    You’ve commented before on the challenge of growing lychee here where the winters are wet. Have you taken any steps to protect the tree from excessive moisture during the winter? Slightly raised bed? Amended soil to increase drainage? Plant in an area under the eaves where the ground stays dry during the winter?

    • @TropicalGardenGuy
      @TropicalGardenGuy  2 роки тому +2

      Lol… “fortunately” weve been dry. But I did recently take an airlayer from this tree and plant it on a raised bed for better control of irrigation and fertilizer.
      New video about that is in the works.. Jeff

    My sweetheart lychee fruit is ripening up also. I only got 12 fruits but my tree is still small. Mine are still half green. It was 106 today at my farm in yuba county. Even my mango new growth was wilting during peak heat.

    I have a mauritius lychee here in San Leandro growing in a pot for a year. Hope to put it in the ground soon. I am afraid it wont have enough heat like in Modesto to fruit.

    • @TropicalGardenGuy

      Right now I have the pot against my house's south east facing stucco wall and it's doing great. I really have no other southern wall with soil available other than a southeast wooden fence. I may just keep it in a pot and just keep up potting...

    I watched your video last week. I wanted to grow lychee. I went to Asian store looking for lychees. Unfortunately, they don't have anymore in the store. I intended to buy the fruits so I could get seeds to germinate and to grow. I am wondering if you have any air laying you like to sell or maybe selling some seeds? I want to germinate this year to get a head start instead of waiting for next year. Thank you.

    Impressive having such a decent sized tree after only 5 years. What your secret for this growth? Brilliant having such a large crop after only a few years. There's a lot of variability in 9b climates. What sets your trees apart to produce such great results from all of your tropicals?

    • @TropicalGardenGuy
      @TropicalGardenGuy  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Jim, Ive been experimenting with tropicals for about 50 years.
      Im under the impression that most folks dont have enough time to research the those small variable factors to achieve success in our marginal climates.
      They read some book, apply what they read in their garden and fail. Only to say it cant be done.
      Thats why I dont consider myself as an educator, but more of an influencer. I try to influence gardeners who are interested in growing rare stuff to see that it can be done, by showing the end results of my garden experiments.

    • @jimr4354
      @jimr4354 2 роки тому +1

      @@TropicalGardenGuy I agree re research. Many just listen to garden personalities and garden staff who say something tropical will never grow in their climate and don’t challenge the ill informed belief. It’s about priorities though re time. It only takes 15 to 30 minutes to read how to grow something in a microclimate. Choose a fruit like mango then there’s other factors like positioning too but for most people 6 or so trees is easily possible if time is not on their side. So many people just plant without preparation then fail to water even and wonder why plants fail.
      You’ve done a brilliant job succeeding with your trees. Ideal hot microclimate. Where are you in north California? There’s so many 9B climates and I know growers in Melbourne Australia who would love to grow mangoes and so many others and struggle with cold wet winters on the coast probably similar to San Francisco. Then there’s central north Florida which is considered 9B too. Melbourne gets freezing mornings in mid winters and days are cloudy rarely get above 10C (50F). Late winter now and warming marginally around the high 50F’s.

      Im in Modesto, Calif. About 80 mi to the east of San Fransisco.
      From what Ive seen your temps are very simular to ours, except our summers are hotter. More Like Alice Springs.

    • @jimr4354
      @jimr4354 2 роки тому

      @@TropicalGardenGuy The Alice has relatively short winters. Cold nights near freezing and about mid to high 60's F during the day. Though been there on 2 days with rain all day and didn't go above 40F! That's rare. More of a desert climate. 5 hours drive from Uluru. Yes gets damn hot there. Regularly over the century mark for over 6 months. I believe the amount of sun hours in winter makes all the difference. Inland it is sunnier away from the coast less exposed to wind chill from the south in our case as well. We get Antarctic blasts with some cold fronts that bring quite cold temps by temperate standards. Near freezing but no snow on the coast. The southern coast is like coastal California though LA is far warmer than any southern capital including Sydney during winter. More of a warm and humid climate for 9 months there though being on the east coast.

  • @ghost2k25

    A couple questions
    How do you prevent the leaves from getting brown tips
    2. What do you add in the soil so the leaves turn dark green fast
    3. What is the ph of your soil, my lychee Logan tree are growing extremely slow

    • @TropicalGardenGuy
      @TropicalGardenGuy  2 роки тому +1

      Hard to say without knowing all the growing conditions , but brown tips are often caused by salty water .
      I almost never add nitrogen fertilizer . Better to try 0.10.10.
      My soil ph is around 7.5 to 8, I add sulpher each year, and a thick mulch layer.

  • @MaMaMae_

    HELP PLEASE! I'm in zone 9b and my young lychee WAS doing well in container. We put it into the ground back in March this year, was doing well until the latest heat wave, likely dehydrated and dropped all leaves. It is hanging in there and has regrowth but is struggling, and is less than half the size it was before :( I put up a shade to protect it from further burn/heat and a thick layer of mulch. Any tips on nursing it back to health - fertiziler, move to greenhouse etc? How long did your tree take to get to it's size?

    • @TropicalGardenGuy
      @TropicalGardenGuy  2 роки тому +2

      Let me guess, did you use fertilzer heavy with nitrogen? I dont use high nitrogen fertilizer.
      My tree has been in ground 5 years.
      Always use a thick much that is light , airy and contains leaves and twigs

    • @MaMaMae_
      @MaMaMae_ 2 роки тому +1

      @@TropicalGardenGuy I used the jobes vegetable and tomatoe organic granular fertilizer that i think i saw from one of your other videos :) only once and very minimal. The Longan loved it! Currently pine needles as mulch. Think its not handling the stress of the heat?

    • @TropicalGardenGuy
      @TropicalGardenGuy  2 роки тому +1

      Hard to say for sure. it all depends on the amount of fertilizer along with your individual soil.
      Since everyone’s soil has many individual variables, PH is a biggy.
      you’ll have to experiment ,
      Perhaps when the tree was in pot it had a slightly acidic soil, then when you put inground, your soil was alkaline.
      I usually allow a tree to recover from transplanting b4 i try to push growth with fertilizer.
      For the short term, maybe a light shade cloth during the heat of the day?
      Best Wishes… Jeff
