- Hey everyone!
Today I've got a really excited video. As you all know, I picked up a faulty Dual 1.25GhZ MDD a few months ago, and I planned on fixing it. It turned out that it was a Power Supply issue, so I ordered myself a PSU. In this video, I show plenty of good geeky computer footage of me changing the power supply! For those of you who are wondering, this MDD will be used up in my music studio.
Please stay tuned for the upgrade video!
Thanks for watching and I hope you all enjoy!

13 years later and still helpful! Thank you
You're a lifesaver!
We depend on G4 just like this one in the signshop where I work, and I just successfully replaced the power supply using this video as a guide. We're back up and running again, and I'm looking like a genius around here!
Thank you, and thank you again!
I couldn't get my G4 MDD PS out. This video didn't show how to slide it out, but I noticed the clips that retain it when the video maker already had it out and then I saw the clip shaped holders behind the removed PS, so then I knew how to slide it out, and it worked..many thanks!
Great Job, The machine is so good for music editing, I do same.
How did you know it was PSU?
wonderful tutorial
Just bought an MDD on ebay and I'm anticipating a PSU replacement. Hoping I'll get that "bong" too.
Freaking excellent bro! Just fixed my old G4 MDD.
Probably don't need to remove the hdd on the 'wall'; just remove the power cable. Other than lighting the area inside the Mac better, nice video (remember you want a darker background when you're shooting into a 'darker' area especially if your doing the exposure on auto). Appreciate your boldness!
You have to use a MDD-specific PSU. An ATX won't fit, although it can, but only if you modify the cables (but the computer won't drive ADC displays anymore as ATX can't deliver +25V) and the size will prevent you from fitting full-height PCI cards.
@Aaronage1 I could yeah... :) But this is a variable speed fan, so I think i'd need to go straight into the mobo with the 2 pin connection.
Like I say though, DO NOT just plug one straight in, as the pinouts are not the same. There are pinouts online so that you can make a conversion cable (grounds are in different places etc.)
Thanks! My MDD has stopped starting up, or will start up but will shut down if it goes into sleep mode. Or, it will boot if I unplug it from the mains and plug it back into the mains. Is that just the PRAM battery, or do I need a pwr supply...? Thanks.
You could buy a standard molex powered PC fan to replace it. If you don't have any spare molex connections it's not too much of a problem as most molex fans have a pass through. Would make your system considerably quieter too! :)
Congratulations! I'm glad I managed to help you out :)
@AloushNA Hey man! Thanks for checking out my vids :) Hope your enjoying...
Surprisingly, I get loads of my stuff from eBay. The 2 PowerMac's that I have at the moment both came from eBay, and they were both pretty cheap. You can find slower and older machines for around £60 these days, like single QuickSilvers and stuff. Fun to muck around with :)
As for PC's, they're everywhere. Just find someone chucking them out or find them in the tip and stuff:)
Hope this helps...
@ferrari24680 Thanks very much for your comment! I'm glad your enjoying the content :)
Have you tried using a different optical drive?
great quality, great video, great youtuber!
@Kingsid2 Nowp... Hard to find the stuff cheaply.
Do you have to use the specific PowerMac G4 power supply? Or can you use a generic power supply?
@bghoo8313 Yeah good plan :) iStat menus has been a faithful companion of mine for about 3 years now, and I can't go without it...
Wow, this is a great video. Thanks.
i would keep iStat Menus running, it will tell the temp of the hard drive and CPU
Just use a 20-pins power connector?
How many watts is that power supply?
@aflockofmusic2 Well in this case, it's very very lose. Any slight movement makes it fall out. Guess mines just looser :)
So an ATX power supply will work but won't fit?
Thanks
Wicked, thanks
thanks you rock!
You seem to make a lot of money...
Why did you buy an entire new PSU? I bet it was just a couple of bad capacitors for 50p.
thanks man
@WinnerWill Who?...
Yeah will do haha
