For these past 155 years since Canada was granted independence by Britain, we have been most friendly neighbors - let's keep it that way!
The thing is that when the US revolt it was not Canada but the Province of Quebec and the majority of the population was french.
When the soldiers that want Quebec to join the revolution came to Montreal (Ville-Marie), the french refuse to join because the catholic churches that were very powerful at the time forbid the population to join the rebellion( Catholics that accept to join the rebellion were told that if they died they wouldn’t be buried in a catholic cemetery and they won’t be able to go to paradise).When the envoys heard the news they burned the port of Montreal than left.It was later because of the success of the revolution, that loyalist came to the north and stole the lands and the homes of the french Canadians.

This is one thing that has always bothered me about Canada. We had all these opportunities to get better land with better weather. Like we could have owned half of Washinton if we fought the USA over it. But it would be a costly war. And you can argue about the ethics about going to war. But even when it's a peaceful trade-off that only costs money we still don't do it. Like we didn't even negotiate with Russaia to buy Alaska. America was the only one interested and like we could of had Alaska but we are just to complacent.
I think in both of those cases, it was the British government that was complacent, and their inability to stand up for Canadian interests is what lead to desires for Canuckistani independence.

Basically similar reasons to why the US hasn't officially incorporated Puerto Rico. It'd be a *massive* fiscal ordeal to bring the island up to standard, would be a massive drain on welfare systems, and probably be internally contentious on the island because of its corruption problems being unfit for leadership without huge overhauls.

I can't cite the source, but I recently saw something on tv about this, and the show said that there has never been a serious push or proposal by any of the two governments for Turks and Caicos to join Canada. The show stated that it's always been a rumour and no one knows exactly where and how it started.

As a Canadian I actually don't approve of this, here's my reason: Canada has this imaginary vision of multiculturalism with the Indigenous, French, and British as well as protecting their languages, etc. I think in my opinion it would wreck our vision, by also their language and culture.
