Have had it for about 3 months now and it's my go-to whenever the TV comes on. You did an excellent job of describing the difference between it and can headphones. But it's one of those things that's sort of hard to describe. Some times the sound during a movie is so intense, especially during action sequences you swear it's sound filling the room. Nope, I can place the unit on my TV viewing chair and walk a few feet away and maybe barely hear anything. It really is an interesting achievement in tech.
My only complaint is if you slouch in your chair with your head against the back of where you're sitting the rubber band that joins the two speaker units digs into your neck. It's not very comfortable. A small neck pillow just above the band. has fixed this, making it more comfortable for slouched long movie viewing. But the angle changes, moving the speakers just a little closer to your ears. Which is no big deal.
If you're looking for a device that is more comfortable to wear for long periods, and if you wear glasses and can style headphones dig into the bows of your glasses making your ears hurt....this is the wireless speaker solution that will work for you.

DESIGN, CONVENIENCE & COMFORT ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE
Using the NS7 for 3 months now.
The primary reasons why you will buy this product:
You do not want to use over ear headphones as they become heavier and sweatier after prolonged use.
You do not want to use in ear - ear buds as they cause ear pain & irritation after prolonged use. Also ear buds fitment is a big issue with many people.
You want to use the speakers mainly indoors and do not need active noise cancellation as your usage is only or music, movies or games.
So if you are someone like me who wants a bluetooth speaker with acceptable sound quality which could be used easily, comfortably and something that rests on your shoulders around your neck and can be used for longer period of time without giving you any pain to your ears, no sweat, or irritation then this product is best for you.
I also possess the Sennheiser Momentum 2 & Jabra 85t - but I will not compare their sound quality with this one. Those products are in a different league and far more superior in bass reproduction and sound quality than the NS7.
You can use these speakers for connecting to your iPhone/iPad/Mac mini/Macbook, android tablet/phone very easily. The 360 surround sound is not available then as it’s only limited if you use this speaker with a compatible Sony Bravia TV.
When I knew it won’t offer me 360 surround spatial sound in normal Bluetooth connections and I don’t have a Bravia TV why did I spend so much money then? Well. The answer is very clear to me. I purely bought it for Sony’s design, the convenience it offers and the overall comfort of use.
It is an expensive buy and the cost does not justify the quality of sound. Many other bluetooth speakers will offer you superior bass & sound quality and are available at half the price.
NS7 is either pure indulgence or a thoughtful purchase if comfort and convenience is paramount to you. If sound quality is paramount don’t even think about the NS7 unless you have a Bravia TV to extract its full potential.
    Pros:
    Resembles a travel pillow
Sony’s ergonomic design & build quality
    Fits securely around your neck
    Acceptable audio quality
Multipoint connection - pair 2 devices at once
    Decent battery life
10 minute of charge gives you upto an hour of extra play time
Its fabric finish and silicon neckband are soft & easy to clean
    USB C charging port
    Lightweight & comfortable to use
Good & easy hands-free calling experience with optimal microphones placement
    IPX4 - Splash-proof
Wireless transmitter - Optical cable & USB cable is provided in box
Due to open ear style - you are still being aware of your surroundings.
    Cons:
    Very expensive
It’s bulky & could feel uncomfortable sometimes
    Compatibility issues
    Mediocre bass response
Sony app is required to set up
Best features only available if paired with Bravia XR TV’s
    Not fully waterproof
Upward facing speakers are highly localized - if you move your head to left or right you do lose sound.
My verdict: An unconventional niche product that you can use with any Bluetooth source, but pairing it with a Sony Bravia XR-series TV only enables the unique surround-sound experience. For me a decent audio is an acceptable trade-off for comfort. A personal speaker solution you wear around your shoulders. It fulfils my requirements exactly!

How do these speakers do when listening to normal mp3's or watching downloaded media on non Sony TV's? What's the sound quality like at lowish volumes? Is it still worth the money or are there better (or less expensive) neck speakers out there? My use case is watching movies late at night without disturbing others, listening to music (not particularly loudly), playing the occasional PC game and taking the occasional phone call. I can't deal with headphones or earbuds so neck speakers work well for me but there doesn't appear to be much choice. Thanks for any input.

If you are still looking for some advice on this, I got a set of these like 2-3 days ago and its been pretty good. I dont use them on my TV but on my PC and my Phone, on low volume I can be in bed next to my sleeping Partner and they barely hear a thing while the upfiring speakers make it loud enough for you to easily enjoy stuff at low volume. Battery Life is pretty good, they are pretty comfortable and you quickly dont even actively notice them, what does kinda suck a bit is surround sound in Games, I play Stalker and if anyones above you it gets a bit hard ( obviously ) considering the sound comes from below your ears. Sound quality overall is pretty good and the Bass isnt really rumbly as hell on your Shoulders but very clean, not much disturbance in the sound and otherwise very very clean high's.

I have one of these and really like it for watching TV or videos on my phone. Sony is full of marketing bs though if they claim to give you Atmos sound since they only use an optical cable to hook them up. Optical can only support up to 5.1 sound. They still sound amazing though!
