Worsted Weight DOESN'T Exist (Kinda): Worsted yarn is not a weight!

- Crocheter and Knitter might be completely confused when I tell you, worsted yarn is not a weight! Worsted yarn is a type of yarn that is often confused with being a weight, but this is not the case. Worsted yarn is actually a type of spinning technique that produces a smooth and even yarn with long fibers.
This type of yarn is often used for knitting and weaving projects, as it produces an even fabric with no knots or lumps. While worsted yarn may be used to create different weights of fabric, it's important to note that worsted yarn itself is not a weight measurement.

In the UK and Europe, ‘worsted weight’ is called Aran. Nice explanation.
I live in England and it's interesting to me that worsted weight yarn isn't said over here, instead we'd say Aran or a category 4. The next weight down we call DK as in Double knit or category 3. Mind you, I don't often see yarns telling you it's weight in a category. Confusing me completely when I first started to crochet. I could be wrong but didn't you do a vid a while back explaining the categories. That vid was so useful. This one I loved as I love history and the 'why' behind why we say or do things. Yes I did drive my mother mad, my father on the other hand was a walking encyclopaedia! :)
I did do the yarn weight video. Have u ever played the game "telephone" as a kid? The first kid whispers to the next. By the time it gets to the 10th person, the original say is messed up. I think after the term jump the pond, it got messed up😂
@@LittlejohnsYarn we call it elephant whispers here, but yes! Just that. Love all your vids! Thanks for taking the time to do the research and put the vid out. If you're ever over this side of the pond Norfork is a lovely area to stay as is my neck of the woods East Yorkshire.
Fascinating! Thank you!
"I never knew that after 60 years knitting!"
I KNEW IT!!!!!! Thank you for confirming that I wasn’t losing it. I’m always having to compare them to make sure if I’m mixing them that they match up. Fantastic
Very good! My Gran was a knitter from the UK and she always called yarn in general worsted. I've been learning the terminology as I go. What still messes me up is when you listen to someone who is from Europe or Australia and they use terms for the number of plys in a yarn. I think Hobbii does that for some of their products and I have to read the descriptions of the yarn carefully or I could end up with a fingering weight yarn when I want something thicker. Thanks for sharing.
I look for Aran when buying yarn. I am from the UK. I was confused by Worsted as well and I had to dig tonnes of information.
Thank you for this video, it's great 👍
Glad I could help 🤗
This is so helpful. I got crocheting pattern that used this term and got so confused
I learned to crochet at age 12 back in 1973. Medium weight yarn that you use a size H or I hook with was called "4 ply" for decades. Because it has 4 plys of yarn spun together.
Crazy they don't use the term anymore
I always thought of worsted like women's jean sizes, no two of the same size were the same! Now a days I either use wpi or eyeball it.
Also, FANTASTIC video! You're incredibly informative and wonderful to watch! ❤️🧶🐑
Women's Jeans 😂😂😂😂😂 thank you for watching 😉
Absolutely fascinating. And now I am so much more informed. Thank you

Oh how fun!!! I love the way you explained this. It’s nice having some history go along with the term. ❤️👌🏿😇
Thank you ❤️
Amazing! Love anything history and crochet, my two favorite things. I have been crocheting for a while, but didn't know about the location in England. Could you do one on DK? I keep hearing about this yarn, but it sure is a mystery. Thank you so much. I really enjoy listening to your tips, historical, and anything to do with crochet. Thank you.
I always learn something from you; thank you for sharing!!

Very interesting, thank you x
You're welcome 🤗
Very interesting. Thank you for the research.
Can we just stick to 1,2,3,4, ect weight ! 😂
Right!!!!!
I'm new to yarn & crochet. I have had so much confusion over "worsted". I look for the weight or size then I see something labeled worsted & I'm like, okay but what's the weight? & don't get me started on crochet terms being different from US vs UK. If someone doesn't specify, as a noob at least, I have to ask. Drives me crazy!
😂😂i can only if imagine! In US box stores everything is numbered.
I love when you do these videos 🥳🥳🥳 Wait! Your not married anymore 🥺
Thank you ❤️ and freshly divorced woman 😉
