  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What do you know about crowd behaviour? Do you believe in the mindless crowd? Dr John Drury presents the crowd in a different light, highlighting how identity can shape the behaviour of a crowd. Dispelling the myth of the mindless crowd; giving it life.
Dr. John Drury is a senior lecturer in Social Psychology at Sussex University. His research focuses on collective action, resilience, and reactions to situations of crowding, among others. His work has been used by the Emergency Services and the Department of Health.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Good lecture. I always learn best when content is delivered through a weathered tube amp from the 50s.

I would think the matter of conformity is a big one with crowds, and the madness is not just specifically to individual actions... but the "thoughts" of the crowd.
A majority can sustain beliefs based solely on the fact it is a majority, in a crowd you can see "group think" ... this is seen traspiring as blind obedience, fear of opposing the crowd. Haven't there have been tests showing people agreeing with things they knew to be false because they were surrounded by people(actors) who were all saying the incorrect?
It seems the crowd is good or bad depending on whether you support the result they get or their "cause".
Not sure if this talk actually tackled the core issues of group think that is concerning in a crowd ... the examples show cases where we could agree with the crowd and people say gave each other strength. THe issue with crowds is not addressed by showing these examples really, doesn;t deal with the effect of peer pressure, lack of critical thinking, individuality and diverse thinking , ideas being supported merely or mostly by the fact the crowd hold this view.
The emotionality of a crowd can be good or bad sure, but when people are in an emotional state their thinking can be less clear, in a crowd this can get set into a feedback loop.
Can blindly obeying orders be good? sure, in certain circumstances... do these circumstances debunk the idea that blindly following orders leads to bad consequences.. no, not in the broader sense. Can a crowd achieve good, yes, can crowds be a threat to power yes... can crowds be used to maintain power structures? is group thinking easier or harder for authoritarian bodies to manage relative to people thinking for themselves?
The problem with crowds is essentially the group think in my view and I don't think this presentation addressed that. Nor does showing positive aspects to the crowd reverse my concern regarding this.. and I would say most people are aware of the importance and power people getting together can wield , so stating that really seems like telling people something they already know and accept and expecting that to cause a significant shift in view.

The crowd he talks about at 11:00 is fine. It was just targeting police, not civilians. Targeting and attacking police is not violence. That is the politically correct thing to do. Please...
